  • I've been living with this song for a couple days. I've been listening to the song for 20 years or so, but never tried playing it. Until now. Thanks!

  • Great lesson thanks for posting this, it was a great help.

  • Damn.. I never heard you sing this much!! That was awesome!! Thanks alot!

  • thank you because you show the cords !

  • huge help.. the little details add that professional touch...thanks a lot !!

  • @sedindustries This was done in standard tuning. But play it however you feel like it.

  • @privettricker The "no capo" is just by choice for now. I'm relatively new and learning, standard tuning it is ;)

  • @sedindustries Well, if you're playing along with a singer, you'll probably end up moving the capo around to suit his/her voice...or removing the capo altogether, which Keith did to suit Mick's voice in concert.

  • @privettricker Probably so! ; )

There seems to be a little confusion here (in the comments) about Keith's live tuning verses possibly his studio tuning, Yours is FINE and I'm on it ; )

    Thanks

  • Awesome video! You've nailed Keith Richards version tab wise!!!

I'm trying it with standard tuning and without the Capo and it sounds decent.

    Thanks again

  • @sedindustries That's how Keith did the live versions back in the 69/72 period. Not sure what he's done since.

  • I was looking forward to learning from your video - got home and started and sure as heck you are not in standard tuning and I read some comments below where you mocked someone who told you the very same thing. Please don't even respond or argue with me- it's not standard tuning you are in. A shame because you have nailed it in whatever tuning . Peace.

  • @ESonic11 Do you know where the info box is on YouTube videos? Also, do you know the difference between standard tuning and standard pitch? I'm not arguing with you. Those are legit questions.

  • Nicely taught. Thanks!

  • thanks for EVERYTHING - Loving this one...

  • I really like this dude's channel! I've learned so many songs from him that I'm having trouble putting down the guitar..... but now I have to go out ..... with the wife..... but I would rather get this chord sequence down .... then get my open G tele and crank out some exile tunes ... and eat a pizza ........ but i cant ...... its new years and she'll leave me if I dont go out ...... but I'll still have my guitars .... unless she gets them in the settlement ... better go out.

  • Thank you for another great lesson. You've got some beautiful guitars.

  • A great lesson on one of the all time great blues songs. My favorite Stones tune. Great job. Many thanks.

  • Very good explanation. Even the idiots who don't like your tutorial should be able to play it now.

    Thanks!

  • Ok, we know he has a beard...

  • Ok, we know he has a beard...

  • The fact alone that you took the time to post this is GREAT...the people that don't like it toooooo bad. They can go pay for the same lesson.Oh yes I forgot to say they can kiss my hairy ass.Good job.Thanks.Peace

  • Amazing, great explanation!

  • what tuning are YOU in?!?!?!

  • @SEBB3RS Is this a joke?

  • @privettricker

no sir i've got my tuner here i'm in standard capo 3, not the same?!

  • @SEBB3RS If you don't understand the first 20 seconds of this video, you should probably turn off the computer and sit down with your guitar for a little while longer before trying to learn from YouTube demos.

  • @privettricker

you're not in the right pitch for standard tuning capo 3, i got that at 22 seconds, cheers. Pretty good vid, you're not quite 100% but good effort.

  • @SEBB3RS probably you set a different frequency on your tuner, it's definitely not standard tuning.

  • @privettricker "..and it'll come to you pretty quickly." - I've been trying for 8 months and it still sounds like I'm kicking the dustbin! It's the first C with the hammer on the D and G - I just cannot get it to "flow". But I'll get there one day (?)

Thanks for the lesson - it's great.

  • Perfect Lesson ... Thank you ... definitely not "too much explanation." You are an excellent teacher. Great song. I really enjoyed learning this song from you.

  • Perfect Lesson ... Thank you ... definitely not "too much explanation." You are an excellent teacher. Great song.

  • He is the best teacher.

    Thank you very very much!!!

    I always studied from you!

  • fab lesson !

  • unfortunetely too much explanation....just for several barr....!

  • @boeyoengznova You mean, too much explanation FOR YOU. But this isn't your channel, it's mine. A lot of people ask me for detailed explanations. And I have no idea what "just for several barr" means.

  • well, it's brilliant, a near perfect lesson and it's almost disgusting for me to find any fault. it's just that linking these perfectly instructed chord formations together, to actually know where you are in the song, is impossible for a beginner. I lose understanding at 4:23. That's where we leave continuity and place cannot be found in the lyrics. Such as, "Followed her to the station", but then, "With two lights on behind", from another part of the lyrics. Is it possible to see it all played?

