  • Basshunter brought me here :-)

  • Excellent tutorial - simple and to the point. That's what I love about your videos. Thanks !

  • Plain and simple tutorial... just the way I wanted :-)

    Thank you!

  • I use that program in windows and use geekshed irc

  • Good memories using IRC :)

  • Thank you very much for this video TWL, it was very well done!

PS Great idea using a smooth and relaxing music in the background!

  • I have windows 7 can. I get the xchat??

  • @acesnspades you should be able to. just google "xchat windows"

  • :-)

  • wait, some people dont know how to install software on their computers?

  • @iugey you'd be surprised.

  • First time I tried command-line-based irc clientst but those were too complicated, this video is clear and easy. Thanks for it. ;)

  • Sorry, I don't understand the advantages of this over every other type of IM client.

  • @naryanr traditionally IM clients provide 1-to-1 communication. This allows for that, as well as group communication. Of course if you prefer IM, that's cool. I just like IRC, and I've been using it for at least 12 years now.

  • @thisweekinlinux Oh right, I use the two most popular, MSN and Skype, and Skype especially does groups beautifully.

  • @MrRyanian I was just messing with you, man. It is perfectly fine to say that it "just works." Usually, Mac users say "it just works." Linux users say that Ubuntu users (I use Ubuntu, too) are noobs. Yeah, those "hardcore" Linux users say that Ubuntu is too noob-friendly.

"How would a Linux user describe Ubuntu or Linux in general?" I don't know. I personally describe that Linux is free (and epic)! Note that free is for freedom, not the price.

  • @MrRyanian Good to know that you use Ubuntu, my friend, but "just works" is not one of the labels that Linux users use :P. You know what I mean?

  • random off video question....but what do u think of Ylmf OS?

  • @TeruMikami2345 I haven't tried it yet. I'll have to look it up

  • @thisweekinlinux its based off of Ubuntu, its designed like WInXP, but its better cuz its ubuntu!

  • @TeruMikami2345 so it's just Ubuntu with an XP theme? nothing extra?

  • @thisweekinlinux Yes, there is extra things, it is chinese, with extra things, that do not come with regular ubuntu in the install, it still has software center, but most of the programs are not in there. and u must look thru the web to find downloads like windows. also, the theme is not exact, there are some cool features in the design, test it in virtalbox, get the Ylmf OS 3.0 iso

  • @TeruMikami2345 I'll have to do that. thanks.

  • @thisweekinlinux No Prob, its my Main OS, aince regular ubuntu wont load on my netbook...its weird

  • @MrRyanian a good point. I've been Linux-only for a few years now, and haven't looked back. :)

  • @MrRyanian officially, it's "oo-boon-too". They used to have a pronunciation guide on their website.

At the end of the day though, say it how you're comfortable. :)

  • Jordan would Tinny chat be considered a type of I.R.C? Also, There's something called Arduino which is open source hard ware that may be of interest to you and your fellow Linux Fans.

  • @Freespire44 I don't believe tinychat uses IRC, no, but it's a similar concept, like someone else mentioned AIM and MSN chat rooms. IRC a specific type of server.

I've heard of Arduino, I've just not had much interest in hardware hacking in the past. Thanks for thinking of me though.

  • It's a long time since I've been on irc. Iirc '/list' will give a long list of all channels available. That can be handy if you don't know the name of a channel that might be of interest. I can't remember now, but I think it was possible to look for channel subject names with wildcards too.

  • @technoboi0 yeah, on Freenode that's a LONG list

  • bitlbee is a nice thing, IM (like msn) in irc. irssi is a wonderful irc-client btw.

  • @stormmicke irssi is amazing, yes. It's what I use for the most part.

  • does this get mirc servers & xdcc packs

  • @Lynnc83 it should be able to connect to the same sorts of servers, and receive xdcc. it's been probably 10 years since I've touched mIRC, so it's hard to remember all the things it can do.

  • that looks like mirc lol

  • Empathy, the default IM client in Ubuntu, is already an IRC client. Just go to Edit > Accounts > Add > Protocol: IRC.

  • Comment removed

  • So whats the difference between an IRC chat room and something like a AIM chat room or a MSN chat room

  • @Nekryu I've never been in the AIM or MSN chat rooms. IRC rooms are hosted on a server, and can be made permanent and guarded by services on the server.

  • ...yay,,

  • The video turned out great. Worth all the work.

  • have they added video capabilities to irc chat room by now?

it's been long since I last tried to enter any irc room.

  • @gguybr nah, I don't believe they have, but there are quite a few video streaming services that work around IRC. Ustream specifically uses IRC for the chat rooms on their streams

  • I only found out about IRC after coming to linux a couple years ago, but before that if I ever heard the name mentioned I assumed it was some very old school type of messaging system. And maybe it is, but I didnt realise how still useful and popular it still is

  • @ElderSnake90 not sure how popular it is, but I constantly use it, and i know other communities (Jupiter Broadcasting, Lockergnome) use it frequently.

