sick. Just sick. There is no other way to describe this. I still remember my sophomore year in hs jazz band when my band director played this recording. Wanted to put down my horn forever in shame/amazement/knowledge that I would never be that good.
I'm playing this song in jazz band and the drum part is way different. Anyways, I smashed my thumb like 10 times practicing this version. It starts about 3:44, the clicks. Hahaha.
Groundbreaking when this album broke in the mid-70's. Everyone with a horn stood up and took notice and Watrous inspired a whole genernation of bone players. Beautiful solo in melodic structure and fluid technique. The triple tonguing flurry at the end (at 4:35) just seals the package. Excellent.
one of our highschool bands is plaing this song, i'll be it a watered down version, but still pretty cool. i did my first improvised flute solo to this song! :D
What a tight band - Danny Stiles rules on lead trumpet. Watrous makes it sound so easy. Bill is also the nicest guy you will ever meet and a great storyteller. He had us all laughing until it hurt! The album cover shown at the beginning was a special promo that was sent out only to radio stations and is pretty rare. Columbia finally re-issued the original MWR albums on CD a few years ago. Thanks for sharing this man, great stuff.
Bill was my inspiration as I was a teenager. I never became anything big in music, but I still have amazing respect for him today. He can do things that few could ever dream of doing. Also, still love Tiger of San Pedro! GREAT tune!
i want to put this song on my album with me soloing. basically im just going to blow through notes when i play my bone solo, i can play an f above the fortissimo f!!! sometimes the b flat above that on a good day! great song but i wish there was more soloing with the bone, bill. bravo!

In memory of David Marc Fischer, 1962-2009, who loved Bill Watrous. We listened to Dirty Dan and the Tiger of San Pedro over and over back in 1975ish, when we were 13-year-old trombone and trumpet players. Thanks for posting this. After David's death last week, it brought back a lot of fond memories.
Good golly. I remember this tune. Amazing arrangement in a style that is roughly timeless. Excellent musicality chock full of a lot of fun technicals for the players. Musical gimmicks (chromatic scales, etc) are somehow PERFECTLY placed. How did he do it?
I know!! I feel you, im still amazed by his ability to solo, his notes and rhythm fit right in with the band! and the chromatis runs are amazing!! i love it!
wow this was an amazing performance of this tune. tempo was perfect. This tune tends to be played too fast or too slow. Soloists were amazing. Loved it.