  • @realsecman Yes, it's possible to see it all played. Check my channel for a full demo.

  • why do I always find myself watching your videos when my guitar is in the other room and its 11:00 at night? like 75% of my favorites are your videos that I have to watch later

  • Thank you so much man. Great amount of respect for you from england!!

  • Thanks very much for putting together this terrific lesson.

  • excellent job. having just finished reading Life, I'm fascinated by Keith's technique. this has been a favorite for decades.

  • Thanks + Thanks + Thanks !!

  • thanks for shining a light on my favorite Stones song. any chance you can do a lesson on the slide part?

  • My favorite of the many of your lessons that I've studied so far. Thank you so much--you really illuminated this song for me!

  • You gotta know that i'm really impressed with all you covers, i'm really thankful that you just uploaded this lesson, i used to play a little different version of love in vain, a version which comes in a french magazine that i downloaded in pdf, that version is cool, but yours is just superb, thank you.

  • great lesson, man I have wanted to know how to play this for years. You are teaching me that these songs are not as hard as I thought, just a little practice...

  • @MagicMaui1 I usually play this song starting with these chords: G , C, G, G7 D ..

  • Great tutorial having included the the descending bass notes and subtle slide and hammer on techniques. Keep tutoring....

  • Great flippin lesson, btw! All those subtle nuances are the key to Keith's playing.

  • The other amazing live off the floor studio version is off Stripped. IMHO, the best version too.

  • Thanks privettricker for your lessons. I improved my skills watching your videos. Any plans for stones's "sweet virginia" lesson.

  • well done, thanks! great lesson!

been wanting to play this one for years!

  • Brilliant song and brilliant lesson. Dove seems to really capture the feel the sound.

  • I prefer the version in G, but I wanna learn this nice one, too. Thanks

  • @FriendlyDD Keith does them very similar, except for the capo.

  • @FriendlyDD How do you play this in G ? Can you get me started ?

  • @MagicMaui1 It's already played with a G fingering. It just uses a capo up to the neighborhood of B flat. I don't know what he's done post-1972, but Keith used to play it just like this onstage without the capo.

  • @privettricker So ... Let me try to understand it ... open G tuning ... Same fingering as what you are doing in this tutorial

  • @MagicMaui1 It's fingered as if it were the key of G, but not open G. You could play it in an open tuning, but it would require a lot of rearrangement. The little licks would be a lot tougher to do, and most of them wouldn't sound right.

  • @privettricker Thanks for your patience ... I'm gonna think it true ... I don't understand that whole key thing ... But hell I can pick, strumm and mute some pretty nice chords ... lol ...

  • @MagicMaui1 Think of it this way: Suppose you capo at the 2nd fret, and then you play a regular G chord. That's now in the key of A because of the capo. But you're still fingering a G chord. Like Yesterday: Paul tuned down two steps, and he starts with a G chord -- but the song is still in the key of F because he tuned down. Even with open tunings, that remains the same. Keith tuned to open G for Tumbling Dice, but the song is the key of C (with the capo).

  • @privettricker Tuning down 2 half steps makes it an Open D ... Playing the G on that tuning ... makes it an F ... I guess I understand it...

  • @MagicMaui1 Tuning down 2 steps only makes it an open D if you started in open E. Tuning down 2 steps from EADGBE wouldn't be an open D. It would be a D7#9sus4 instead of an E7#9sus4.

    Does that make sense?

  • Hi and thanks for all your video that are really helpful.

Love in vain is one my favorite songs and now that i'm reading Keith's autobiography I'm really happy to have the chance to play his songs.

Is my tuner that isn't working or is your guitar out of tune? it seems one semitone up.

By the way, I've noticed you have a lot of wonderful guitars, why don't you put the model you are playing on the notes? is this one a gibson hummingbird?

  • @otregano I tried to explain in the video that I didn't compare my tuning to how they're tuned on the album. So you probably can't play along with my lesson and then immediately play along with the Let it Bleed recording without re-tuning. I guess I didn't really communicate that very well. In other words, I'm not sure if I'm a semi-tone up or down from the album recording. Adjust your capo accordingly.

  • @privettricker You probably explained well, the fact is that my english is too poor.

Thanks again for your great videos :-)

Thanks again for your great videos :-)

PS. Do you think that sooner or later you'll be able to post also the slide part of sister morphine. It drive me crazy because I can't make it

  • Thank you for the lesson, it is a great help.

    Hope you will carry on.

    Many thanks.

    Francis.
