I am very happy to see the vidoe after you give this Three Strange Definitions of Computer Programming Legendary computer scientist Edsger Dijkstra once said - Ron Burk
after i watched this video Three Strange Definitions of Computer Programming Legendary computer scientist Edsger Dijkstra once said, my insight is very open because the video is very good to give information
could not have said it better myself. it sucks that programmers don't get any true respect from like half the people in the world (unless they cherish their skills). can't wait to join in :)
@ExhibitMan The statement 'just a theory' is a misunderstanding of what the word theory means. A theory is not a casual guess. A theory is an explanation of a process or condition that IS externally verifiable (or in some definitions, externally disprovable.)
There is a large body of evidence that supports the existence of the theory of evolution. It's as incorrect to say evolution is 'just a theory' as it is to say that gravity is 'just a theory' or how our lungs work is 'just a theory'.
@ExhibitMan The speaker is stating that programming is a type of evolution. Just as the existence of multicellular organisms is a fact, and the evidence that they came from single celled organisms is a fact (they share a great deal of DNA to start with), he is stating that the existence of an open source movement where software is exchanged and also written by many people over time, is an example of an evolutionary process. Even disagreeing with that comparison is not saying evol is just theory
I had to play back the Feynman example a few times to understand. I think the point is the biographer assumed Feynman's brain and the paper represented one and the same but Feynman clarified a distinction that his body just imparted work on the paper. The meta point is that it's his mind that extends out to include the tools of the environment that is responsible?
The paper is an extension of the mind and certain thoughts are not possible with using the paper as a medium. The paper is a tool for looking inside the "brain" and deriving content that would not be possible without the paper.

I'm a computer programmer and I like those definitions. Next time someone asks me what I do, will say I create invisible patterns of energy.

But evolution is just a theory, not a fact. Programming is fact.

Is anyone else in the room?

@r32adt3db If there were, they were programmers so they'd simply write:
while (appreciatingSpeech) { clapCount++;
}

@r32adt3db Aw it was nothin'. Programming jokes are easy and rarely do I have a good audience for them ^.^
