He's absolutely right. There are dozens and dozens of American military installations in Germany for example and I want to say : why? Germany is now a great, peaceful democracy and has been for 70 years, the Cold war is over, Germany is surrounded by other peaceful allied democracies and if war breaks out between Europe and some other region, many European countries have a very good enough army to defend itself, or to engage in peacekeeping in ex-Yugoslavia or whatnot.

He's absolutely right. There are dozens and dozens of American military installations in Germany for example and I want to say : why? Germany is now a great, peaceful democracy and has been for 70 years, the Cold war is over, Germany is surrounded by other peaceful allied democracies and if war breaks out between Europe and some other region, many European countries have a very good enough army to defend itself, or to engage in peacekeeping in ex-Yugoslavia or whatnot.
