  • Who is the african drummer? The solo was sick.

  • Curtis Mayfield was a giant.

  • Absolut formidable:-)magnifique

  • 初めて真剣に聞いた、見たカーティス。

    カッコイイ!その一言。

    今まで聞かなかった38年返してくれ!

  • I usually like 80s music and the synth, but I don't think it fits well with this song.

  • I think they are several reasons why Curtis Mayfield decided to use synths for the lead line in this tune (1) the cost of hiring a horn section is much more expensive than a keyboardist who could play the same parts (2) technology in the eighties affected the way musicians looked at synthesized instruments (3) people actually liked synths back then. I agree that the horns would've have been better sonically, but Curtis' message and Henry Gibson's playing carried the spirit of collectivism anyway

  • @MRSweetlakecity, May I correct you;

Moments after Mayfield took the temporary stage at Wingate Field in Brooklyn NY, E. Flatbush, an unexpected gust of wind toppled the heavy lighting scaffold overhead. It was "like a mini-tornado," recalled the state legislator who organized the concert series. 6 people including 3 crew members & a 12-YR-old girl were treated for injuries, but it was Mayfield who took the brunt of the collapse. The blow broke his neck, paralyzing him from the neck down.

    Peace

  • Beautiful!

  • i wish i could find a live version with ma' fuckin horns. not with this 80s synth nonsense

  • To this day one of my all time favorites.Takes me back to a time of really well written music. What a timeless masterpiece Curtis left us. Can't listen to this song and not feel good.Vaya

  • I was lucky enough to see Curtis back in the 80's. Wonderful Memories...

  • too bad about the cheesy eighties keyboard sound. kills it for me.

  • also,it would have worked better with the horn section. keeping that soul vibe. but its awesome anyways.

  • pre-workout drink? THIS is my pre-workout drink. Heck, I listen to this song on repeat doing my workout. This is motivating stuff right here people. Move on UP people! do your thing. and utmost respect to Mr. West and to Curtis Mayfield for creating this song, even though more props to Kanye because if it wasn't for him I wouldn't find this song. Move on up beautiful people!!

  • how stiff was the them dam fools. they need to be hit with a big soul stick

  • cool

  • Thanks Curtis, this song made my day....

  • Incredible

  • if the synth worked for Curtis, who are we to argue? We are not worthy. His body of work stands alone in the pantheon of soul/r n' b. There was no other like him, nor will there ever be.

  • If music be the food of love, play on,

Give me excess of it; that surfeiting,

The appetite may sicken, and so die.

    Duke Orsino

  • such a great song, but i think having the actual horns there gives it so much more kick and feeling

  • Here is a brother that tragically left us all together too soon - the Genius of Curtom Records.

  • Just exquisite!! Best song ever.

  • the guy at 7 10 is difenenitely wasted im a bit wasted myself at the moments

  • He was incredible, a genius.

    This song is amazing

And that is one hell of a shit crowd, considering the act. I don't think they fully appreciated what they had in front of them

  • how dare you call the audience a shit crowd oh sorry mabye you thought they were all on shit fair enough

  • Muhahaha.

Yeah think you're right. He's not smiling at all and nobody in the crowd is. You cant see curtis and the band have absolutely no fun, especially not during the drumsolo. They look very bored. Yeah, its really a hell of a shit crowd....

  • @bassmanUSSR yeah man it is in the netherlands, so maybe it looks like they dont give a fuck.

but there al stoned or high or whatever, and enjoying from the inside :D

  • @bassmanUSSR You're totally right, there just a bunch off white youngsters, interested in Punk & Ska, don't knowing soul.

  • @sehnheiser

In the early seventies the K-tel recordlabel produced a compilationalbum called "black music", with all the leading black musicians of the day, such as sly stone, james brown, jimi hendrix, timi tomas, isley bros. and among others this artist with "move on up".

Even among such talent this record stuck out, and still does.

  • @MrSweetlakecity

Most of the people watching did not have a cleu what they where watching, and that this would be a uniqeu onetime thing, for not long after this concert curtiss had a bad accident on a stage in germany.

There only excuse is that most of them wheren't even born when the record got out, in the late sixties.

  • @MrSweetlakecity

Yes i was there on that day, listening to a song that i first heard about seventien years before this date, and yes i did appreciate the gig, so eat your hart out, former east-block commie's !

  • @bassmanUSSR I've noticed that people in holland(on many concerts here on tube) do not understand good music! in the year of this peformance I was living in Yugoslavia/east block. if you brought him here people would go mad because too big choice can made you a spoiled prick.

  • @bassmanUSSR

That's the beauty of free festivals! Everybody is invited and welcome to experience new things....

Imagine how wise those people are now, after seeing this show...

  • Good music... Is that Kanye West at 3:33?

  • lol ironically one of kanyes big hits was sampled from this song

  • hehe...

he was 10 years old in 1987 :)

  • This is conscious music with deep meaningful messages. LOve Curtis....wish I could have caught him in concert when He was alive.....Man this sounds good and no....they don't make music like this anymore. Move on UP!!!

  • Thank you Love man for your interest.

It is a great festival every year, and I found a site about it in english.

    That tells all about it.

Better than I could do (in my english) :)

I send it to you right away.

  • I love this!!!!!! Music like this doesnt exist anymore....God I miss it!!!!!!!!!

  • great boots also geweldig move up

  • Park pop is a really good festifal every year:)

    Very special.

  • Hey indigorenk what's so special about that festival. What artists go to them and how many people go to those events that you call special and when does it occur. You got me interested!!

  • Great song! with a good message. The conga percussion guy is really good to. I liked how Curtis used percussion in his songs. I think Curtis may have still be alive today if the stage wouldn't have fell on top of him.

