  • Thank you so much... This is my favorite piece of classical music.

  • this piece is one of my absolute favorites. the ending just makes me so damn happy

  • Great vid thanks for posting it...

    Great piece of music

Great composition by a great artist

  • All music is good, music itself is the only thing worthwhile humanity has achieved. Shut up. You sound like children. Everyone on Youtube sounds like a stupid child. Just enjoy the music.

  • It's a shame that the audio quality is so poor, this is the best version of this that I have heard!! The end gives me shivers.

  • @DarkKumquat I enjoy my version with Simon Rattle a lot.

  • unique definition with a word : sublime!

  • favorite part - 17:12

  • When you listen to modern interpretation of this fantastic music, it lacks the spirit and the drama of this original interpretation. Stravinsky was right to conduct his own works. What a testimony to his music! Thank for the video.

  • @frank3805: gosh, what a silly comment. all modern interpretations are crap??

  • For the first time I listen to this piece conducted by the composer himself. Wonderful! Thanks for posting.

  • Title is misleading: this is not the complete "Firebird", but the 1945 Suite

  • How sublime...I'm currently visiting Yokosuka, Japan and I find this. A perfect day with a perfect soundtrack.

  • you can see the man's aura...

  • is it the 1911, 1919 or 1945 suite?

  • does anybody know what version is this? is it the full 7 numbers or just the first 5? (sorry my english, i'm from argentina)

  • @timmer7000 dude...that is pretty cool. Started looking for those halos and they are there.

This man was amazing. Words to explain such as this definitely miss the mark.

  • Igor, you have influenced and initiated all that great, awesome, romantic symfonic masterpieces that came after you!

    Thank you for that!

  • Amazing!! It's so rare to see the creator conducting his own piece. Awesome!!

  • I keep listening to 6:54-7:40 over and over. Sublime. Always loved this suite.

  • Perfect!

  • Amen to trading Beiber, Smiley Virus, lady gargoyle, and any two dozen rap artists. Even that would be like trading the bad news bears for Sandy Koufax or Willie Mays.

  • I'am glad to see this VDO Clip Clap Clap Clap

  • Saturday fever.....

  • My father, Don Lorusso, was a musician and introduced me to Stravinsky and The Firebird Suite when I was a young girl. At that point we could only listen to it on the 'stereo'. What a pleasure to watch the master himself conduct. I hope my Dad in heaven is able to watch through my eyes. Thank you, You Tube.

  • Incredible. 2nd Flute/Piccolo botches a note (plays C-sharp instead of C-natural) at 16:36. Gets nervous, picks up his flute, realizes he doesn't need to switch to it, picks back up the piccolo. So beautiful that the camera stays on him. Nothing like missing a note in an exposed solo when the composer is conducting- especially when it's STRAVINSKY! This video is a wonderful piece of history, thanks for posting. And, if I may, I do believe all his tempos are- well, his tempos.

  • @seventythreekey Poor guy! At least the difference of one semitone didn't really mangle the concept in this instance.

  • One of the most important orchestral works ever written.....the way paved for all those who once may have been affraid to show their true voice....I.S. suffered the slings and arrows associated with musique 'actuelle (my term...not so original tho')......my god!!!....here's why we need more music education in the schools.....I'm afraid in the years to come ...we are not going to have enough young musicians to play this genre...FB Suite takes 118 musicians ...at least we'll have it on YT...bravo!

  • i just...cant stop crying D:

  • @ezteliita

I find tears streaming down my cheeks every time I watch his curtain calls. The man and his music are a true gift from the Gods...

  • amazing! wich orchestra is this one?? i mean, from where?

    Cheers from Mexico!

  • Thank you for posting this! Please post some more!

  • @unemployedcomposer Old comment, but moonlight is actually 2/2 ^^

  • realmente es un gran compositor. que bueno que el mismo Stravinsky vivio y disfruto su música.

  • LOL, THEY"RE ALL ASIANS! THE ONLY ONES WHO CAN WORK HARD TO LEARN THIS MUSIC.

  • @hellomottogotto That is not true. Asians are not the only ones that work hard. That's a very bias thing to say.

  • I was astonished to discover this is not the complete ballet, but the 1945 suite, which I have never heard! Still a lot missing from the complete, but some fascinating orchestration changes and transitions. Thanks!

  • 17:11- Infernal Danse

    21:15- Berceuse

i'll edit later when i have time to go through sections

  • Igor, as always, bringin' it in a big way —Ass-kickingly gorgeous and Life-Affirmingly beautiful...

