  • The name of the show should be, "nigger talk". It's all about crybabies niggers whining about slavery and everything else.

Hell, American has GiVEN niggers education, jobs, housing, food, money, and everything under the sun. Yet, they still bitch and complain like lazy bitches.

  • Why do blacks call each other "brother"? No other race does that. It sounds so stupid.

  • @g55coffia

You're an idiot! We have to acknowledge solidarity among ourselves because of folks like you and yours who don't have any idea as to what it means to hold on in this society.

  • can anyone enlighten me as to why Dr. King's speech is so often referred to as ïnfamous." Famous yes, but why could it be considered infamous?

  • Some people do not understand the black elite and black political leaders GROOMED Barack Obama. Barack Obama did not emerge out of nowhere he was trained, and got help from powerful African Americans. Also, why shouldn't Obama be aware of black concerns. Obama should NOT take the black vote for granted! Black people have a RIGHT to criticize Obama.

  • THANK YOU wh0m33!

Bozo wouldn't even mess with these three

  • cornell west....''all the sacrificing that's gone into barack's...'' what sacrifices. he had the presidency practically handed to him without paying any dues. he jumped to the head of the line and snatched the presidency with the greatest ease of anyone in history. he will go down as one of the most bizarre and radical individuals to ever occupy the white house. it will be seen as a gross error on the part of millions of otherwise clear-thinking whites who were responsible for his election.

  • Sacrifices refers to the people who came BEFORE Barack.

  • Hilary spoke about black history to gain the black vote. Be proud and embrace the moment. To keep things in perspective, GOD put him in this place. Not you, myself, or anybody else. It GOD is for him, who can be against him.

  • How you like OBAMA NOW bitches!!!!!!

  • ;;;

  • I have to disagree with the comments by this comedy team of Lucy and Dezi. Barack's victory was about AMERICA, not Black America. Why can't these 2 educated clowns see that. They look like a couple of cartoon characters, tavis included.

  • Damn all my life i waited for this speech, and two people i have loved most are complaining about a great moment. As intelligent as they are, they miss the point. This was about the journey, not Dr,King. We know about Dr. King should Barack have spoke of Malcolm, Medgar, Fredrick, Fannie, come on! This is a new moment let it stand on its on. Damn let it go for one night.

  • Julianne Malveaux: I remember when she said USA was made of "250 million little white bigots". Girl you are a RACIST.

Cornel West: A fake intellectual spouting gibberish, which is his trademark. BTW has anyone else noticed that he hates people whose skin shade is white. Fuck you Cornel West. If Obama would have listened to ur inane babbling, he would have sounded as in coherent & bigoted as u. God Bless Barack for having an insight into the mind of decent white folks. Fuck you Racist Cornel.

  • I know what you mean but you can see Hilary supports its sad. This man is President and he knows he has a lot to deal with ignorant press like this, kkk, and so on. Point blank he is going to do fine but he has a lot to deal with. It is not easy.

  • But lorcaliph514 do you not see that Dr King IS the journey, its not like he had to, but isnt it strange that he didn't? If it werent for these exceptional heroes that fought for human rights against a hatred, enslavement and murder rape of people because they had a different colour skin, would we still be "owned"?

Dont get me wrong Obama has done well to make it this far, but he didnt do it on his own. Leaders fought for something bigger than just themselves, than acheiving the top job.

  • Cornel West hit it on the head when he said "you can't follow tradition without acknowledging the past." We all know that Obama is black, but Obama has really yet to display OWNERSHIP that he's black. This is what they are saying. They still support him, but they expected more. Obama is a great public speaker. However, this could have came from his campaign advisers.

  • Obama belongs to America, not just the black community. I think Obama has recognized the past, but he also understands that it's his position to serve all the people equally, and not play sides.

He's in a tough position, and he has to walk his tightrope with balance.

  • @GentlemanJimStacey

I agree with you. When campaigning for a leadership position of a nation you don't want to speak in ways that are only directed at your ethnic group. If this was the NAACP it would be a different ball game. But again when campaigning for the leadership of a Nation the citizens are expecting for you to make just decisions and lead all people. And He/She must instill the confidence within us that he/she will do just that.

  • I disagree with their statements. This was a speech about American and I'm an African American. He doesn't have to put out there how black he is. Everyone knows he's black.

  • @mrscorie - Thank You... ONE DROP! People have forgotten that. In Alabama, Obama is a nigger and THAT makes him Black. In Mississippi he will be a nigger which classifies him as Black. All of a sudden; yes; all of an effen sudden, we're part White now?

  • All these black 'intellects' don't know anything about the current political situation. They want this man to be a black panther only speaking on black issues, then lose an election. Unless they want to vote for Mccain's old ass, they should talk about the future, not the past. We also know the state of the black community and how their generation has let us down. And now that we know what we need to do to take things a step further the old blacks want to hate, because they aren't it.

  • then Cornel West, Dr. malveau, and TAvis should run For president since they are so right on about race issues! let them run since they have all the answers!!! since they know better than everyone else. Or better yet everyone that supports them just run a campaign so that they can run. Better Yet lets just all vote for John McCain since he addresses our issues all the time!

  • I'm glad this video has been posted. I can't say this enough, and this is why I will not be voting for Barack, "If he downplays race to gain power. He will downplay race to maintain power." This will be the first time in my life that I vote for a republican and I will do so gladly. John McCain is in favor of school choice and we, African-Americans are the greatest benefactors of school voucher programs. Obama's kids don't go to public schools, but our kids in poor neighborhoods are suppossed to?

