  • Have yet to find a better version. From Terfel to Hampson to Mattei none are as good as Wächter at this aria

  • Really enjoyable! Thanks for sharing!

  • Wächter is doing are very very good job here.

  • siepi is the best.

  • @Vincenzo2010an

Concerning basses he was one of the best Don's, but I prefer Ramey and Ghiaurov.

    All the best

  • yes they are fantasic too.

  • That's a good point ;) I know the italian language only by hearing opera.

In my opinion you need to difer which sort of Don Giovanni you mean:

As a baritone he's (in my opinion) definitely the best I've ever heard.

As a bass-baritone I personally adore Samuel Ramey over Cesare Siepi, Nicola Ghiaurov and Ferruccio Furlanetto (of course all of them were great).

Nevertheless let's be happy that there were so many great Dons.

    All the best

  • Yes it's from 1961, you can get more information about the recording at the side.

In my opinion this mistake (I don't hear it ?!) isn't worth mentioning.

    All the best

  • ..this singer is well worth listening to at any time.....if he is not a favorite, he brings life to the music.....

  • a great Don Giovanni

  • I've uploaded the first part of Lehar's Lustige Witwe (Merry Widow), but it's only funny if you understand german.

There are two very good recordings of Strauß's Fledermaus with Wächter, on time from Munich witch Carlos Kleiber and one time from Vienna with Karl Böhm.

  • And by the way, I too would love to hear more of this fabulous voice. The two Mozart operas are all I have of him - and they are a 'must have' for any Mozart lover who has,'t yet got them.

  • This brings back glorious memories . I saw Wachter in the '50s doing concert performances at the Royal Festival Hall, London, of both 'Don Giovanni' and 'Le Nozze di Figaro', conducted by Giulini just before those famous recordings were made. A stunning performance each time - and a Don Giovanni of manic energy, a version to rival Cesare Siepi's even though they are different.

  • @TITO13ITALIAN I LOVE Siepi S' don, but i must say, that during this aria he is not so full of energy, Beautiful version.

  • Bravo, Herr Wächter!

  • Das ist die beste Champagner-Arie, die ich je gehört habe. Gottseidank besitze ich die Aufnahme!

The best Fin ch'han dal vino I've ever heard.

I have it on an old Disc record, love it.

  • Schön, dass andere Leute auch meiner Meinung sind :)

    Thx 4 comment!

  • Bravo Eberhard!!!!

  • In his prime Waechter beat them all - even the great Fischer-Diskau. His timbre was light and golden, he was a great singer-actor, and an incredibly handsome man.

These in my opinion are his best recorded moments: The Giulini Figaro and Don Juan, the Karajan Fledermaus (live), Parsifal (live) and Deutsches Requiem + Dichterliebe (with Brendel).

  • Something happened to his voice mid-6o's - I've got a 2cd set of live recordings, and he sounds hoarse almost gruff on some of them.

His recording of Wozzeck was a bit of a shock to me as by then he sounded very strained, but I've grown to appreciate his interpretation of this very difficult part.

  • I agree with you that it's very good. Actually, I somewhat associated with DFD's precise style but with more 'fire' added to it.

  • Hi! It's so great to see there are still people reminding this great artist! I'm in love with Eberhard Wächter and would be so greatful for more videos and sounds! Eberhard, on t'aime! Wir lieben Dich! We love you! ;-)

Just here at his scream by Tristan in the Böhm version as Melot is coming with the King and Brangäne in the third act. "Hahahahaha, den Tag, an dem ich Dich treffe!" It's simply amazing! You know, this kind of singers who are singing directly from the heart is so rare!

  • Wow, we should start a group of Wachter fans!! Hehe. I'd like to add his interpretation of Papageno, very bright and happy, ever the optimist, he breezes through the part with such ease. Just taking what comes at him. and then the suicide aria he is perfect, desperate and determined--very human. ANd as another person has said here...he never hoots and growls like other baritones. So bright and easy production of sound! Sheer delight! Thanks!!!

  • yes, you are right. lets start a group *gg*

but i looked for viele Zeiten videos with him. I have only "Die Fledermaus" at home. why are no videos on youtube???????

  • absolutely perfect rendition of this difficult aria. the cd with guiliani is fabulous

  • At least he doesn't sound too wagnerian here. I hate when Don Giovanni sounds wagnerian. The only character that can have a touch (but no more than a touch) of it is the Commendatore.

  • I don't know any other opera or aria sung by him but I want to know. I wachted Thomas Hampson, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Simon Keenlyside but none of them has such a long breath as Wächter had. If I've enought time I'll upload the other arias on this CD like La ci darem la mano or di viene alla finestra.

  • You have to hear his Conte Almaviva in Giulini's "Nozze"!

In his big aria "hai gia vinta la causa" there is NO-one touching his interpretation; torn between jealousy and frustration, he almost sounds sexually aroused to suspect that intrigues are going on behind his back...

Nobody gives this sensual tone to this aria usually interpreted as plainly "angry".

  • Can you find a version of it on YouTube? "Hai già vinta la causa" is one of my favorite arias, I'd love to hear his version!

  • There is probably the best version of Die Fledermaus with him as the principle Eisenstein. I taped it many years ago off PBS but have never been able to find the original source. It was made as a movie. He has also done this role in other Fledermaus productions but I think the made as a movie version is the best. Particularly with the other singers. And the filming was wonderful.

    Hope that helps?

  • What to say... The ideal Don Giovanni, the greatest Count, heroic wagnerian (remember his Amfortas and Wolfram). One for all, listen to his spell of the storm in Solti's Rheingolg... never heard such a Donner. And he was so handsome and beautiful. Viril voice, strong, dark in timbre but easy to reach high notes. One of the unforgettable baritons of all times!

  • Dear amfortas83,

So good to read your words and to know there are still people remembering this great artist! He was my favourite singer and I hardly missed any of his performances here in Vienna. Still very sad about his sudden death in March 1992, seven months after he became director of the Vienna State Opera.
