Loss of apex predators is a bad thing. In some areas of Connecticut, whitetail deer have become urban scavengers for at least part of their food supply. We have no wolves, and expanding human hunting much further is probably politically impossible. Something needs to be done.

Its a shame and i've signed petitions right and left to stop the practice of sharkfinning--some fishermen pull up the shark, cut off the fins, and drop it back overboard to become lunch for other fish in the sea, totally vulnerable. gah!

@BonScottAC They are slow to breed, so you would have to have the sharks for a long enough time to do that, and whilst you do that with the sharks, all the species that they hunt on will have a 'baby boom' and those would overkill the species they hunt, and because so on so on ^^
@BonScottAC You can't breed an apex predator, they need too much space and food. Any sort of farm operation would end with the sharks killing each other over mates or food because they don't have a large enough range.

@siesss first, i was merely clarifying to phill that japan doesn't really eat sharks. i wasn't comparing the chinese or the japanese, so you can stop defending them in that context.
2nd, i personally think eating dolphins is much more of a crime, since they are intelligent species with limited numbers, compared to sharks. even if they eat all of the dolphin, does that justify it in your eyes? you do know those dolphins bleed to death when they're captured, right?

I'm not saying shark finning is worse then dolphins slaughter. It's both just as bad. although dolphins stress more i think! I did see the blood, and it's fucking cruel. but did you see the 95 kilometer longlines with 15.000 baited hooks, catching anything! from seaturtles, sealions to seabirds sharks and dolphins? sharks are quite often dead(as for the other animals) the others will be definned and often thrown back still alive. they suffocate cz they can't swim anymore..

@siesss just so you know, i like sharks too. but dolphins should at least be treated in the same degree as how you think about sharks.
i have a soft spot for dolphins when i knew that they deliberately save humans from sharks. i mean, i love them even more at that point.
but put that aside, dolphins are predators too. for balancing the sea lion population, you have killer whales. mammals in the seas are threatened too.

true, but dolphin/whale populations are recovering. Humpbacks, blues(little bit) greys, sperm whales. There population is rising again. Even minke whales, although they still have a catching quote for about a thousand... They (fortunately)don't kill that many ceteceans anymore to form a big threat for them, although it's still cruel and inhumane. Sharks are still hunted by the millions. and nobody does anything about it.. We fought for dolphins, now we should fight for sharks.

I know that there's still a lot of whaling going on, but it's not a really big threath for most species. The ecosystems are a lot more under threath because of shark finnig rather then whale hunting. It should stop. both of them... but that's almost impossible... the ocean is so big, and people only care about economy and money. they don't want to spend 20.000 dollars to save whales if they can also buy an expensive car with that money...

Btw, Some sharks take up to 25 years to reach sexual maturity... Sharks are 10 times more at risk than dolphins at the moment. Dolphins are protected, and there isn't a really large illegal market for it.. sharks are the epax predators of the oceans. they shaped the oceans the last 400 million years. new species of fish and other animals appeared cz of them.. And we are almost wiping them out... Ever heared of sharkwater;)?

I'm scared of the water thanks to sharks (watched jaws about 2000 times too many as a kid, still love it, though), but i have a healthy respect for them and find them fascinating. Its a shame and i've signed petitions right and left to stop the practice of sharkfinning--some fishermen pull up the shark, cut off the fins, and drop it back overboard to become lunch for other fish in the sea, totally vulnerable. gah!

@BonScottAC You can't breed an apex predator, they need too much space and food. Any sort of farm operation would end with the sharks killing each other over mates or food because they don't have a large enough range.

@BonScottAC I think what they're doing is already science. You do have a point but it is proven that species live longer and are much healthier if they learn to survive in their own habitat. If they do in-vitro, it will be extremely expensive and it does not guarantee the increase of the species' population.
