Thank you so much for posting this! I have this record (The Feel of Neal) but when I tried to record the track, it didn't turn out very well. Bang's idea of stereo was not wonderful!
A much better version than Cyrkle's (in my opinion) as Neil hits the highs meant to be at the end of the chorus, whereas Cyrkle sings it flat for whatever reason.
@pmoyer50 Very funny. Neil sings it much better and hits the highs that the Cyrkle's don't. Their version is flat. And Neil is not off key on too many notes. LOL!
@1960pj : I've lost all respect for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame when they inducted Neil Diamond into its fold. There are so many other greater artists who deserved the distinction. The Cyrkle captured the moment much better imo.
@pmoyer50 I'm sorry but after making such a ridiculous statement about Neil Diamond not being worthy of being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame your opinion has lost all its credibility with me. You may not like Neil Diamond and that's okay but to make such a ridiculous comment is beyond a joke. There are many artists that I'm not crazy about who are inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame but I wouldn't say they're not worthy of being there just because I don't like them.
@1960pj : The Sex Pistols were quoted as saying that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was nothing more than a piss stain - I tend to agree with their assessment. Groups like Mott the Hoople are not nominees and schmaltzy singers like Neil Diamond are. They lost all credibility. Sure, I liked some of Neil's earlier songs and I love his Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show. Songs like Sweet Caroline grate on my nerves. I did like his Solitary Man. He wrote some great songs. OK?
Where did you find this!? I've been searching for 30 years and thought I imagined that it existed. I was sure I has listened to my sister's 45 over and over in the 60's when I was 7 or 8 and never cared for the Cyrcle's version after playing this 50 times! So thanks for ending my dilemma in doubting it's existence. Previous searches had yielded no luck..
@texasgal12 A channel/user called Deymaendnjehlify just posted Neil's version of "Monday Monday" this week on YouTube. The video title is "Neil Diamond - Coke Monday Shoes". It also contains versions of some commercials Neil did in the 1960s, hence the "Coke" and "Shoes". As of a few minutes ago, it wasn't showing up in searches yet.
@texasgal12 I found "Crooked Street" on YouTube over the weekend. It was posted last month by a channel/user called mipakurris. The description is in a language other than English. This same user has also posted "Shot Down". You can get to "Crooked Street" by plugging elqaQ45lLaA after v= in the standard YouTube URL.
Also, the Cyrkle's version of this song is one of my all-time favorite records. Neil doesn't do it too badly, either. And the groups that the two co-writers were in also do great versions that may be on YouTube - Simon & Garfunkel and Bruce Woodley's group, the Seekers.
The Seekers' version is posted in at least two places in YouTube. The Simon & Garfunkel version, which was released on a mid-1990s box set and is from a 1967 live performance, is posted in at least 3 places here. (As of 1/24/2010.)
In 1966, not yet a fan of Neil, I noticed that 2 hits of that year, "Red Rubber Ball" by the Cyrkle and "I'm a Believer" by the Monkees, both had that callioppe organ intro. I think Neil had something to do with this connection. First, he recorded a cover of this song that had already been a hit, using the same organ sound. Then, he did a new song, which he didn't release until later, using the same sound, which the Monkees then copied on their hit version of it. Just my theory, though.
the first thing, this should be on cd, i like red, the letter h the numbers one and fifteen

@pmoyer50 How could one argue with the Sex Pistols? In the words of Albert Schweitzer "Opinions are like assholes, everybody's got one!"
