Bloody good review. Its a plastic body though isn't it? Also, can you control the aperture, exposure and iso in video mode? Very important for me. Thanks
I just got this camera recently, I can I am a noob, and been a cyber-shot user for the 7 years. I wanted to upgrade to a canon rebel T3, but found this camera. I had to give it a go, and bought this on a whim. I was feeling a little buyer remorse for not getting the Canon, but your review has put me at ease. I feel I made the right choice. I wanted something easy, and I am glad to know that it will suit my needs.
lenses of nex system are so shit that i just prefer to use a good compact camera, there is no big difference. Unless you prefer use manual lenses with adaptator, dslr are far better.
I had mine last christmas. This camera is great. The menus are a little pain in the ass sometimes but with a little poke, you'll get used to it. I, at least, dont mind that it lacks dials like the usual slrs have, but that's just me. Im very happy with this camera. Thanks for the review
very nice review. i was gonna pick up the nex-5 from sony because it was @$499 (sold out now??!!?=/) but I think I'll spend the extra $50 and pick this one up instead. The newer sensor and features sound pretty good too. thanks xD
het blunty i was just wondering, is there a built in flash on this beauty or is the image quality good enough even when shooting with high ISO so that it's not needed?
just in case you would happen to bring it to a party or something like that and you really need to take pictures of a shot marathon...
@topaulandbeyond The Sony Nex-C3, Nex-5n and Nex-7 share similar quality, in ascending order. The highest ISO it can take pictures in without any grain is around 1000-1100, according to snapsort. I think this is more than enough, plus you could definitely rely on the PSAM modes to suit whatever situation you're in.
I can see the charm of this but for people who don't always carry around a tripod the tiny size of the body and the ratio of body-to-lens weight distribution will make most critical handheld shots more difficult that with a DSLR. Don't get me wrong, its got it charms, but i'll stick with my D3000
@U23Drocs I can understand why you would make that assumption, but as a man who spent a week shooting with it, it's actually not an issue, the balance is different to my DSLR yes, but it didn't actually hamper my ability to get handheld shots in any conditions.
@U23Drocs I own the C3 since a few days now, and you'd be surprised how light weight it is even with the large lens. There's a bulge on the right hand side that makes it easy to hold the camera firmly, even single handedly.
It is true tho that it it tips over toward the front when putting it on a flat surface or when carrying it around your neck.
It looks pretty ugly face on but I want one. The only thing holding me back from gettin a proper camera is that my phone wirelessly connects to my PS3 which makes backing things up then deletin them from the phone a lot fater than on a pc
Do the canon lenses require a super expensive adapter? Do they auto focus or manual only? I have a huge Canon lense collection but this camera looks phenomenal.
I love this Video! It shows all the Information about the camera, its a review, sample and just a simple explanation. You put the pictures of it for us to examine while you say all the specs nice moves. Thanks :)
Might have the same specs or better (without the mirror that is) than say a comparable Canon SLR like the 60D. Thing is, the lenses just can't compare with the variety Canon offers.
@hattrickster33 Well I've got good news.. you can still use all those Superb Canon Lenses on this ;) You even have the same crop-factor since the APS-C Sensor is identical in size to the on in the 60D!
Hey Blunty I LOVE your reviews, I had a question though do you have a review for a film + Digital Camera like Photographers for weddings etc. I have a film/photograhy student I want to buy something like that for and I would Love for a suggestion from someone intelligent.
Impressive camera. It is not surprising that Sony is leading with miniaturizing the body of the DSLR. Nice Screen too. that takes up almost the Whole back of the camera.
Awesome Review. I wonder how it will do over time and durability.
A decent review. You have come a long way Blunty. I have always found you entertaining, but have often disagreed with you. I studied Photography and a lot of people in the field scoff at these kind of cameras. It's good to see that you see that they do in fact have a place.
Wow. I was planning on buying sa DSLR but it's too heavy and bulky. And all I want is just really good picture quality. I wanna buy this someday... hopefully sometime in the near future.
Blunty, have you ever tried Sony NEX-5. If you have, could you tell if you can notice any significant difference in picture quality between it and this new NEX
@Jucketsx The main difference is feature-set, not image quality. Although the new upgraded sensor chip in the NEX-C3 is both slightly more sensitive & has ~2 extra megapixels. If you're looking to UPGRADE your NEX-5, I'd wait just a little longer for the upgrade to the 5 (C5?), or the even "more pro" (not quite officially confirmed), NEX-7 which is supposedly in it's way.
The NEX-C3 is a *fantastic* jumping-on point, but I don't see it as an upgrade path for existing NEX-5 owners
@Blunty3000 Hey man, if u ever get the chance, could u review the Sony DSC-HX100V/B? I'd like to hear an honest opinion, not juts it's so awesome ,so good and leave the cons behind.
I had the chance to try on of these and the Olympus E-PL1, I would have to say what made the huge difference for me was that Sony had to get add the digital settings dial. I don't like that, I would prefer to have the actual dial and change mode without ever losing the image. Although I am not a Camera genius such as yourself, I found the old Olympus much easier to use.
It has more ram than my computer it takes better camera shots then my phone it certainly costs more than both of those, and I don't care, it may be expensive but darn it's a great piece of technology and I need a camera that can do what a decent camera should do and more! I'm glad you made this review and now It's time to save up some serious cash
WOW, i may have to get a Sony for my next camera. I imagine it would make killer videos if i added on a better microphone? Poor sound quality was my one big disappointment on my current Panasonic tz5. Cheers
@Blunty3000 Blunty, can you please request the folks at Sony to give you a cheaper camcorder model such as HDR-CX150 to do a review...as we love your reviews but we'd like some cheaper options...please!
Also, would you ever consider making a video about what you need & how to get into photography? I really have always wanted to but I don't know where to even start! Thanks
If sony brings out a compact 28mm f/2.8 lens that makes this more pocketable then i'll grab one - But I see no point replacing or substituting my DSLR with one of these babies if she doesn't get in your pants easily. Pants pocket I mean :)
I gotta admit, I haven't been the most religious viewer and watched all of your recent videos. But after watching this, I still know it's good to be subscribed to you. You've made a review that a photography-illiterate fella like me can understand, as well as cater it to the more intellectual cameraladies&gentlemen. Or at least, I assume so from the fancy camera speak here and there. Good work!
@AuraQualic It has a dedicated video button, it'll shoot in whatever mode you have it set for, including manual, or any of the specialty modes that and continuous auto-focus means it's actually more capable than the Canon DSLR's in video mode.
love the camera but not the price :D well it seems i have to work hard to get myself a normal camera :( its 757AUD in hungarian forints :( (and thats the cheapest i found so far :( )
This review sounded more like a really really good ad (as always, if Blunty likes it he really shows how). But it worked. I really really want one. I wish Sony has a lot more range in lenses though.
Just adding in a completely useless comment regarding the quality of these NEX babies... Having worked at a Sony Centre when the first models were released and taking one home for a few weeks, they are nothing short of quality. Good to see they're keeping up their game!
@tman383 For the love of zombiejesus... WHY can't people WATCH the video first... THEN ask questions that *haven't* already been fucking answered IN the damn video?
@MinDControlDx No. Neither did the NEX-3. However, the NEX-5 DID, and it's reasonable to assume when its replacement arrives it will too. So if you require exposures longer then 30 seconds (the max of the NEX-C3) then I'd suggest waiting for the new higher end model of the second-gen NEX cameras.
@holydogable You mean the bit where I mentioned the size difference? ... If you didn't hear my carefully chosen words properly, you COULD have just scrubbed the video back and listened again... Please do try to pay attention. Redundant and needless questions are fucking irritating.
my personal experience with this camera; went to check it out at the store, liked the specs, and design, but then i noticed the price and it scared me shitless.
love your reviews, if the item is good you hype me up get it and if it's bad you still go though everything to show exactly what's bad and the things that are still good.
Bloody good review. Its a plastic body though isn't it? Also, can you control the aperture, exposure and iso in video mode? Very important for me. Thanks

