In Cesar Franck quella che pare una specie di vena malinconica, in realtà poi sublima in atmosfere arcane e contemplative. Strano che, all'inizio della sua carriera di compositore, aveva scritto opere pianistiche in stile virtuosistico, di un romanticismo molto singolare. In questo Preludio, Rubinstein fa emergere un tono idilliaco e meditativo, invece che malinconico e crepuscolare, e lo fa con intima e profonda intensità espressiva.