  • dimegood, you're comment about school vouchers is idiotic. John McCain's proposal is for vouchers of 2 thousand dollars, which couldn't pay for any private school with a strong academic reputation and certainly not John McCain's fancy boarding school he went to in Virginia (the Episciopal School), where he was a poor student.

  • joharmon, you are a liar. From the Pew Forum:

"McCain supports vouchers that would allow students to attend public or private schools, including religious schools, arguing that "it's time to give middle- and lower-income parents the same right wealthier families have -- to send their child to the school that best meets their needs."

This sounds a lot more helpful to students and parents caught in a horrible situation than what Obama proposes, which is to basically tell them, "too bad".

  • And how does McCain propose to fund this? With the "wonderful budget" that inbred, bible-thumping douche is leaving behind? If you listen to McCain's speeches all it is - political pandering - never really addressing the issues; merely pointing them out and offering unrealistic solutions. A Veteran, who was in the POW camp with McCain, says much of McCain's POW experience was exaggerated and called the others traitors (in his book) and vice versa. Who has more to gain?

  • highclerist listen, Obama is the one who is proposing TRILLIONS of dollars in spending and not a single indication as to how he will foot the bill. That's not even an issue that ANY economist has with John McCain, so let's not go there. As for McCain's POW experience, if you are comfortable criticizing that. If your conscious is okay with that then go right ahead. You can be for Obama without saying ignorant things you know? What you are saying makes you sound brainwashed and irrational.

  • Did I praise Obama? Look who's brainwashed friend, of course we don't want to question McCain because he's a "national hero" in a war more useless than the Iraqi war. I'm not for either 'cause our votes don't mean shit when it's decided by the electoral college with the exception of a few states. Ridiculous proposals from both parties aside, Obama's spending estimate is honest compared to the bullshit McCain tries to feed us.

  • Besides joharmon, how many parents in the hood do you think could afford the fancy private school that Obama attended? Let's not start telling those lies again as if he is some poor kid from the ghetto because he's not. There isn't a single, food stamp receiving woman in the hood who could afford a flight for she and her son to INDONESIA. Obama is a fraud and he's played over black folks long enough. I pray he will be crushed in November. I'm positive he will be.

  • I have he highest respect for the panel there, but to argue over semantics at time like this is just plain tacky. I mean have they not paid attention to how Obama makes a speach before. He has always made references to people without dropping names even unto hiself, refering to him a skinny kid from Illinois. Far be it for Obama to say something like "A preacher from Georgia" on the 45th aniversary of the I Have A Dream speech, and not expect people to not make he connection. Get a grip Tavis.

  • I guess we should believe that Sean Hannity and Bill Oreilly are making people accountable and critically thinking as well. We all know they are fair and balanced.

  • I mean I think this is kind of far fetched to draw such parallels between Hannity and O'reilly to Malveuax and West. These two are giving you their real feelings on Barak. They share in the joy of him being the first but criticize him in being weak for not addressing race. Can't their criticism just be genuine. They like Barak, but think he is not strong enough on race issues so the moment which could have meant more meant a little less.

  • This way we know exactly we know where they are coming from.

  • Okay!! I think that its great that "Our Black Leaders are trying to make others accountable and are thinking critically" Great! But I do think we know as black people what's fair and balanced. I can look at Fox news and know that they are not fair and balanced! I can look at CNN coverage and tell its not fair and balanced! And I can say the same thing about these 3! I would respect them more if they would just come out and say what it is that don't like about Obama

  • I think they are saying it. They are expressing discontent with how Barak Obama is handling the black agenda. Its like what Barak is doing is great politically but.... many of us don't feel our agenda is getting enough attention. And what is to assure us that it ever will. Politicans have to answer to different lobbyist groups Abortion, Labor, Environmentalist why can we not hold them to the black Agenda? We should thats what Tavis has been calling for for years.

  • It's funny but but it's true when they say "sometimes it's your own people". These black intellectuals are out of touch, just as out of touch as the Republican party. Old school black thought is too militant to be progressive, we all can't move foward if we're constantly looking backwards.

  • I'm disappointed you feel that way about these black intellectuals. They are not too militant to be progressive. They are historically sound enough to know that their are myriad of ways that mainstream America and white supremacy has attacked black people in this country. If we don't stand for our own and we run from the history we cannot create a better future. The real stand up black people we respect have dealt with racial issues head on. Barak is doing a great amount of compromising...

  • NO one will be able to help black people, unless they are in position to do so. No one will get in the position, by speaking about the community that American wishes was just here for entertainment. The old civil rights era people got us this far, and are now holding us back. The new black intellects know what we need to do, with out selling out. This is why even Farrakhan supports Obama, and this is why all the real, new, EFFective, intellects support Obama. I hope Obama ignores these people.

  • he cannot make his speech about solely "black" issues. the man is not the prez of blk america, he has many constituencies to cater to. blk intellectuals need to sit down. let the man run his campaign, there will never be the blk savior that these ppl want, its not coming down the pipeline, deal with it

  • While I have been critical of Obama on his avoidance of the Black agenda and I respect these scholars, these critiques are WRONG. He did mention MLK, he didn't need to mention Hamer. It was the best speech of the convention. How can he be running from history when the whole event was framed around that same history. I'm amazed at how off these folks are. It's like they saved up long standing issues they had with Obama and now they are expressing them, but the points don't match the moment.

  • I agree with you hornybo. That exactly what its. Barak delivered a brilliant political speech but the way he has handled race and the balck agenda has been weak. Malveaux and West have been feeling the same way just used this moment to express their discontent. But this moment could have been monumental had he addressed the black agenda somewhat.