  • His bass player is amazing!

  • one of my favourite songs ever

  • How magnificent is this?.....Curtis was so PRO-Black and he loves his people....ALL of his music and creations spoke to BLACK people and OUR emotions and struggles WITHIN!!!.....Curtis you were and ARE one of the best creators of sound!!!!

  • He believed in equality, and, was not Pro-Black

I no way did he express himself as to say blacks were superior.

  • Curtis has spoke on several occassions regarding the PASSION behind his beutiful music....Music is INTERNATIONAL and so was Curtis. HIS INSPIRATION CAME FROM THE EMOTIONS OF BLACKS...This is not a RACE thing whoever you are, dont put negative spins on things when its not called for......!!!! Claudine soundtrack (the struggle of the urban family), Sparkle soudtrack(The challenge of blacks, stardom and drugs)...His earlier recordings, regarding blacks and their spiritual connection...JUST LISTEN!!!

  • CURTIS 4 EVER

  • Curtis Mayfield is the man-

  • omg - 7:10

  • blaxploitation.

    one and only.

  • merci pour la video

jesus level 0 Curtis level 1

  • I learn him reading George Pelecanos book "Drama city"

  • yea, that synth and the drums destroy the soul of the tune.....damn 80s, that decade really sucked.

    Curtis was the best

  • There will NEVER be anyone as great as him EVER again.

  • God that synth & electric piano sucks the soul right out of the music.

  • Agreed. Completely spoils something otherwise brilliant.

  • wow curtis' voice is really killin. hasnt changed a day.

  • that conga solo!!!!! aahmy god master henry gibson is the percussion master man!!

  • whos that song paul wellers or curtis?

  • MOVE ON UP!!!!!!

in the Dutch Mountains and ofcourse...WORLDWIDE!!!!!!!!!!!

  • btw I just saw a Hendrix docu where Jimi Hendrix' manager said Jimi tried to play guitar like Curtis fwiw

  • the imcomparable Curtis Mayfield

  • So sad he had that accident not long after this. :-(

  • Praise God for His Goodness and His Wonderful Works to the Children of Men!

  • the best curtis

  • I luv Curtis Mayfield, but this song needs a real brass section... The synthesized-keyboard brass just can't deliver like a horn player could.

Still one of the greatest song of all time!

R.i.p. Curtis, Marvin, Luther & Michael......

  • fantastic

  • Herrliche Musik direkt aus der Seele mit Gefühl & Groove...lovin*it

  • THANX FOR DROPPING BY BACKTHEN!!

  • amazing performance

  • Too bad I was not born in 1987...,

'Cause if I was, I really would be there on Parkpop, The Hague

  • Lol if you were born in 1987, you would be 0 yrs old at this concert :S But i agree i wish i could have been there too!

  • Beautiful!....Allah Hu Akbar

KerimMod4Ever Has Thus Spoken The Truth!

  • do it

  • Wow , whata voice -range ! He sound's soo positive . Look at the percussionist - he seems sappy to play with him.

    Thank you

  • his voice gives me goosebumps, straight up.

  • God bless the great Curtis Mayfield!!

  • i've always thought that kanye west made this beat. that's just because crap is being played on the radio and not classic songs like this!

  • Dont forget, a whole lot of hiphop *music* is being sampled from older stuff :), especially the more known songs. Imo this is due to the fact that said samples are indeed the things that made the songs into what they are today! :D

  • That's one way to get the kids to listen to something good!

  • you mean the crap that is bein played today?

  • Curtis is untouchable. A class above the rest.

  • Curtis, Smokey, Dylan, Brian Wilson,John Phillips are among the greatest american poets that ever lived!!

  • Fuck it would've been amazing to have been there...

  • one of the most beautiful singer of all time, a great poet every songs of Curtis are deep, beautiful,

  • curtis always gives me goosebumps

  • Classic!

  • holy hell yeh!

  • Love the video and the artist as well as the music...or song. Just wondered who was the congo player...and did he continue to play with this band...or did he fade away due to drug use?

  • i recon the drugs got him,,, But fck can he BONGO..check the dude in the crowd at 7:10 he is about 2 yrs in front on the drugs thing

  • classic

  • awesome video! thanks for putting it up.

  • my dad thinks this a great. me 2.

  • ohhh this song was sampled in bran van 3000's song, i forget which one, ooh maybe it was 'astounded'

  • That's right...also Kanye West sampled this song in "Touch The Sky"

  • Fuck Kanye West!

  • yea i noticed that afew yrs ago and i was suprised, Kanye has guts to try and do that, he failed

  • curtis 4 ever

  • If you has ever seen Curtis live you would know he never had a horn section.

  • Comment removed

  • trumpets and trombones where are they in all these live performances...squeeky keyboards just are'nt the same are they. Still enjoyed it though just have to hum the brass to myself I guess..loud!

  • Comment removed

  • how his this guys message spam!?!?!?!?!?!?!!!!

  • This is as funky as hell...I only have one problem with this version. Where are the real horns? I admit, I'm kind of biased though...seeing as how I'm a horn player. I can stand it when there's a horn section synth. In my opinion, that is one of ht cheesiest sounds in the world.

STILL. THIS IS AS FUNKY AS HELL.

  • damn 25yrs older than me is that song but i still love it, its like the Radio just forgets about guys like Curtis

i wish my momma had me before 95 coz i put up with soulja boy shit EVERYDAY

i mean like late 70's so i could be around in the NWA,Kool G Rap,Gangstarr,Temptations,New Edition days........when people actually new them

but that would be fucked coz my momma would be my age

  • And also you'd get stabbed severeal times for saying 'momma' lol

  • hehe LMAO!

  • THE MAN THE SONG