  • nice video :). why don't you have op on your channel? i use +q for myself, +a for site admins, +o for site moderators, +h for trusted people in the channel and i give voice to all the regulars.

i'm not sure how freenode works, but how do you kick a rowdy person if you only have voice?

  • @TheDarkPaladin I don't see a reason to stay opped all the time. we use the +v to show who the admins are, and the bot can kick people on op request (if they say naughty words, it does it automatically).

Chanserv also allows us to op ourselves if we need to.

  • WHO NEEDS TWITTER N FACEBOOK ? I got IRC :)

  • @axel1973w The surveilance state doesnt like IRC. Too hard to monitor and you can hide behind a proxy or VPN. Facebook and twitter is by far prefered.

  • I remember trading files on fserves WAY back in the day. ahhhh memories

  • i remember using IRC about 10 years ago.

how can i make my IP invisible in the chat?

  • @MattDurden on freenode, you'll need to join the #freenode channel and request an "unaffiliated" hostmask.

  • @thisweekinlinux alright, i`ll try it later at home, thanks!

  • @MattDurden , in fact.. you just CANT hide your IP address realy. thinking of anonymity using internet standard apps is just a Illusion.

  • @axel1973w i meant hiding it when a person hovers over your nick in the chat, know what i mean?

  • @axel1973w No you can. A trusted VPN with a no logging policy or even TOR can hide your IP. Or just use a proxy, whoever is trying to find youre real ip adress will have to go to the place you connect to to find some log of who you are. Well i guess theres echelon and the NSA or jesus can figure out who you are with some sci fi technology but its fairly irrelevant unless youre planning to blow up an airplane. I doubt it though.

  • what i typically use is just add, then type in all the server and channel details, done

  • Many people will benefit from this, so many people don't know what IRC is. :)

  • Thanks so much for the Wikipedia link. Otherwise I'd never have found the article! Maybe you can do a video on typing in 3 characters into a search box?

  • @rtsownage totally constructive there. Have a great day.

  • @rtsownage It is people like you who do not contribute anything positive to humanity. You sir, are a pathetic, uncouth, and uneducated sack of human waste. You must lead a very sad life if you think it is even the least bit funny to flame on someone's channel.

  • @riffzombie I do hope you feel better now.

  • I beleive a lot of hosts do not like Internet Relay Chat, it burns up their server use too much.

  • @Films4You I haven't tried hosting my own IRC server before, so I don't know what sort of traffic they'd get.

  • i use pidgin to connect to IRC.... i think is better and looks nice

  • Weechat is okay too

  • Irssi ftw

  • Thank you very much Jordan, I have always wanted someone to explain IRC chat, and you did it very well. Can I ask how secure IRC is. I.e. can it act as a portal for people to access your computer? If so, what can be done to be more secure.

  • i should've been on irc when u were doing this....

  • How do i create a irc channel?

  • @HLAH08 You just join to it, and in the same instant channel is greated. Debending on server you can register it by different ways.

  • linux mint 10 comes with xhcat :)

  • I do like using mirc, and I know that Ubuntu or mint uses xchat. looks like you got this vid finished ad working (just got done seeing the twil talks about screencasting not working again)

  • awesome you got it working Jordan!

  • you could use MSN like normal people do.

    Just saying

  • @localdiskC Nobody I know still uses MSN... GMail has taken over that space. But IRC is very different from IM. It is mostly an open chat and a great way to get in touch with people who have similar interests.

  • @localdiskC Well, msn is more like a one and one chat with people you know rather than a "public chat". I mean IRC is really useful if you need help quickly or discuss with many people who have commun interests like here for example Linux. Good Tutorial ^^.

  • Fedora = sudo yum install xchat

Arch = sudo pacman -S xchat

debian = sudo apt-get install xchat

    and so on...

  • @egadw Thanks for that

  • @thisweekinlinux I haven't seen one distro wherein it isn't called xchat.. :P

  • Thanks for the info!

  • I use IRC all the time :P

  • hi! thanks for this video on IRC..learned a lot! could anyone tell me how to make videos such as these? (like how to capture screen and audio and convert them into flv..)?

  • @rgh1986aka199 I used Kazam Screencaster to make this one. If you google for "Kazam Screencaster" you'll find the PPA for Ubuntu pretty easily. It puts out a .mkv file that you can either convert or use within a video editor.

  • @thisweekinlinux thank you so much! really appreciate it!

  • Thanks a lot! I seriously hated when people would tell me to go to their IRC, since no one ever explained what it was

  • @Synicade I figured there would be at least a few people out there who were unfamiliar. I probably should have shown the client I've got embedded into my website (click the Chat link to get to it), but oh well.

  • Oh And I never posted a popular person's comment so early before, go me and subs!

  • @74ryanwolf I'm popular? lol. :P

  • @thisweekinlinux lol yeah! you'r partner and has tons of fans (me being one)

  • @74ryanwolf well I appreciate that. Thanks, man. :)

  • Wow I was just watching a video about XChat lol

  • Great vid, keep them coming. Maybe a usenet video, if you are in the retro mood. :)

  • @linuxsport You know, Usenet is a service I've never gotten into. :/
