  • If you just graduated and cannot find a job, you'll have to do an internship. In some cases you will have to travel to get that internship. From there you can gain experience and a chance to work for that employer. It is nearly impossible to work directly at a firm especially if you didn't graduate from MIT.

  • I graduated from the University of St Andrews. My degree turned out to be absolutely worthless and completely useless.

  • @Nihilanth1982 what was it

  • 4:17 Is that Susan Boyle with glasses?

  • During an economic situation like we're experiencing here in the United States - apprenticeship or vocational school is probably a better option.

  • Got my Xray Technician certification and it was 20k worth of shit. The jobs are being filled by free intern work by the people in school. Why would somebody hire when they can get work for free. Ever since ive been trying to fight for a job, still don't have one. and I can't even get a job at Mc Donalds.

  • @MstrMnd420 Why is it that you can't get a job at McDonalds? Let me answer it for you illegals right. They are pretty smart those corporations first they out source jobs then they allow illegals to come an take jobs from our nations youth and if we had to work a low skilled job there is no positions available. I am very upset with employers today because I don't see youth in fast food resturants just hispanics and some can't speak english. This is alarming why are they hiring illegals?

  • @zjones1222 Ya that's one major problem, except it's hard to actually know if they are "illegal" lol. Most positions are filled with immigrants, but one major problem I have is there are so many people trying to get jobs at fast food that its about 30 people per position. I can usually talk my way into a job, a problem I have is I don't qualify for many jobs, since I used to work manufacturing and all gone bye bye sept cnc lathe,I am over qualified and they think ill leave for better job later

  • @MstrMnd420 English should be national language just in my opinion. Immigrants are not my concern more so than watching an industry change normally worked by teens that want to work those jobs to gain experience. If, I fall on my butt it would nice to walk into low skilled job and just work there. Honestly, I just don't feel comfortable around people that mainly speak Spanish. I am in Texas by the way, most low skilled jobs are taken anyway.

  • @zjones1222 Lol tell me about it, I live in Phoenix. I'm not racist at all and I can understand why they come to work, but I have been getting very irritated lately hearing people speaking Spanish in jobs that I can't even get cos there are 10 of them there. What ya gonna do tho = (

  • @zjones1222 Why? Because illegal immigrants are willing to work for a much lower wage. In my experience most of them are honest, hardworking people who send money back to Mexico to support families. They're doing what they must to support their families. I live in WA were most agricultural workers are illegal. There are not nearly enough American teenagers WILLING to bust their humps in the heat for low wage to supply that industry. American teenagers feel entitled to have it easy.

  • I graduted in 2009 with Biotechnology...among 6 graduates only I am eligible to work in Australia...One year later no job i do have experience of over 6 months cuz i worked valuntary in scientific research

  • Graduated in 2004 with a 2:1 in IT. Have found it almost impossible to get a real job.

Worked as a Computer Specialist three times for summer camps in America. Better than nothing, but far from graduate level IT and terrible pay.

Also worked in a financial call centre. Worse experience of my life. Basically had a nervous breakdown and had to leave. Have been unemployed ever since..

So what's my degree worth? £20k debt, broken hopes, and no graduate job to speak of. I feel scammed.

  • @sbowesuk Same hear, misery loves company but the truth is a Graduate Degree in IT will not open doors alone. Its almost like low skilled jobs are the going thing these days and those positions are taken up by illegals. In Texas the average salary is forty-thousand dollars a year so I figured maybe I will just ask for less and get lucky. Well, It turned out that I had to go and get IT certifications what gives.

  • @zjones1222 = ( I met a good man at school going for Xray tech, we became good friends and He had his IT degree. He was making $36 an hour until he got layed off. Now he is in the same position as I am with an IT degree and an Xray tech cirtification.. It is horrible. Reminds me of that book I saw. If you want to get Rich! Don't go to college! I wish I would have listened to the book and stayed working at Holiday gas station. LOL > = (

  • I graduated in 1994 with a degree in engineering, and it is no different now than it was then. It is a catch-22 ... you can't get a job without experience and you can't get experience without a job. Sometimes employers will give new grads a chance but rarely during a recession. You aren't taught that at university!

  • you are right they don't give the jobs to new grads especially if they can choose from 1,000 experienced unemployed engineers !!!

  • I would say there are some highly- educated people running the country, but they make some very poor decisions.

  • I think this is true, I agree with them and I have the same situation, because you must know someone to get a job. this why the economy is getting worse because uneducated people are in charge, well done

  • @roshanakify I have notice that too. Those uneducated are well suited as a shoe in than those educated. I worked a contract position for two years and a girl that had certifications got a job, so I asked around and they said that certifications matter more in IT work. My masters degree and doctorate work didn't mean a damn thing to them and on top of that none of my managers even had an Associates.

  • I think this film should be seen by government ministers responsible for higher education.

It is all very well Alan Meale saying graduates should be more flexible in their choice of employment, but even if they are, where are the opportunities, in this day and age?

Is it any wonder that those from lower-income backgrounds are put off going to university? It's unreasonable to expect people to make that sort of investment, in time and money, if a job can't be guaranteed on graduation.

  • Its not what you know but "WHO" you know.

  • Shame most of us don't "KNOW" anyone. I went to my fiance's graduation last month and just thought, "wow, they're all lambs to the slaughter."

  • I went to mine and I thought, "wow, I'm just a lamb to the slaughter."

  • @florinated that is so true. the power of connection is such stronger than your degree. there has been various studies on this.