  • Lastly, you know how your parents would get mad at you for coming with all kinds of shyt the minute they'd come from work or wherever. They'd say, "Let me get in the house first before you tell me anything."

Well let Obama get in the White House before you want him to turn into the big angry Black man who is going to wave a wand and undo all the wrongs toward African-American from the past 400 years!

  • 3. Jackson has NOT been gracious. Since when saying you gonna cut someone balls off is considered racist. Jackson is upset that Obama did not OPENLY acknowledge. Why because Jackson has baggage and Obama has enough with carrying this Negroes with him.

    4. This was not about making history...it IS historic. They are whining about not mentioning this or that person, do not give him real credit for mention the issue. This means he is still not Black enough to them.

  • "considered gracious"

  • Aight Bushy we get your point too Malveaux over did the Jackson being gracious spiel but lets not act like Obama wasn't birthed out of the Political tradition Jesse Jackson was the key archetict of The black affluent chicago community and grassroots political cutthroat southside system that produced and supported Obama was basically established by Jackson and validated by Chicago Mayor Harold Washington Jesse basically is the Big Daddy Kane to Obama's Jay-ZI mean his son is running Obama campain

  • It is funny how you have all these negative words concerning Barack Obama form three people who have not been supports of Obama at all.

    1. This is the type of whining you get from the Black Intelligentsia in America who feel they have been left out by Obama. That he has acted arrogantly that he does not need them.

    2. MLK did NOT pass anything to Jesse Jackson. Why, he was murdered and Jackson assumed it as if he was heir apparent.

  • the black culture/race simply does not command the respect to make assimilation unnecessary in a majority white environment. i wish things were different, but they are not. still, even though he hasn't spoken to my struggle, i appreciate the fact that obama hasn't nasalized his tone to appear more docile like so many negros have learned to do.

  • Also I have listened to Tavis and Dr. West speak several times about certain topics. Like when they were so appalled by the mega preachers making so much money. Until they got in on making some of the money with them. Now they are doing the same thing to Obama! They are pissed and jealous because he really doesn't need them. And their tone, intention of words, body language and everything they say comes across as BITCHASSNESS!!!!! WE are not stupid to see and know what they are doing!

  • Don't shit on Tavis, West, and Malveaux like that. This crticism clearly is not driven by finacial incentives. If it was these 3 would after Obama with the blind Optmism like many of their counterpart. Is that hard to believe that some of us they is a legacy and that they are issues that are in bigger in Black America than just Obama running a Jackie Robinson campaign to get elected. Labor Unions hold their candidates feet to the fire, Abortion pundits support based on their issues......

  • I am so sick of arrogant elitist people thinking that black are just stupid! I like and respect Tavis, Cornel, and Dr.Maleaux. But please don't think they we are not caple of making a decision about hwo to vote for. We are not voting for Barack just because he is black. We are caple of of listening to the issues and doing research to know what candidate to vote for.

  • As black people West and Malveaux are adequately representing how we as black people should be analyzing politics. Never should we compromise the integrity of the black struggle for social and human rights just to win a symbolic victory. Now I support Obama with all my heart and I never respond or write on a youtube blog. But people have driven me crazy acting like certain certified leaders that disagree with certain Obama stances are uncle toms or sellouts. Are you negroes serious?

  • What some black people dont understand is that Obama can't run (AND WIN) as the black candidate. He can only say ima black man but so many times before white people start thinking that he has a separate agenda for the black community.

  • These three FOOLS would rather McCain win. To speak out even whisper again the man running against McCain is counterproductive. Especially if that's all we have. Flawed or unflawed, right or wrong, Obama's the best we have right now. PLEASE consider the alternative and let Obama run his campaign with out the catty, jealous irrelevance.

  • I support Obama 100% but can't I criticize him when I think he's weak black issues. I definitely know Dr. West has earned that right. They support Obama as well but when your using the legacy of the black struggle to catapult your way into the presidency we have a right to hold you accountable to us just like the jewish community, the environmentalist, and the labor unions. Heavy is the head that wears that crown, but if he's the man that you claim he is he's up for the challenge.

  • Dr. West disappoints me. Yeah, he has the balls to say white supremacy, of course because he's irrelevant. If obama brings up that issue, every white person involved in his campaign is gonna think he's a racist. You can't expect him to just throw those issues out there and win, because he's running for the president of the UNITED STATES, not BLACK FOLKS IN THE UNITED STATES. At first I wanted him to speak on things too, then I realized he wouldn't get far if he did. Let's just hope he can win.

  • I hope they cast their votes for McCain/Palin. When they get into the White House, I hope they smile and continue to criticize Obama as Affirmative Action gets revoked and minorities are reduced to second class citizens. Tavis, I want you to smile as they breakdown the set of your "no-rated" talk show and send you home crying, unemployed, and broken.

  • The ruling elite love these kind of black folks. You may ask why?

Because they can be used to divide Americans using the racist DIVIDE AND CONQUER ideology.

Wonder why the news mdia love the jesse jackson types, .....

Thanks God, we now have Obama who may finally bring together all americans.

  • #2 angry black leaders of the past...

Quit blaming everything on other people,

Cornel west is always talking about white supremcy, You have your own lives there is no gigantic "plan" to keep black people down fools.

  • Are you serious. There's no plan to keep black people down. Foollio do you know anything about American history. Smarten up before you blog, write or even talk. American history speaks completely contrary to your statment.