  • Maravilhoso, que felicidade ter a oportunidade de ver o próprio stravinsky conduzindo seu lindo pássaro de fogo!

  • Does anyone know when this was recorded?

  • o my god. even though the quality is not really good, the beginning is the best i've EVER heard. it really gives me creeps. the WHOLE of my body have goosebumps

  • I recall one of my music teachers commenting that Stravinsky, as a conductor, did not do justice to his own works. I have found that true in most cases as I have more thoroughly enjoyed hearing Stavinsky's works performanced by other conductors.

  • @PENNSY671E The trouble with some music teachers is their mistaken perception they hold the keys to the kingdom for what defines musical expression —The fact of the matter is; all the expressive commands in music scores are merely guide-posts —gray areas, subjective to interpretation —We all bring something unique to the Life experience and, in the end, people will, simply, respond, or not, to what is put out there —The wonder of music is it's the ultimate cause 'n effect playground...

  • AMAZING :D

  • MASTERPIECE

  • esse tipo de som conheço como música

  • Stravinsky said that nobody ever conducted this better than WILLEM MENGELBERG. What a pity that there is no recording... :(

  • The sound of the orchestra is incredible!!! this is FIREBIRD!!!!

  • At this angle, it sorta looks like the bassoonist is resting his instrument on the back of the oboists head, LOL!!

  • The Master Himself !

  • Actually...how many times did Stravinsky came to the stage after the performance???

  • Stravinsky wasn't that great a conductor...But his music is phenomenal :]

  • Just THANK YOU and one question:

the event, date and place of this video and the orchestra?

  • @ellesmithfagan It says in this video " May1, 1959 at Osaka Festival Hall." 3:25 The Orchestra is NHK Symphony Orchestra.

  • @sanchaofgo Thank you ! Happy New Year!

  • Extraordinaire et précieux document !!!

    Merci pour le post .

  • This is music. This peice will not ever dwindel into the night. This will be somthing that continues to inspire. This will be around long after all the hip- hop and pop crap disapates. This is true music at its best. Bravo, bravo.

  • @STRAVOLTY You speak words of wisdom my friend! Classical music will never die. Period.

  • That's almost 3 minutes of applause. But he deserves every second of it.

  • @mendozairis It happens alot in orchestra, because this is what true music is, and most classical musicians like Igor Stravinsky have such vision that they can inspire a crowd of people.

  • it always amazes me that japanese musicians, here the NHK, adapt to playing western music with ease and confidence, what I mean is they went to the proper conservatories and all but as children their parent listened to the ancient japanese masters....

  • fantastivc IGOR

  • hardcore!!!

  • you're the best!

  • what is the name of the part at 9:48?

  • What a legend. I would have given everything to have him conduct our orchestra if he were still alive.

  • This is fantastic!!! I love YouTube. Thank you for posting this gem of a video.

(check out my own orchestral music at my channel)

  • Thanks so much for that!!!

    My favourite one!!

  • Fantastic, simply fantastic, thanks a lot for share this beautiful vid meneltar, thank you very much!

  • My God I love Stravinsky. However, he takes this piece a little faster than he should have, I think. That seems to be a pattern with anyone who directs Stravinsky's stuff. This was why I liked Fantasia's versions of Rite of Spring and Firebird, they were slow enough that the listener could appreciate the mastery of the composing.

  • I loved playing this!!! I keep sitting in orchestra, thinking I wish it was last year and we we could be playing the Firebird!!!

  • Thumbs up if u see a smiling auntie when u pull the button to the most left

  • I want to be a conductor now!

  • I want to see him conducting the "Dance of the Earth" and the "Sacrificial Dance". These excerpts are so awesome!

  • Remarkable upload!!! Thank you so much!!!

  • cool!

  • please god, give us back stravinsky, we will give you bieber and miley in return.

  • @cajunstix I'm stealing that and putting it on facebook!!! :D

  • @cajunstix best comment ever

  • @cajunstix God would never fall for such a terrible bargain

  • @cajunstix i don't think that'd be a fair exchange

  • @cajunstix hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! Shit that was funny. I would give bieber and miley for a bag of peanut butter cups! :) I am only speculating when I say this, but we must be in for a real good one here soon, concidering the last 30 years (I've only been around for 23 of them)!

  • @cajunstix

Who cares. Also, if any old composers were brought back to life, I don't think they would enjoy our current society very much anyways :P

  • @cajunstix One of the best comments ever!!

  • @cajunstix

Yeah...it's like asking to a pastry chief to trade a delicious, tasty, enormous norvegian cake with extra chocolate and and fruits in exchange of...two dusty old cheetos puffs.