Hey Blunty are you on a holiday or something? Is that the reason why you're in the outback?
donkeykongman0 6 months ago
Did you just compare a micro 4/3's sensor to a dslr?
holydogable 6 months ago
@holydogable You mean the bit where I mentioned the size difference? ... If you didn't hear my carefully chosen words properly, you COULD have just scrubbed the video back and listened again... Please do try to pay attention. Redundant and needless questions are fucking irritating.

Every time I watch one of these, I think about how much I'd love to get into photography. Then I catch the USD on it, and I remember how poor I am :P

Man... this camera is awfully tempting. After a few years of cheap digital camera's it may be time to step up and look at something like this.

they need to make these even smaller lol for that price.
FoxMedina 6 months ago
love your reviews, if the item is good you hype me up get it and if it's bad you still go though everything to show exactly what's bad and the things that are still good.

it's looks a little old.. but it's got some awesome features
kctwistie2 6 months ago
@kctwistie2 Looks old? It's brand new!
Blunty3000 6 months ago
@Blunty3000 Haha no!! I mean it looks old fashioned- well kind of. Compared to the cannon, dslr anyway. Did you take the photos in NT? :)
kctwistie2 6 months ago
@kctwistie2 Most of the shots in this were taken in NT yes.
Blunty3000 6 months ago
@kctwistie2 it looks old fashioned because it has it's lens on , when you remove that (you shouldn't! its great) it will look like a cannon one.