  • these niggas need to shut the fuck up

niggas like this make me sick always talking about the past... nobody gives a shit about slavery and MLK anymore its not about that shit

we all people so shut the fuck up with complaining black people in this video

  • Thank you Tavis, Cornel and Julianne for being on the "We Hate Obama Committee," for embarrassing the Black community by being selfish enough to actually air something to upstage what is another mark in history.

Makes me wonder if you all work for McCain or still mad that Obama didn't make it to your show.

  • valeryj Come on. Did you not hear DR. West who is on his Campaign commitee give him props and state that he supports Barak. Some of you guys are too emotional about this symbolism that Barak represents. But if he dosen't really show flashes of representing us (Blacks) is him becoming President really that spectacular of a moment? Black established leaders have earned the right to criticize Obama without being called uncle toms. We all will vote for him but we have to keep politicians in check.

  • UNBELIEVABLE!!!! R u serious?! Why did he need to give a 'shout out' in order to gain approval from these two?? WTH?? I was very inspired, impressed, and engaged!! And I shed a tear or two...I don't know what speech they were watchin...I very disappointed by this...

  • These '3' are straight missin' the point & the big picture. You are witnessing a 'dying breed' of so called 'black leaders'. They ought to be ashamed of themselves up there dry hatin' like this. Pure jealously. Last thing...HE DID NOT HAVE TO MENTION MARTIN IN HIS SPEECH. PERIOD!! He did it in his own way. The speech was NOT about KING...or OBAMA....It was about ALL OF US.

  • How would u feel if it seemed that all of ur past efforts were being disregarded & thrown away & not truly being acknowledged... Just read thru the comments on the blog. These people are scholars. They are the same as Barack. They came before Barack. Why should a candidate get a pass b/c he's smart & black & handsome. He is running for office. It's ok to scrutinze what he says & does.& If ur gonna use the anniversary as the date to give ur speech...he should mention the man. he changed the world

  • Hopefully this type of leadership is not a dying breed otherwise the black community is really in alot of trouble. If we only have middle of the road, don't know where they stand on black issue politicians, and no scholars that can speak truth to power we are in a dire situation as a people. Of course Barak appeased mainstream America and made his elequent pitch to fix all of America. But as a Black Man Im am interested in who wants to help empower Black America. This leadrship is still needed!

  • He didn't hit it out the park? COME ON! That old uncle tom action is out dated! Barack had Martin Luther King's kids at the convention!!! I have lost all respect for Tavis and his homies...

  • Word. It feels like a "Hatin' Party."

  • It is unfortunate that so many of our well respected and very well educated African-American scholars and commentators cannot see the big picture. Please get it people. If Barack ever wants to be president of this America he must have global appeal not just cater to the needs of black america. I know these people are smart enough to get that. So how 'bout we shut tha' fu** up and support this man (who truly deserves our support) instead of making his journey that much more difficult.

  • Obviously, U don't get it. Why does anyone automatically deserve our support. Whut is the point of getting into office & not having the needs of the people met. It's ok for people to voice their disapproval of Barack. There are questions that they want answered. People are so stuck on the presidency that the substance of the candidate is being swept under the rug. It's not a good deal. It's our job to speak out. That's how we keep abuse of power in check. U want to hand him the world just b/c.

  • How egocentric of you all to believe that our nation's racial problems outweigh healthcare and education for EVERYONE. Get over it black people, Get up and get going! Here is the right candidate for the job and what do black people do; bitch and moan that he's not black enough.

  • I didn't say that racial issues outweigh those issues. But consider this since when have mainstream american politics considered the health care, and education of those in the black community. They don't care because they are the very ones who deprived us in the 1st place. If Black Americans have learned one thing from history its that for the most part we are in our fight alone. So we must hold our own accountable.

  • politically this type of criticism helps obama w/ white america b/c it supports the notion (in their minds) that he is not part of the black "victimhood" establishment. Ironically, as Hillary's campaign shows, white women can be economically successful and still take advantage of a victim status, whereas a black man who is wrongfully accused of a crime cannot. To many, to legitimately criticize a white woman such as Palin is outright chauvinism/sexism. McCain is taking advantage of this.

  • wow, the 'crabs in the bucket' theory permeates every sector of society. tavis, i don't know what barack has done to you. but you seem to be on a bent to make sure that dissension rules. and now you have a couple of power forwards to assist you, huh? willie lynch is havin' a field day in his grave!

  • Malveaux lost me when she praised Hillary Clinton.

  • We must get him in office, before he sheds light on anything. Are you not hearing all the positive he is about. Don't shine a light on his (what you deem) flaws. Shhhhhhhh, masa gonna here you. Don't you get it, Rasputin

  • No I get it. I really do. But this kind of why people were asking whether he's black enough. It wasn't just a crabs in a barrel mentality, its questioning whether or not he really has the credentials to be considered the 1st black president. Does he really have our interest as black people at the forefront. This is why most people didn't think a black president was achievable because no one thought there would be a candidate who would be willing to compromise the legacy of black struggle so much

  • So what's the alternative. I'd rather have half of an Obama than a whole war monger, tax hiking, elderly McCain. Black people need to stop bitching and complaining about acknowledgements. MLK jr. died so this man could run for office with no explaination needed and no question of his blackness. You all disgrace Dr. King with this madness.

  • It seems that even our own black people are hating on this man...Shut the fuck up and get a life you loosers. Neither one of you could ever be in obama's shoes. Its not his job to always speak about just blacks and what were going through. Dont you realize that would fuck up his chances to take office. Shit makes me sick to my stomach. Their gonna be all on his dick once he takes office.