Let say please, composers, let down your stupid background synthetic music or futur-contemporain shit and return ont the emotionnal picturing ''quilt'' music

  • @cajunstix just bieber and miley... that's not enough

  • @cajunstix Actually can we get Theodore Roosevelt back to so the US doesn't drag down the whole world with it?

  • @cajunstix youre not reaching to even one theen of the price...

  • What's the name of the section @ 17:15. We are playing in in band

  • @greekgeek618 danse infernale / infernal dance. amazing part!

  • I have an old Masterworks recording of him directing this, and Rite of Spring. I had never seen him directing it until this. Wonderful!

  • The flutist is first class!

  • clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap clap

  • What I am about to say is probably heresy, so if you want to kill me I would understand but the part at 3:18 I heard how a different conductor played it. I don't remember his name. He played it slower and you really get the feeling like there are a swarm of birds flying around ready to fly at you and puncture you like a bunch of extremely sharp needles. I would always rewind to that part to hear it again and again

  • Do you know if this is sped up at all because of the limitations of the film? I don't think there are any above-half-step changes to the pitch in this recording.

  • Gossip from a member of the Hamburg Philharmonic orchestra: Stravinsky once conducted this in Hamburg and was never content with the musicians and always criticized them. Finally one of them is reported to have said: "if you go on criticizing us like this we will start playing as you conduct".

  • stravinsky's a lot more tinier/frail than i thought he would be O.o

  • I can`t explain the happines, and extremely intensity this music makes me feel... I´m just diving into it... Stravinsky IS the XXI Century COMPOSRER... There is no doubt about it!... I'm from Argentinian percussionist and I´m studying hte Timpani parts from The Rite of Spring... As well i have already finished a composition in his honour (it was an excercise for the Electroacustic Music Career of Quilmes Univfersity)... I LOVE STRAVINSKY!!!!! (and Bela Bartok too!)

  • How are you able to post a video this long on YouTube? Not that I'm complaining;-) - it's great!

  • @jatriggs I am an early "Director" account. All early director accounts are able to do so, not the newer ones, sadly =(

  • @meneltar What a shame all videos can't be of complete pieces of music without all of the annoying interruptions. It's the one thing that I really hate about YouTube. And another annoying thing is how slowly most videos load. They sputter and stall and it really can spoil a performance of classical music. Can anything be done about that? Geez, this is the 21st Century !! Can't we do better?

  • @meneltar Probably YT could let you if you e-mailed them explaining your situation, justifying the reasons why it would be legitime from you to post an over 10min film.

  • @LordMgls I don't think so. They wouldn't probably read the e-mail anyway.

  • @meneltar Well... I guess such an important community website should have a good public relation staff... Very nice post, by the way! ;-)

  • @meneltar There are actually Youtube Partnerships now where if you have popular enough videos, youtube will pay you and you can post videos as long as you want. You can also put special pictures as the thumbnail for the video

  • @SJCSmusic It's better for me to be out of sight, since I'm not the owner of the rights of the majority of my videos =)

  • @meneltar :-D

  • @jatriggs

Stop typing and listen to the music, ponderously and peaceably.

    Cheers.

    from,

    del-boy.

  • Un video histórico de un músico que fue más allá de lo clásico.

  • wow i havent heard this in a while. Its a beautiful thing how your appreciation grows over the years.

  • Can you please tell me the analysis of this beautiful composition? the tempo? its rhythm? i would sure like to know! thank you so much

  • thank you gracias

Dios supremo los pelos de punta desde el primer compas

  • this is the piece where i learned how to fake playing. incredibly difficult.

  • I do wonder if this can be considered a definitive reading of the piece, considering not only that this performance is nearly 50 years after it was written, but by an orchestra for whom there was clearly some struggling. It appears to me as though Maestro Stravinsky is keeping the tempi fairly flat, almost in a "this is the best I can do under the circumstances" mode.

  • What an amazing video. Stravinsky was totally ahead of his time - visionary!

  • Absolute genius! One of my favorite pieces.

  • i find it hard to listen to stravinsky so much since I'm more of a Mahler fan. This one is a lot easier to comprehend than Rite of Spring. That piece still befuddles me every time.

  • the FFFF section at 27:56 gets ruined by the brass overblowing... but it's still awesome! thanks for posting this!

  • Thank you so much for posting this. I've been looking for it everywhere!

  • lol @ the random smiley chinky at the start!!!

