The inspirational musical revolutionary of our time. Curtis, sir your contributions to Black culture is enumerable and immeasurable and your are surely missed Black Father Lion..."right on!"
Love this song...Always Loved this song...I dont know anymore when i didnot love this song....I mean...I grew up with this SONGGGGGG (girl from the 60) SMILE
I was there 14 years old though but I still remember this amazing perfomence. My father took me to Parkpop every year and i am still glad he did. Saw some amazing artist thanks to him!
I think they are several reasons why Curtis Mayfield decided to use synths for the lead line in this tune (1) the cost of hiring a horn section is much more expensive than a keyboardist who could play the same parts (2) technology in the eighties affected the way musicians looked at synthesized instruments (3) people actually liked synths back then. I agree that the horns would've have been better sonically, but Curtis' message and Henry Gibson's playing carried the spirit of collectivism anyway
Moments after Mayfield took the temporary stage at Wingate Field in Brooklyn NY, E. Flatbush, an unexpected gust of wind toppled the heavy lighting scaffold overhead. It was "like a mini-tornado," recalled the state legislator who organized the concert series. 6 people including 3 crew members & a 12-YR-old girl were treated for injuries, but it was Mayfield who took the brunt of the collapse. The blow broke his neck, paralyzing him from the neck down.
To this day one of my all time favorites.Takes me back to a time of really well written music. What a timeless masterpiece Curtis left us. Can't listen to this song and not feel good.Vaya
pre-workout drink? THIS is my pre-workout drink. Heck, I listen to this song on repeat doing my workout. This is motivating stuff right here people. Move on UP people! do your thing. and utmost respect to Mr. West and to Curtis Mayfield for creating this song, even though more props to Kanye because if it wasn't for him I wouldn't find this song. Move on up beautiful people!!
if the synth worked for Curtis, who are we to argue? We are not worthy. His body of work stands alone in the pantheon of soul/r n' b. There was no other like him, nor will there ever be.
thx 4 the upload, i've been looking (in vain up to now) for a YT vid of a less known, real smooth track of him, "Soul Music" if s/o feels like uploading it, pls feel free...
Yeah think you're right. He's not smiling at all and nobody in the crowd is. You cant see curtis and the band have absolutely no fun, especially not during the drumsolo. They look very bored. Yeah, its really a hell of a shit crowd....
In the early seventies the K-tel recordlabel produced a compilationalbum called "black music", with all the leading black musicians of the day, such as sly stone, james brown, jimi hendrix, timi tomas, isley bros. and among others this artist with "move on up".
Even among such talent this record stuck out, and still does.
Most of the people watching did not have a cleu what they where watching, and that this would be a uniqeu onetime thing, for not long after this concert curtiss had a bad accident on a stage in germany.
There only excuse is that most of them wheren't even born when the record got out, in the late sixties.
Yes i was there on that day, listening to a song that i first heard about seventien years before this date, and yes i did appreciate the gig, so eat your hart out, former east-block commie's !
@bassmanUSSR I've noticed that people in holland(on many concerts here on tube) do not understand good music! in the year of this peformance I was living in Yugoslavia/east block. if you brought him here people would go mad because too big choice can made you a spoiled prick.
This is conscious music with deep meaningful messages. LOve Curtis....wish I could have caught him in concert when He was alive.....Man this sounds good and no....they don't make music like this anymore. Move on UP!!!
Hey indigorenk what's so special about that festival. What artists go to them and how many people go to those events that you call special and when does it occur. You got me interested!!
Great song! with a good message. The conga percussion guy is really good to. I liked how Curtis used percussion in his songs. I think Curtis may have still be alive today if the stage wouldn't have fell on top of him.
How magnificent is this?.....Curtis was so PRO-Black and he loves his people....ALL of his music and creations spoke to BLACK people and OUR emotions and struggles WITHIN!!!.....Curtis you were and ARE one of the best creators of sound!!!!
Curtis has spoke on several occassions regarding the PASSION behind his beutiful music....Music is INTERNATIONAL and so was Curtis. Claudine soundtrack (the struggle of the urban family), Sparkle soudtrack(The challenge of blacks, stardom and drugs)...His earlier recordings, regarding blacks and their spiritual connection...JUST LISTEN!!!

Moments after Mayfield took the temporary stage at Wingate Field in Brooklyn NY, E. Flatbush, an unexpected gust of wind toppled the heavy lighting scaffold overhead.
