I had two 205GTi's both were 1.9's The first was back in the 80's a white non cat big valve head with body kit, big wheels, etc I loved it and it went round corners like no other 4 seater car I have owned since... so light and nimble it was made of cardboard... It died with over steer on a lamp post I must of cried for weeks I was young but I still miss that car! The second was black and had a cat nice but was not the same...
The only golf worth having is a mark 1......8v turbo engine in a 205 is better on the road and the track than a VR6. 20v turbo VW has a shit oil pump. 16v pug can get as much power but works. I love my gripper diff.

If you read my comment you will notice that I don't even have a 205 GTi anymore, I have a mk3 VR6. And if your VR6 is moddified then its a different story anyway.
Stick a factory spec 205 1.9 GTi next to a factory spec mk3 Golf VR6 and the 205 will eat it on the track anyday of the week. I really don't care anyway, I have 300bhp Volvo 850 T5 for track days so i'm more than happy to take you up on the track day offer babe. ;)
If you've got another motor you might as well re-build the head or send it for a re-build. I would even consider some performance cams and stuff whilst you're there :)

I'm jealous now :) I used to have a mk2 Golf GTi 8v race built to around 140 bhp and track prepared it myself. It was an absoulte blower after the full weight reduction but I had to get rid of it last year due to space and finances. Gutted about that but still. What sort of power do you think you're getting from the 1.6? Is it track prepared or just a weekend motor?

well focus man if u must know its a 1.6 gti theyr a hell of a lot faster off the line than the 1.9 because theyr lighter and more torquier than the 1.9...the 1.9 would kill the 1.6 top end but the 1.6 would leave most off the line...my 1.6 chewed a scooby up the quarter mile at Crail in the rain
theres actually 3mph difference in the top end of a 1.9 and a 1.6....the 1.6 has shorter ratio gears hence why its better on acceleration; nothin to do with weight.....trust me; ive owned both the 1.6 and the 1.9 and theres nothin to tell them apart especially with the fact that anyone know knows a little puts the 1.6 box in the 1.9.......thanks x
Well, you can't know all the facts from this video. It could be that the gti peugeot is lightened etc. But 800kg and 130hp is quite effective. And it could also be that the driver of peugeot got a good start?
i suspect that it is a peugeot 205GTI 1.9 but i doubt that the golf is a VR6 but just a normal GTI.
After mk2s golfs started to get heavy though and that might be why the puglet won. dont get me wrong 1.9 pug GTIs are wild as the wind, faster than the notorious mk1&2 golf by quite a considerable amount, faster than sciroccos, alfasuds, XR2's & RSturbos. which were all its competitiors of its day. they aint no slough, so it is quite possible that this is ligitimate.
I used to have a 1.9 Gti and a 309 SRi many moons ago but I still have a VR6 mk3 in the garage and i would be very surprised if it didn't getting a serious beat down from either 1.6 or 1.9 205 in any race. The VR6 is heavy and wasn't really any faster than it's GTi predessors (especially in mid-range), It certainly didn't have the torque band of the 8V's and doesn't feel anywhere near as fast. The 205 would ruin it in the bends as well :)

205's amazing little car. my dad bought a tweaked one off a hill climber. 180 brake at the wheel, low, stiff and tiny tyres. it would smoke anything off the line and he used to make a point of racing 911s. used to leave them standing right up to the 127mph redline! it was a bit special though. main reson they're so quick is because they are built from matchsticks, tinfoil and tracing paper whereas the golf is carved from solid granite. you could breathe heavily at the 205 and it would dent.

1.9 gti pug was a mean machine, not well built really tho. a few years bk i had a 1.7 16v alfasud (the thing subaru copied the engine from) i used to like racing 1.9gti pugs, they were very slightly quicker down the straight, but i killed them on the corners. they dont handle well at the speeds they can do, they are ok in down but they aint really made for it, peugeot just put a big engine in the bay and left it at that. great for a drag race, pish in a street race
I don`t believe any alfasud would beat a pug thru the bends, for a start, they rust so much the doors would fall off if you turned too hard. I had one once and the engine dropped due to the mounts rusting away. i had a pug too and the chassis set up pisses over the rusty italian shitheap. you must have been up against a crap driver !

205 for what it is, is a very very fast car especially through the bends and the sensation of speed is incredible. A true drivers car with looks and you can really feel the road when you drive one. Recognized in britain as the best hot hatch ever and considering the brits dont like the french much that says it all!

by any chance do u remember the 205 T16 Evo2 rally car? the domination of group B rallying? Much better car than the Maxi turbo, but u have a point. Cos peugeot mainly concentrated on the rally car, and put little effort into the production version. Still, as standard production cars, they are both damn good. As rally cars, they would beat any modern equivalent to date, easy.
mk3 golf came out with the VR6 because the GTI was too slow (due to stupid body weight increase) the VR6 was made to keep up with the Mk1 and 2 GTI engines, same as the R32 now, the engines are getting bigger to accomodate weight, that peugeot is a 1.9 in a car that weights a sack of feathers, acceloration 205 will always win, VR6 will have the HP to bury it after about 80 mph though

205's amazing little car. my dad bought a tweaked one off a hill climber. 180 brake at the wheel, low, stiff and tiny tyres. it would smoke anything off the line and he used to make a point of racing 911s. used to leave them standing right up to the 127mph redline! it was a bit special though. main reson they're so quick is because they are built from matchsticks, tinfoil and tracing paper whereas the golf is carved from solid granite. you could breathe heavily at the 205 and it would dent.

1.9 gti pug was a mean machine, not well built really tho. a few years bk i had a 1.7 16v alfasud (the thing subaru copied the engine from) i used to like racing 1.9gti pugs, they were very slightly quicker down the straight, but i killed them on the corners. they dont handle well at the speeds they can do, they are ok in down but they aint really made for it, peugeot just put a big engine in the bay and left it at that. great for a drag race, pish in a street race

I don`t believe any alfasud would beat a pug thru the bends, for a start, they rust so much the doors would fall off if you turned too hard. I had one once and the engine dropped due to the mounts rusting away. i had a pug too and the chassis set up pisses over the rusty italian shitheap. you must have been up against a crap driver !

twas a 3door miami blue with full stainless magnex system and mi-16 bumpers. the best car i have ever owned, but i hit some ice and rolled it into a field.. GRRR

205 for what it is, is a very very fast car especially through the bends and the sensation of speed is incredible. A true drivers car with looks and you can really feel the road when you drive one. Recognized in britain as the best hot hatch ever and considering the brits dont like the french much that says it all!

by any chance do u remember the 205 T16 Evo2 rally car? the domination of group B rallying? Much better car than the Maxi turbo, but u have a point. Cos peugeot mainly concentrated on the rally car, and put little effort into the production version. Still, as standard production cars, they are both damn good. As rally cars, they would beat any modern equivalent to date, easy.

mk3 golf came out with the VR6 because the GTI was too slow (due to stupid body weight increase) the VR6 was made to keep up with the Mk1 and 2 GTI engines, same as the R32 now, the engines are getting bigger to accomodate weight, that peugeot is a 1.9 in a car that weights a sack of feathers, acceloration 205 will always win, VR6 will have the HP to bury it after about 80 mph though