  • @unemployedcomposer

That's what keeps artists from pulling the trigger against their temples - the chance to INNOVATE! I'm sure you'll have your chance, man.

  • I wish we had these in college. In 1988 the internet was something that the professors were just getting to use to type notes back and forth.

  • thanks ...... its not to often when we see a composer conducting his own work

  • I don't know... I saw Beethoven conduct a string trio once.

  • Thanks for posting this!

  • Thank you for upload it!

  • too bad the audio is prehistoric. But the sight of him up on the podium is priceless. At the premier of 'firebird' Richard Strauss, who was with the audience, was so impressed and dumbfounded at the sliding strings at 1:53. Just demonstrates what a genius Stravinsky is.

  • I couldn't vote 1000 stars, so I settled for 5. This is a remarkable piece of music history.

  • looks like he had to use the bathroom at the end

  • I love Stravinsky. His work is so brilliant, and the risks he takes are that of a composer so skilled that they end up not really being risks at all.

  • The beginning is good,

But from about 12:00 on it's one of the best pieces of music ever written!!

  • uno de los más grandes genios de la musica y del pensamiento humano, gracias por este magnífico video

  • doy gracias por poder ver este video.

  • It's good to hear Stravinsky conduct to hear it exactly as he wanted, a lot of the phrases make much more sense in this one than from other recordings from other conductors where they sound muddled and rhythmically unsure. anyone know if there's a video of Stravinsky conducting a full version of The Sacre?

  • There is, but I really can't find it!

  • @meneltar What about a version of him conducting The rite of Spring?

  • @udistritalextrema I wish I had it. Do you know anything about it?

  • @meneltar Not a footage of Stravinsky conducting it, but one of the ballet. Probably you have watched it already

    /watch?v=bjX3oAwv_Fs

  • @sitric9 Actually, they said Stravinsky wasn't a great conductor. In fact, during the recording of 'Rite of Spring', he completely lost the pacing of the piece and the orchestra went on playing without him!

There is a video on here where a living member of that very orchestra tells the whole story. Pretty funny, actually.

  • @P0mt3 Do you know where that video is?

  • ohhh so beautiful thanks for uplodaing this :DDD

  • i'm pretty sure this is the 1945 suite. beautiful work.

  • y per mi tambien !

  • Dios bendiga a Stravinsky !! el mas grande compositor de todos los tiempos ( para mí... )

  • Es bueno ver y oir esta hermosa obra conducida por el propio Stavinsky

  • I am going to see the Syracuse symphony orchestra play this in may, i'm so excited

  • The start of the finale, at about 25:27, is my favourite piece of music ever. It's just so pretty! I wish I could play the horn like that.

  • agreed. one of my favs as well.

  • A nice historical document here. However, this is not "Firebird COMPLETE". This is just a later suite - probably the most recent one: 1945.

  • By "Firebird COMPLETE" I mean it's not just an excerpt, but actually the whole thing - the 1919(or 1945?) Suite. The other videos of this performance here in youtube are just excerpts. My chanel philosophy is to post only complete videos.

    Thanks!

  • I see. The title is misleading as it suggests a performance of the complete ballet - something I've yet to hear Stravinsky conduct.

BTW, this is the 1945 version. You can tell by the scoring, particularly the wedding-ceremony finale. And AFAIK this was the only version Stravinsky conducted in the 1960s.

  • Well, you can hear it, at least. He conducted the complete ballet in the 1960 Columbia recording, long available on cd from Sony.

  • This is mesmerizing. I just found myself bobbing my head along with his hands somewhere around 24:20.

  • i used to watch the one of the finale everyday... now i can watch THIS everyday! ohhhh yea (:

  • Same here!

  • Why the italian television does not shows these beautiful stuff??

Why have we to watch only big brother and other garbage?

  • @sirlollo American TV doesn't show this kind of stuff much anymore either. They fill PBS with "viewer requests" during fundraising, and of course, viewers never request classical music (unless it's sung by Andrea Bocelli).

  • @sirlollo

    perché siamo italiani, semplice

  • Thank you meneltar for this video!! I really enjoyed it!

  • Happy birthday.Igor!

  • 26:27 is my fav part of the firebird suite. :)

  • This is beautiful!

And just to reply to someone's previous comment. - The Rite of Spring was considered virtually unplayable during this time, as it was thought as controversial, unfortunatley :(

  • Of course, but it was played. It remains very difficult until nowadays.

  • especially the 2nd tuba part!!! I'll be performing it with my orchestra this Saturday night :)

  • forget playing, it's staggering to fathom someone even conceiving such incredible musical thoughts..
