I Love this and your message Meg and how spot on you are. I LOVE your faux fur...the quality is amazing and looks no different than my Nana's old stole. And... the best part...no one had to lose their hide while still living and breathing to adorn you!
You have to keep in mind that the process used to fabricate and the wasting (going to waist land) of faux fur is very harmful for the environment and there kills a whole lot more animals that actual real furs.
I rather wear neither.
But if you plan on having a peace for a long time it is better to have real fur only because it will last longer...
I like fake fur, but it really has to look and feel fake for me to get near it. (For example, if you can't smell plastic by standing near it, I'm not touching that thing. The faux fur collar I bought last year still smells like a barbie doll. ) Seeing real fur somewhere is like seeing a spider for me- it never fails to creep me out.
That is not the correct way to cut fur fabric. I know it was your first time, but just remember that the proper way is cutting the backing ONLY with a sharp razor or exacto knife.
I try to be tolerant to a lot of things, but that's something i just cannot accept. I feel so disgusted by fur and people wearing it!! like really.. it creeps me out! and if i know someone, and that person wears it, i literally stop talking to her and go away.. :s
When i visited canada last year i went to a craft market and there was a lady who recycled old vintage fur coats into teddy bears i thought they were really nice and it was a good idea for reusing something that otherwise would have been destroyed or disposed of. I love the way the edges of this wrap are wavey it adds a nice detail to the wrap
I think fur is ugly... But there's no humane way of getting fur? What...
It's not like people are ripping the fur off these animals alive... You have to kill the animal... which there are plenty of humane ways of doing. once its dead it doesn't car what you do to it...
@llollercoaster Most of the American fur industry raises animals in horrific inhumane conditions for the sole purpose of procuring their fur. So, mostly, no there isn't a humane way. Unfortunately our fur industry is not linked with the meat industry making sure we don't waste any part of animals already being killed. Those who do, great. But it's not often or likely. Everyone has to do whatever they feel is right! For me, I go faux or no. xo, Meg
I don't really see wearing fur as nasty; just as normal as having leather loafers or eating meat. I do not support just killing the animal for it's hide. I support not letting the animal go to waste. When we kill an animal for it's meat, we are also given the chance to also use it's fur. Why would we let something so nice go to waste? I know there are some factories that produce meat and fur as not to kill any more animals then they have too....
@LadyofBammare I know what your saying everyone has had leather shoes at some point or feather pillows here in england the fur is a by product from the pet food industry I dont agree with hurting animals for there fur and I know in some parts of the world they are not humane when they get the fur but there is no reason why people should be punished for wearing it if it is done in a humane way and like you said why waste, where possible I like to use vintage fur.
I love faux fur, it is more eco-friendly and affordable. You can get faux fur in more verities than nature will ever allow making it perfect for almost every project. It is even easier to work with and care for than real fur. Next time you cut some faux fur you may want to try using a sharp box-cutter with the material fur side down to not damage the hairs; it also helps with reducing mess. =)
hi erhm my grandma used to have this real sheeps fur plaid but when she died i got it and i made an really cool sheeps fur wrap/stole/collar out of it and i love it the only reson why i used it is becuasee is becuase it would be a wased to throw away
Ironically, I actually did wear real fur last night- in my defence, I purchased it on ebay and had no idea it was real fur until I got it and the top was so awesome there was no way I wasn't going to wear it.
@vnecan leather and suede is made form cattlehide. The same kinda cattle that ends up in your McDonald's hamburger. The hide from the animal is a byproduct of that section of the meat industry. that animal was not raised and killed JUST for their fur.
I'm really like the removable collars that I've been seeing a lot in Japan so I might try to make that instead :) A wrap might be good for early fall but it's too cold for me!
I was almost hoping that you would use the stripes for the lining but the black did make a very awesome finish. I've always admired your bold use of fabrics and trim in sewing. :)
Might I suggest using a utility knife/box cutter instead of scissors if you don't want to be eating fur for a week. when you cut fur, you only want to cut the backing.
Even though I love the faux! I think that the beautiful vintage furs that are around should still be worn because they are a part of fashion history. That bring said, I do not think that new furs should be made.
@MacAronySalsa I have always felt the same way. I had a hard time with the faux fur even, truly. But I figured it was more effective to at least offer an alternative. Glad I am not the only one! -Meg
@piperstar03 Thanks, glad you appreciate the faux! I started simple as it was my first time working with the fabric, but you can make anything you want with it! Plush pillows could be fun. xo, Meg
the wrap looks horrible... it reminds me of of the shoulder / neck piece some of the guys in kiss wear ... also it reminds me of rocky horror and riff rafs end space like costume but of course in a bad way
where is that light green blouse from? soo cute!