  • Obama is not a black leader, in the same vein as Malcolm, Martin, or Dubois. He is a biracial candidate (part Kenyan) for president who happens to have dark skin. Obama didn't drop the ball. The civil rights leaders did by making integration the goal instead of black economic empowerment and unity. Why black-Americans are expecting him to be something he is not is beyond me.

  • Squirrel your right. Maybe us black critical over thinkers are expecting way too much from Barak... But then again he is using the legacy of Civil Rights Leadership and the black struggle in his pitch for change to America. Should we not take that seriously. Should he go unchecked when he is basically representing to Mainstream America that he will be the first Black Man representing as President. By claiming that cross, he automatically invites the scrutiny and responiblity that comes with it

  • I agree...Why use the date as an undertone in order to give gravity to the moment & then not use the moment fully & ackowledge it properly w/in a 40+ min speech. I thought the sspeech was good like a term paper was good. He Felt it important to hit all of the bullets that his opponents & the punditscritcize him for. Why not the historical aspect of the nite as well. Will he answer thos critique in the same manner?

  • Although, I respect Dr. West and Dr. Malveaux, this is ridiculous. The speech he gave was a political one not one for black history month. You can't give a speech about the black man's history every time you take a mic. There are other people that are being serviced by this man,not just blacks.

  • Thank you!! Thank you!! Thank you!! I am speechless about this...I feel like bloggin' and I hate bloggin!!!

  • Jett31 I hear you on that. Point well made. But its like every time he gets an opportunity to shed some light or represent just a little a bit he backs down. From Rev Wright who we all know was telling the truth, to skipping out on Tavis' State of Black America symposium nobody gets that much of a pass. Everyone needs to be accountable and I'm glad West and Malveaux will hold leadership to that standard even if its unpopular at the time.

  • & that's what the drs say when they say blacks don't want their votes taken for granted as though it's just a given. They want their issus addressed.

  • wow...i cant believe what im hearing. the man just was elected the democratic nominee. first black man to hold this nomination! what more do u want from this man? WHAT MORE!

  • No crabs here brother. Tavis, Cornell, Malveaux, and I support Barak... but we have a right to constructively criticize Obama. He is not above reproach especially when Black America is on the line. You know none them are going to vote for the Mcain. He's not even an option. But are you telling me two of Black Americas greatest minds cannot disagree with the man. Be serious! This is politics and he is riding on the legacy of a people who died for his opportunity. Nobobody gets that much of apass

  • That's the whole point. Everyone is so enthralled by Barack that they make it a sin to disagree w/ anything he says....or ask him to be accountable to demands of the people. That's whut this is all about. The people want to know if their needs will be met. Their vote is the only leverage they have before giving another the power to speak on their behalf. So all questions are valid. That's what the drs want. They want to be acknoleged & know their issues are considered. That's the point of it all

  • it's odd to me how critical we as blacks are... we don't have room to honestly scrutinize Barack because ultimately the question is who is the alternative, McCain. And you are blind if you think Barack won't be better for blacks than McCain; let dude get in office first! As for the history argument, of course MLK laid the foundation no doubt but to get up and memorialize him during that speech wasn't the place... he did a great job and it's sad to see the crab mentality in the mix

  • I was less than impressed with how he handled the situation with Rev Wright whom we all know is telling the truth. He should have been at Tavis Symposium, Hillary was there he legimately should have been there. And now he can't speak to the March on Washington when that is exactly the ticket that got him. The problem is Obama's campaign is making mainstream America feel vindicated of the historical sins of racism. Mainstream America as a result is attempting to convince us that racism is no mor

  • Hillary was there because her schedule allowed. I think we can all agree that Barack has a much more demanding schedule of any of the candidates. He can not shrug off a prior committment. Black, white, or otherwise we all have to agree with that. Barack has shown up to "black" events here in my state of NC. On Father's Day he gave a great speech at a black church about the role of the black family (which sparked Rev. Jackson's ugly comments) As a black race we have to be more realistic.

  • wow! if thats the case how about you just not vote fro him and not listen to the mainstream media..use yor own head ..you don't have to feed in to the media..damn ...when you look in the mirror what do you see? who do you hope to be?

  • This is my example of African Americans who enjoy negativity and why we can never move forward. Barack was not focusing on the past mistakes of America but the hope for a better future. We all know Katrina was bad, God bless his soul, Martin Luther King Jr. was a great man, but just because he is black doesn't mean we have to relive these things EVERY DAMN YEAR. I agree with Shealicious21, Obama is the President of America and represents the COUNTRY AS A WHOLE. NOT just black people.

  • Tavis Smiley is still upset that Barack did not sit on the panel for the Black State of the Union. Barack personally contacted him to express that he had regret that his schedule would not allow him to come but Michelle could come in his place. Tavis DECLINED to have Michelle sit on the panel. Michelle Obama is an outstanding mind and a smart and well spoken person on her own.

What they fail to realize is Barack is running for president of American not president of black people!

  • AMEN! I agree one million percent!

  • Are we to believe that Race is no longer an issue because one very safe very "non-threatning" black man from Hawaii has become the poster child for "change" in Mainstream America? Maybe other Black folks are easily bamboozled but not I. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton represent the Civil Rights Struggle and the black community without compromise the best they can. Cornell West and Dr. Malveaux are great minds who have earned the right to criticize Barak when he is weak and hold him accountable!!!

  • But you see the problem is they all have that double standard thing going on with them. If you didnt realize it by now Obama is really trying to detach himself from that. They want Obama to talk about certain things and Empower black people, while he is running as president of america, but if it was a white candidate, and a smart white DR. was urginh his white candidate to empower his white poor community, they would have called him racist. That's the problem in america. DOUBLE-STANDARD!

