Many years before the '71 set was officially released I asked Tony at a gig if he could tape the one-sided promo Hogs vinyl for me and gave him a cassette at a Putney circa 1980 and you know, he actually took the trouble to record it for me and post it back with a nice letter. What a really lovely chap. One of my very favourite guitar players ever. All Hogs albums are different and they all have their moments. Apparently they played Cherry Red on Top Of The Pops - imagine that!
I just left messages on Swervedriver videos saying they were the Groundhogs of 1991 - have other Hogs fans heard them - check out 'Son of Mustang Ford'
I am big Groundhogs fan, but I have to agree with WELLBRAN. I went along to see Groundhogs with my old man (who seen 'em back in the day) in Glasgow, after listening to the studio albums for years. Tony truly is past his sell-by date, he couldn't play or sing in time, it was quite disheartening. I'll stick with the studio albums for now
I watched Groundhogs live in there prime and they were FANTASTIC! but this is no good they have had it, give it up now, its a shame but its the truth, yes SPLIT was a great album and one of the best Albums ever, but now?....sorry boys give up now.
@plopnod - You're so right. I was in a three piece new wave/punk band in the late 70s and on the first album I ripped off (without realising) the chord sequence to Status people. I was in the Marquee bar just after doing a support gig and our roadie was there - 'Heard the album - great stuff - very like the Groundhogs in places!' I was chuffed!
Split 2 is one of the pieces I promised myself I would master when I got my first guitar.
No chance..too fast and complex for me.
(I also thought I could play a few Hendrix licks just by buying a Cry Baby Wah Wah.)
Young, naive and optimistic.
Saw Groundhogs in Glasgow early 70's - amazing - I remember we were arguing about the logo on the drum kit, whether it was a rocket or a polar bear!? Weird!
great to hear some groundhogs. heres a peice of trivia for all you fans. i dep`ed for some young lads in hatley st george cambridgeshire, cant remember if it was late 80`s or early 90`s we supported the groundhogs. mainly played jimi hendrix covers. needless to say mcphee and co blew us away lol!!!!! they were awsome . true pros!!!!!
I remember in 1970's being pinned to the back of the dance hall by Tony's fender! also nice to see Tony still has a pair of bumper boots...why did he wear them?
remember Groundhogs at The Octagon Theatre, Bolton around 69/70...also Magees in Bolton...if you're reading this Tony, remember Pete taking you round Bolton's watering holes before the gig LOL
I have a live album of the Groundhogs. Found it in a cutout bin at Hastings one night for $1.99, had to check it out. The name caught my attention. Haven't seen any other albums by this band, only this one.
Brilliant post, was at the gig (got up to play guitar for 'Soldier') and it was feckin' great! One of my fave versions of 'Cherry Red' on the audio track too!
Some hard rock band in America tried to cover this song by passing it off as their own. I couldn't believe it. It was fuckin' horrible! God bless The Groundhogs.
what a tune makes my hair stand on end.

@ATOMICROOSTER85
hi.
How recently did you seee them; did you know TS has very recently got over a stroke that left him unable to talk or play for a few months?
Also he has made a number of Solo albums as well as albums with various other (mainly old time) bluesmen.
Foolish Pride is a good one.
Never met the bloke; just a massive fan (still :-)

I didn't know about that, maybe I seen them at the wrong time. Hope Tony has made/makes a full recovery. I'll check out that solo album. Cheers

@jutheboy I think it was "split" or it could have been "thank Christ for the bomb". Both excellent albums.
