hi i just got a mini aussie and he is amazing! i was just wondering if you have any tips and advice on what to do when he starts "herding" like nipping at pants and such?! sometimes he starts to growl and scared my daughter! is there anything i should do to teach him not to do this?
@TheEyeForStyle This went on for a long time and there are still certain things that trigger herding instincts in him, but here are some tips and things I tried. Is your daughter running from him/at him? If not, try and figure out what triggers his "herding". If nothing is consistent, whenever he does this, have a coke can near by filled with coins and shake it at him when he heard, nips or growls. It alerts him and lets him know those type of behaviors are not ok ...Worked for us. Good luck!
@jaceywatts10 Constant rewarding. Take him outside and use a key word or phrase, I used "go potty" and when they go, give them a treat RIGHT AWAY. Do this every single time and thats all it takes. Eventually they'll make the connection and it doesn't take long. Also it helps in the beginning to always take them to the same spot in the yard ... Now Scout will attempt to pee on command when I tell him to, even if he doesn't need to just to get a treat.
@LuvPinkTwizzler Thanks! This is all footage from the very first day I got em' but when they're this small they are literally worn out just from walking 50 feet and sleep basically all day. Now he is about 4 months old and we take him on about two short walks a day and play with him outside and inside for a good amount of time but he is still content with spending a lot of time in his cage. That's one thing we were nervous about too but it turned out being fine.
@emberwolf0 My first dog was an Aussie and I had him for 15 years ... Best dog ever. They're smart, loving and loyal and as you mentioned, a beautiful breed .. Cant go wrong.