  • I feel and definitely agree with what your saying to a certain exetent. Of coure Obama couldn't have won the nomination by running a campaign that focused strictly on the needs of African Americans. In fact he must be very careful about how he approaches racial issues. But I also think that everytime Obama has the oppourtunity to stand up for or Clarify or speak to race he drops the ball.

  • not really tho....it's not like he is choosing to defend white america or saying black america don't matter. He is just saying he wont play that little game we the minority like to play, and pulling the race card. He got far without trying to use a certain group at his advantage. he is working hard not to put any differences between any group. And that's my reason for supporting him. He's not really calling people by race but by class and situations.

  • Yeah addressing class is cool... but come on African Americans make up 60 percent of the democratic voting base. Blacks overwhelmingly helped this man achieve this great political feats. All I'm saying is Properly Acknowledge the struggle that allowed for your success. And understand that there is more at stake than just the presidency.

  • wow ..your kidding right?..`he has acknowledged the past by pursing educational excellence, serving the community, fathering his kids and loving his wife..he is an example to us all both black and white and you want to drag his accomplishments thru the mud because he didnt mention Dr. King? WOW! I wonder if Dr. King would have been mad Barack didnt say his name or wud he just be proud of his accomplishments?

  • why does everyone think that Barack should be given office w/out being questioned. Why is anyone who says "how are u going to address my needs" called a hater. listen B.O. is not the first black man to do those things u mentioned. He reps something positive. yes. but these folks who lived thru the turbulence just want to know they are not still being ignored. they've done the very same things u say serve as inspiration. I don't see u critcal of every1 on the blog 4 cutting them down.

  • Cornell west got upset that Barack didnt make his presidential decleration at a historic black monument/site. Why should he be critized for that. This is our country too. We built it. Why do blacks always think we have to be confined to our own spaces. Thats what racist expect from us. they want us to stay in our places and tear each other down

  • beautifully spoken

  • hence, the disapproval by the 2 west & malveaux. The speech was given oon the anniversaty of the IHD speech. Go back & watch it in it's entirety. That speech wasn't about BLack power. That speech was about accountability of a nation to live up to it's recorded vision. It was about world progress. The crowd was littered w/ blacks & whites. Oboma missed the opportunity to discuss a dream realized. He used the date. but he didn't acknowledge the triumph of our nation on that day.

  • I strongly agree with Dr. West. As a Black man I support Obama with all my heart and soul but he has disappointed me on numerous occasions in his response to African American issues. I believe a great deal of his historic campaign has represented progress but a great deal of his campaign has watered down the Black struggle for power and equality in America.

  • I cant believe I'm about to say anything bad about Dr. West but he is clearly out of his mind and so is Dr. Malveaux. I find this whole discussion upsettiong, disgusting, irresponsible, and for a lack of a better word "haterish" (which I know is not a real word). Obama made one of the best speeches in American history and this speech recently was added to the top 10 speeches in american history! I dont think they actually listened. Sad, Sad, Sad....

  • I totally agreee. This is rediculous and I can no longer respect these three individuals at all. Tavis Smiley is still hating and who knows what the other two agendas are.

  • They must of missed the speech or weren't listening... Intellectual Masterbastion @ it's finest! Obama has to get more than the Black vote to win this election, and I'm sure they are smart enough to understand that. Everybody in the audience & 38 million damn people knew who he was referring to when he spoke of a preacher from Georgia. He embodies the dream and he is living King's legacy. Sometimes Black folk can be their own worst enemy!

  • Thank you!

  • i hate old black ppl. i fuckin swear. black power and shit shut da fuck up. why dont we stop shootin each other and get jobs then we can say the man is keepin us down bitches

  • I agree 100%. Just like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. These two no longer need to be allowed on tv.

  • @ Reggies22;

You are spot on. "Black on black crime at the highest level".

LET HIM GET IN OFFICE FOR GOD'S SAKE.

He isn't "Running from history", he's RUNNING FOR OFFICE Cornell.

These so called activists are so much dumber than they themselves believe.

  • who are these whiny black panthers bitches? honestly complaining he didnt say mlk is just absurd. mlk was the past obama is the future

acting like hillary loves black people these are some dumb mother fuckers, but then the intelligent black people dont hate white people like these fools

  • In many of Barack's speeches you all would find the Mr. Obama is a very poetic writer or who ever writes for him is also ..... in poetry you dont always name things by name yet you give the obvious describtion of it so people in the audience can be AW WOW that was an awesome line. Note: obvious so please stop hating guys.......... like he never said MLK's name before. Yall think we ignorant like Jesse Jackson lol.

  • He didn't drop the baton! He carried it proudly and effectively. You can't please everyone and he understands that. I think he did a great job and Hillary did a great job. But there is a difference between he and Hillary and how they are preceived. She mentions Harriet and is praised. He mentions anything black and he looks like just another black guy trying to use old rhethotric and history as a crutch. Move forward.

  • This is sad. Julianne Malveaux is off her rocker. Her "heart is broken because he didn't mention Dr. King by name". Wow! Obama doesn't have to name drop to be noticed. He spoke about Dr. King for 5min. It's funny he didn't say his name but you knew who he was talking about. Isn't that enough? It's about moving forward and into the future and Obama is that. These so called educated people have lost focused. Black on black crime at the highest level. We're looking at history, His Story.

  • exactly!!!

  • People i'm black. Please stop calling the dude african american, or black. Barack hussein Obama is a mix man half white half black. Damn stop with the bullshit.

