Altitude is your friend... But this certainly doesn't diminish the pilot's skill. Nor his keeping composure in a rather heavy "glider". He was always aware (removing the GPS) and ahead of the situation.

good luck for the pilot and passengers that the propeller separated cleanly. Losing one blade usually means destroying the engine mounts and makes things a bit more difficult to have a safe landing. Not to dismiss their accomplishment, but the Cessna 172 has an fairly good glide ratio and power-off (idle) landings are taught before a student pilot even leaves the pattern. Rule of thumb is about 9 miles of glide per 1 nm of altitude at max glide speed (~60-65 KIAS). Not quite as good as some commercial airliners, but if you can see a landing area off at a 45 degree angle below horizontal or closer you should be able to make it.

I am not kidding I have seen aircraft flying in mexico that had the bottom skin of the stabilizor stuck to the top skin on the elevator behind the front spar and no one gave a crap about it. not good. labor is cheap though :S

Se puede ver la Concentracion del Capitan! Calma , el copiloto se ve nervioso cuando quita el GPS del Tablero, y le da sugerencias de donde poner el aparato ,
