What a pleasure to watch the master himself conduct. I hope my Dad in heaven is able to watch through my eyes. Thank you, You Tube.
Incredible. 2nd Flute/Piccolo botches a note (plays C-sharp instead of C-natural) at 16:36. Gets nervous, picks up his flute, realizes he doesn't need to switch to it, picks back up the piccolo. So beautiful that the camera stays on him. Nothing like missing a note in an exposed solo when the composer is conducting- especially when it's STRAVINSKY! This video is a wonderful piece of history, thanks for posting. And, if I may, I do believe all his tempos are- well, his tempos.
One of the most important orchestral works ever written.....the way paved for all those who once may have been affraid to show their true voice....I.S. suffered the slings and arrows associated with musique 'actuelle (my term...not so original tho')......my god!!!....here's why we need more music education in the schools.....I'm afraid in the years to come ...we are not going to have enough young musicians to play this genre...FB Suite takes 118 musicians ...at least we'll have it on YT...bravo!
@BlutoUSN 'I do not like the reappearance of The Jesuits ... If ever there was a body of men who merited damnation on earth and in hell, it is this society of Loyola's. Nevertheless, we are compelled by our system of religous toleration to offer them an asylum.' John Adams, 2nd President of the U.S.A
@BlutoUSN This passage is from The Companions of Jehu--page 396--"You are ninnies! I have cheated all the time we've been playing, and you never found out. Those who lost can take their money back." Born and bred in the Catholic faith, Bonaparte had no preference for any dogma. When he re-established divine worship it was done as a political act, not as a religous one.
I was astonished to discover this is not the complete ballet, but the 1945 suite, which I have never heard! Still a lot missing from the complete, but some fascinating orchestration changes and transitions. Thanks!

I recall one of my music teachers commenting that Stravinsky, as a conductor, did not do justice to his own works. I have found that true in most cases as I have more thoroughly enjoyed hearing Stavinsky's works performanced by other conductors.
@PENNSY671E The trouble with some music teachers is their mistaken perception they hold the keys to the kingdom for what defines musical expression —The fact of the matter is; all the expressive commands in music scores are merely guide-posts —gray areas, subjective to interpretation —We all bring something unique to the Life experience and, in the end, people will, simply, respond, or not, to what is put out there —The wonder of music is it's the ultimate cause 'n effect playground...
This is music. This peice will not ever dwindel into the night. This will be somthing that continues to inspire. This will be around long after all the hip- hop and pop crap disapates. This is true music at its best. Bravo, bravo.
@mendozairis It happens alot in orchestra, because this is what true music is, and most classical musicians like Igor Stravinsky have such vision that they can inspire a crowd of people.
it always amazes me that japanese musicians, here the NHK, adapt to playing western music with ease and confidence, what I mean is they went to the proper conservatories and all but as children their parent listened to the ancient japanese masters....
My God I love Stravinsky. However, he takes this piece a little faster than he should have, I think. That seems to be a pattern with anyone who directs Stravinsky's stuff. This was why I liked Fantasia's versions of Rite of Spring and Firebird, they were slow enough that the listener could appreciate the mastery of the composing.
@cajunstix hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! Shit that was funny. I would give bieber and miley for a bag of peanut butter cups! :) I am only speculating when I say this, but we must be in for a real good one here soon, concidering the last 30 years (I've only been around for 23 of them)!
Yeah...it's like asking to a pastry chief to trade a delicious, tasty, enormous norvegian cake with extra chocolate and and fruits in exchange of...two dusty old cheetos puffs.
Let say please, composers, let down your stupid background synthetic music or futur-contemporain shit and return ont the emotionnal picturing ''quilt'' music
What I am about to say is probably heresy, so if you want to kill me I would understand but the part at 3:18 I heard how a different conductor played it. I don't remember his name. He played it slower and you really get the feeling like there are a swarm of birds flying around ready to fly at you and puncture you like a bunch of extremely sharp needles. I would always rewind to that part to hear it again and again
Do you know if this is sped up at all because of the limitations of the film? I don't think there are any above-half-step changes to the pitch in this recording.
Gossip from a member of the Hamburg Philharmonic orchestra: Stravinsky once conducted this in Hamburg and was never content with the musicians and always criticized them. Finally one of them is reported to have said: "if you go on criticizing us like this we will start playing as you conduct".
I can`t explain the happines, and extremely intensity this music makes me feel... I´m just diving into it... Stravinsky IS the XXI Century COMPOSRER... There is no doubt about it!... @meneltar What a shame all videos can't be of complete pieces of music without all of the annoying interruptions. It's the one thing that I really hate about YouTube. And another annoying thing is how slowly most videos load. They sputter and stall and it really can spoil a performance of classical music. Can anything be done about that? Geez, this is the 21st Century !! Can't we do better?
@meneltar Probably YT could let you if you e-mailed them explaining your situation, justifying the reasons why it would be legitime from you to post an over 10min film.
@meneltar There are actually Youtube Partnerships now where if you have popular enough videos, youtube will pay you and you can post videos as long as you want. You can also put special pictures as the thumbnail for the video
I do wonder if this can be considered a definitive reading of the piece, considering not only that this performance is nearly 50 years after it was written, but by an orchestra for whom there was clearly some struggling. It appears to me as though Maestro Stravinsky is keeping the tempi fairly flat, almost in a "this is the best I can do under the circumstances" mode.
i find it hard to listen to stravinsky so much since I'm more of a Mahler fan. This one is a lot easier to comprehend than Rite of Spring. That piece still befuddles me every time.
too bad the audio is prehistoric. But the sight of him up on the podium is priceless. At the premier of 'firebird' Richard Strauss, who was with the audience, was so impressed and dumbfounded at the sliding strings at 1:53. Just demonstrates what a genius Stravinsky is.
It's good to hear Stravinsky conduct to hear it exactly as he wanted, a lot of the phrases make much more sense in this one than from other recordings from other conductors where they sound muddled and rhythmically unsure. anyone know if there's a video of Stravinsky conducting a full version of The Sacre?
@sitric9 Actually, they said Stravinsky wasn't a great conductor. In fact, during the recording of 'Rite of Spring', he completely lost the pacing of the piece and the orchestra went on playing without him!
There is a video on here where a living member of that very orchestra tells the whole story. Pretty funny, actually.