  • HATERS!!!! i dont know bout them but that speech was historic. Barack was trying to reach out to America, not just one race. Damned if you do and Damned if you dont. They need to stop hating.

  • Remember when that guy was one of the Elders on the Matrix movies?

  • They sound like some haters to me. Tavis Smiley has been hating on Barack from the beginning. What they don't seem to understand is, he's not going to be what they want him to be. The man may be half black but he grew up with a white mother. He's not going to be mr. pro black liberation. If he was, he wouldn't have gotten this far. They always hate on him for something petty like not coming to their little conference a while back because he was campaigning. We can see through that.

  • smh @ these 3 coons. just give the man the respect he deserves with his speech and the nomination. house niggas always trynna take away from another brotha's success

  • Cornell thinks he can speak for all black ppl because he has a PhD...fuck that nigga!

  • WTF? Barrack speech was great! i know a couple of haters when i see them

  • omg....see this is the problem..i love cornell west...and being a white "arab" american, i found nothing wrong with obama's speech, it was polished and balanced.....why does it seem that these 2 want to make this a racial issue?....i think every american with a brain knew that moment, was a historic moment and did not need a reaffirmation of this via a katrina and every detail regarding Dr. Martin Luther King.

  • I got caught up into all this hype about Barack being an African American, and making history. So naturally I expected Barack to acknowledge the progression of blacks in his speech. I am not shocked at the comments I have witness from blacks on this video because they are known for getting played.

  • dat dr.west need to run a comb thru his hid...

  • As a fellow African American, I'm extremely dissapointed in Malveaux and West. No surprise in Tavis...but i've had nothing but the utmost respect for these two. Its very sad that they cant wrap their brains around the idea that Its not all about us...its about the Nation. If Obama ran around shouting black this...black that...African American this...African American that, then he wouldnt be where he is. Jackson and Sharpton tried it and fell by the wayside. Obama got the message.

  • All three are haters...Julianne, a loser president from some unknown school. And if Cornell is so pro-Black why is he still teaching at an ivy league school...c'mon brother there are many HBCU's you could teach at. Tavis is wack and so is his sorry ass show nobody watches.

  • also jesse jackson didn't pass a damn thing to barack obama. he's a hater as well. we heard what he really felt about barack obama. to say that jesse jackson pass the torch to barack obama is just as ignorant to insinuate that barack did himself a disservice by not saying "dr. martin luther king". tell me what jesse jackson passed to barack. this isn't saying what he did didn't influence barack. it influence most black people. but she making it seem like barack owes him something.

  • barack did speak about katrina and poverty. He just cannot devote his entire speech to it. and to say he demeaned dr. king by not saying his name is nothing short of ridiculous. how many times have people, preachers and the like use the phrase "the man upstairs" or something similar. you know exactly who we are talking about. and when barack said that preacher from georgia we knew exactly who he was talking about and we know it was meant with the utmost respect and honor.

  • HE spoke for 40+ min. More than a line could have been devoted. Katrina points to so many things politcally, especially in underlining the failure of the current administration. Oboma missed the moment. He didn't seize it fully. He hit a single...& that's kool it keeps the gme going...but he could have kncked that bitch out of the stadium...

  • Jafarmartin I couldn't agree more with all of your statements. The thing thats crazy to me is that Dr. West, Smiley and Malveaux have dedicated their lives to the liberation of black people and now of all sudden you get one new guy who can possibly win big and they will feed the established leaders to the dogs. It represents blacks over emotional attitude toward politics. The critical thinker would be able to analyze both sides. But clearly many of us don't have that indepth perspective.

  • Your so called established leaders are weak. They appear jealous, vindictive and petty. Like not being asked to go to a party, they start dogging the party. The man is the best candidate for America. He has the class that most black leaders lack. Beating us over the head with the continuous black issue is dangerous in the sense some will use it as an excuse.

  • You make all somewhat true points. But what is equally dangerous is blindly supporting a new candidate who has repeatedly ran from properly confronting the race issue but is being allowed a pass, to use the civil rights legacy unchecked, as a ticket to be come president. 1. Making white america feel comfortable that racism no longer exist and 2 watering down the need and responsibility amongst black americans about our accountability to one another for empowerment purposes.

  • This is saddening to see two prominent black people, for a lack of a better word, HATING. It is so difficult to understand how two EXTREMELY intelligent people can realize that baracks speech was not a civil right speech, not an endorsement, but a political speech. It was a political speech in which if he didn't deliver it in the manner, context and rhetoric that he did, he could have lost important ground in this political. barack can't afford to be or say anything controversial in any way.

  • MLK's speech wasn't about controversy. It was about challenging our country to live up to it's vision. It was 18 min long start to finish. Barack spoke for 40+ min. If they can use the date of the anniversary of that speech for political weight then he can talk a bit about it's significance & how it relates to how for we've progressed to reach this moment. He wouldn't have lost ground. It would have dovetailed w/ the speech & vision he laid in 2004. It was a good safe speech & culd hav been more

  • Tavis if you want to run for president so bad run. But please stop hating!

  • Man they both sound loony! He mentioned Katrina, he mentioned plenty about families who are slipping into poverty because of the Bush administration, and he didn't have to ride Dr King because his message isn't just about us black poeple, it's about all us americans as a whole. At least he slipped King in at the end! And why in the world would he be talking about white supremacy in his acceptance speech? That's just stupid...

  • Barack being there is history in and of itself. Not to say that the precedents should be ignored. But I'm sure Barack had a firm understanding of the history he was making and the people that came before him to make that event possible. Besides if those who died did what they did for RECOGNITION then they did for the wrong reasons.

  • I'm sorry but, all those people who "sacrificed" and fought the good fight that laid the foundation for Barack to recieve the nomination aren't here. So who are these two Doctors to say how those who died would feel?

  • So sorry Drs. Malveaux and West, some African Americans are very proud of Barack Obama, his speech and his actions during this whole process. He did not ignore history, he is out making history. I did not have to cry during his speech, like funerals in my home state of Louisiana...we cry at first, but then we celebrate. There was no need to cry, Barack's acceptance speech was good for all Americans and served a serious blow to the head of racism and discrimination world wide. He did well!

  • Crabs in a barrel.

  • People need to stop hating on Barack. He got this far without "selling out". He didn't pander to negroes, nor did he pander to while folks.

All he did was be himself...more people, specially black people, could learn from him. Learn to be yourself no matter who is around you.

  • Tavis, I think you are awesome but please dont think we see your intentions! We all may not have the clout or education that you have but we are by no means stupid to see the intent behind your comments or your questions! You don't have do love Barak but just be honest about where you Stand.

  • The whole 3 to 4 hours before Barak Came out was about Marting Luther King! Two of his children came out to speak! John Lewis Spoke about the significane of the day and they showed an awesome video on Martin! Barak spoke about the issues that he was being attacked for and the 3 to 4 hours before he came out was the tribute to King! And yes he did say something about katrina!! Im all about Accountability but I don't understand this! He's not running for president of Black America!!

  • Um, he totally mentioned Katrina. Something like "When one of our greatest cities is drowning".

I don't see why it would have to be by name unless they're suggesting people won't know exactly damn well what he means by a city drowning. The hell did they think he meant, Venice??

  • These two people are talking trash. What, you want Obama to bring in Black and White in his acceptance speech???? Black people need to chill out for a second and stop making every little thing an issue. The dude is the dem nominee already!

  • Its not black people, its these two idiots.

  • lol fair enough

  • Tavis, wonderful interview. However, "have this brother hit one out of the park?" Give me a break; no, have this "man" or "American" delivered a phenomenal speech. Please, honorable doctors, understand that this speech was not aimed at the African American intelligentsia, it was aimed at the American people as a whole: white, black, brown, etc. Your complaints are may be valid, but they are an example of cutting off the nose to spite the face. He didn't run from history; just made it.

  • He did run frm history...They weren't speaking from the perspective of intellectual elites. They were speaking as AA who have sjared in the journey of progression. I am a young guy & I don't agree w/ hatin ass old school civil righter's but I also don't ask them to forget about & just abandon their own experiences as well. They wanted to be acknowledged as having been apart of the culmination of wut dr king inspired us w/ 45 yrs ago as well. They were speaking 4 all who lived thru past turmoil.

  • All you old Activist need to try to advance, stop hating on the new guy because he does what you can't.

  • Exactly

  • first of all we know that tavis and ms malveaux are clinton supporters. he is the same person that invited a white woman to the BLACK STATE OF THE UNION!!! now to ms malveaux, because barack did not tie in his candidacy to the dream of dr king somehow he dropped the ball? barack is running for president of the united states of america not the south side of chicago only. dr king was a preacher, barack did not say he was just that, but he put the 2 events together to make a point.you just missed it

  • I guess people want to appear more intelligent and independent if you criticize Obama, thus not appearing as mindless followers.

......even if the criticisms are ridiculous.

  • its sad how malveaux say something like that about obama and i guess she was not watching the DNC that day or i could of sworen they had a whole segment about Dr.king and obama did mention him but again black people always hate on each other anyways its cool and by the way obama is not running for black president of america he is running for the president of the united states of america and if you really feel that way then vote for mccain and keep it moving.

  • To Mrs. Malveaux, I would say that if you feel the need to add negative commentary on Obama at this point in the election, In the face of achieving something so important for us and our children, you either don't want this progress, don't understand polotics needed to achieve it, or your arrogance is beyond measure. I believe it is the latter, so please for all of us who need this to happen to improve our lives for generations, please wait until he's elected then run your mouth. Pompous jerk!

  • I thought his speech was to accept the DNC nomination! Therefore, he needed to speak to what he will do as Prez. Not a homage to a particular historical day. Also, Dr. King dream is realized. Barack Obama will be the next Prez of USA. Sometimes my people are too educated to see the obvious!

  • EXACTLY. The lady, and Tavis ESPECIALLY are nothing but former hillary supporters who won't let her go.

  • That's the point. If the dream is realized & u r going to make a play off of the anniversary of the date.wouldn't it be inspiring & progressive to illustrate the strides & movements forward from past to present.& then lay out a new vision & be bold laying out a new & evolved vision. It only makes sense. He would have inspired the world w/ that kind of speech. marketing 101: there is no such thing as obvious for a customer. He's selling himself & ideas 2 the public.

  • this lady is nothing but bitter. what does anyone gain by her saying that type of stuff besides the opposition?? if anything, obama acknowledges how influential dr king was because he knew that everybody at the dnc and everybody watching knew for sure who he was talking about. there's no reason for this

  • The hater Tavis Smiley deliberately chose people whom he knew would be critical of Obama. Obama did not want to co-opt Dr. Kings speech. He did not want to make any pretensions of being Dr. King. He wanted to make a speech that would stand and fall on its own merit. It is super hypocritical of these people to be condemning Obama for not acknowledging black people while at the same time they couldn't can't resist gushing about their love and loyalty to the Clintons. We know your TavishaterSmiley!