By "Firebird COMPLETE" I mean it's not just an excerpt, but actually the whole thing - the 1919(or 1945?) Suite. The other videos of this performance here in youtube are just excerpts. My chanel philosophy is to post only complete videos.
I see. The title is misleading as it suggests a performance of the complete ballet - something I've yet to hear Stravinsky conduct.
BTW, this is the 1945 version. You can tell by the scoring, particularly the wedding-ceremony finale. And AFAIK this was the only version Stravinsky conducted in the 1960s.
@sirlollo American TV doesn't show this kind of stuff much anymore either. They fill PBS with "viewer requests" during fundraising, and of course, viewers never request classical music (unless it's sung by Andrea Bocelli).
And just to reply to someone's previous comment. - The Rite of Spring was considered virtually unplayable during this time, as it was thought as controversial, unfortunatley :(
Thank you so much... This is my favorite piece of classical music.

I wish we had these in college. In 1988 the internet was something that the professors were just getting to use to type notes back and forth.

thanks ...... its not to often when we see a composer conducting his own work

too bad the audio is prehistoric. But the sight of him up on the podium is priceless. At the premier of 'firebird' Richard Strauss, who was with the audience, was so impressed and dumbfounded at the sliding strings at 1:53. Just demonstrates what a genius Stravinsky is.

I couldn't vote 1000 stars, so I settled for 5. This is a remarkable piece of music history.

I love Stravinsky. His work is so brilliant, and the risks he takes are that of a composer so skilled that they end up not really being risks at all.

The beginning is good,
But from about 12:00 on it's one of the best pieces of music ever written!!

It's good to hear Stravinsky conduct to hear it exactly as he wanted, a lot of the phrases make much more sense in this one than from other recordings from other conductors where they sound muddled and rhythmically unsure. anyone know if there's a video of Stravinsky conducting a full version of The Sacre?
sitric9 2 years ago 9
There is, but I really can't find it!

@meneltar What about a version of him conducting The rite of Spring?
udistritalextrema 1 year ago
@udistritalextrema I wish I had it. Do you know anything about it?
meneltar 1 year ago
@meneltar Not a footage of Stravinsky conducting it, but one of the ballet. Probably you have watched it already

The start of the finale, at about 25:27, is my favourite piece of music ever. It's just so pretty! I wish I could play the horn like that.
maureencsw 2 years ago 3
agreed. one of my favs as well.
MrJoshmt90 2 years ago
A nice historical document here. However, this is not "Firebird COMPLETE". This is just a later suite - probably the most recent one: 1945.
ProTwoAm 2 years ago 3
By "Firebird COMPLETE" I mean it's not just an excerpt, but actually the whole thing - the 1919(or 1945?) Suite. The other videos of this performance here in youtube are just excerpts. My chanel philosophy is to post only complete videos.
Thanks!
pedrobesteiras 2 years ago 4
ProTwoAm 2 years ago
Well, you can hear it, at least. He conducted the complete ballet in the 1960 Columbia recording, long available on cd from Sony.
ShirtlessCountryBoyT 2 years ago
This is mesmerizing. I just found myself bobbing my head along with his hands somewhere around 24:20.

Why the italian television does not shows these beautiful stuff??
Why have we to watch only big brother and other garbage?
sirlollo 2 years ago 39
@sirlollo American TV doesn't show this kind of stuff much anymore either. They fill PBS with "viewer requests" during fundraising, and of course, viewers never request classical music (unless it's sung by Andrea Bocelli).

This is beautiful!
And just to reply to someone's previous comment. - The Rite of Spring was considered virtually unplayable during this time, as it was thought as controversial, unfortunatley :(
AnishProductions 2 years ago 2
Of course, but it was played. It remains very difficult until nowadays.

especially the 2nd tuba part!!! I'll be performing it with my orchestra this Saturday night :)
