  • Donde estas mi papagena!!?? :)

  • @mayraymauri hahaha hola amiga ;)

  • @Addy19432 Mozart actually wrote it in German (the vernacular for his audience) because he wanted the people watching to be able to understand what was going on in the story. I hardly consider it a crime against the arts to make art more accessible to a wider audience.

  • oh come on .. r u serious ??? ... this belongs to germany just like mozart himself ... never say he was austrian !!!!!!!!!!! to translate it into another language is a crime against the arts ....

  • NEIN!!!! Es musst in Deutsch sein! :PPPPPPPP

  • omg this translation is fuckin terrible!!!!!!

  • I think translating operas from their original language rarely works, because the music was originally written to fit that particular language. I can't imagine French opera, say, « Carmen», sung in Italian. Or «La bohême» sung in German. And this «Zauberflöte» duet in English sounds just wrong.

  • In English definitely sounds like crap (..baby chicks?...at 0:56). But I suppose that this is a matter of custom in States. Mozart had in mind changing the habit of singing everything in Italian, which had some sort of monopoly at that time.

Now italian is changed with english? Not ok at all

  • @adhrianuss If you think this is bad/weird, they were even worse about changing operas in 18th century Europe. That includes replacing or changing the music/plot, let alone translating it to a different language. It was just as much about profit as it is today haha

  • I've seen this opera in both English and German, and I must say that I appreciate being able to continue watching the performers while I hear the show. So I'm not saying it makes no difference, but it helps to follow the story which I like.

I was born in Germany and I even I can't understand German when sung in operatic voice.

  • Oh dear God. Mozart was trolling high school relationships before they even existed.

  • awfull!

  • jajaajaj this beuti

  • To everyone complaining that it's in English: I'm NOT a huge opera fan, so I'm not an expert about this kind of thing, but it seems to me that the main reason most people dismiss opera is that they can't understand what's being said. Maybe if someone who never got into opera before sees this and likes it, they'll be more inclined to listen to it in the original language. Sure THIS performance is in English, but the German version still exists. They still perform it.

  • @Luindriel: I love your comment in the description about how maybe now Papageno can stop whining. ;)

  • When was this performance recorded?

  • Will you get over yourselves, all hose who complain are what is wrong with 'classical music' as a whole; the elitist attitude. Mozart is long dead so no one can say what he would have thought. I for one love this and in fact is the first opera I saw which has led to others. The performers are brilliant as well.

  • MOZART... in English??? disgusting,nasty,gross,revolting,ugly,lousy,crappy,noisome,squalid,beastly,

    sordid,mucky,putrid,augean.

Bad singers, they don't understand the spirit of Mozart. MEDIOCRE!!!

  • You don't understand Mozart if you are ridiculing his music in general. Even though it's not the original language, It's still his music. And how dare you call them bad singers.

  • @sumimasent

Why not in English. Dont forgett that until the late 60thies in most German Operas every not German Opera was sung in German. I stronlgy remember my first Rigoletto in German was sung by American Bariton in German and he was good. My first Nabucco also in German and Abigail was the American Sopran Nancy Tatum. I wonder if she is still alive and if anyone knows her. She was great.

Today we are all spoiled by the original language. But the productions in German where not bad.

  • @sumimasent

oh yes, you understand Mozart better than Levine, you can sing like these pair or even better, and you think my friends will watch you keeping up Mozart's heritage howling in a foreign language. long shot, dude. come back to earth.

  • This piece of music is to sing by young singers!

And to add injury to insult they sing with such shallow musical voices...

  • Mozart in english :<(( very nasty :<((

  • such blasphemy to ruin Mozart :[

  • wow....not in german...not ok

  • The Masonic wall?

  • too much jumping around...

  • why are they singing in English? o0

  • who is the queen of the night in this play??

  • Erika Miklosa.

  • for real and is this like in a dvd for sale??

  • Yes on Amazon. :)

  • ohh ok thanks do i just search it as the magic flute?

  • @521856 Take it up with Mozart, he wrote it.

  • @521856 bad??

  • @521856 Listen to it in the original German. The English lyrics sound crass.

  • esta cancion me da ganas de reirme

  • Me too. :)

  • This production is just fantastic...wish I had the DVD. Seems like a PERFECT introduction for children to opera and the beauty of Mozart. Thanks for posting

  • You're welcome. Thanks for your comment. You can find the dvd at Amazon.

  • I remember seeing this in New York. It was awesome!!! I think Nathan Gunn is the most best Papageno ever!! :)))

  • Oh dear! My voice teacher wants me to be Papagena! I hope I'm up for it! Fantastic translation!!!!!

  • this song is supposed to be in german!

    not english!!!

  • Please read the description and the other comments. Thanks. :)

  • marvelous inscenation!

  • Nathan Gunn's the "dish"--and this is the best costumed, lighted, choreographed, and sung MAGIC FLUTE--ever. Don't go by this fuzzy vignette. See the whole opera on PBS. I loved the English translation!!! Since every other country translates operas into its own language, we should do it with every single opera. But be sure to get this witty writer!

  • Thank you for your great comment. I don't know why some people react so vehemently to this English translation. I think it's great.

  • I think this is great because it gets the younger audiences interested.

I remember studying this in music and thinking "oh, how boring" but then I saw this and thought "Okay, I'm going to watch this in German as well!"

That's how I got into opera.

  • I agree. And I love the girl who played Papagena. She's got the cutest face and such a playful personality.

  • @Luindriel

it's called "academism" and "purism" :)

i've been to a rehearsal of the Magic Flute peformed in English translation and was a witness to an argument (in a joking form :) between the singers who believed it shoud've been sung in German (they were singing their arias in German during the break), and those who thought that translation is cool

  • @Luindriel

I think that translations especially are great for people who are getting themselves into the opera - and it makes them feel more "at home" in the opera kingdom

funny enough, i can't stand listening to the operas originally done in my native Russian language. have no idea why :) (but really enjoyed the version of Magic Flute translated to Russian. go figure :)

  • As far as I know, operas usually are performed in the language in which they were wirtten. I'm from Germany, still Italian operas are performed in Italian. I've recently seen a German opera in TV - it was performed in Spain, still they kept the original language.

However, very good translation. Sounds good^^

  • What a nice translation, I liked it!

  • I do not like this aria and the opera in English!

  • =( =(

  • *giggle* I didn't notice him removing the codpiece during the last refrain until now XD

  • lol i just realized how DTF these two are stripping throughout the song, they are ready to have a flock of lil papagenos and papagenas what a stud and slut woot jk love it

  • i agree this is an opera buffa after all when the norm was to compose operas in italian (even in vienna),

i will say i am just more accustomed to the german and think it a bit more singable, however this is more entertaining and can reach masses ( i would agree probably wolfgang's prerogative)

  • Worst performance, worst set. there is a high school version here, more enjoyable

  • hahahahahahaha..... you are so funny.... this performance was recorded last year, and is one of the best Met productions, Have you seen it in NYC?.... well i did..... and then at the HD program........, the stages, colors, puppets, lights.... and of course the singers are great.... i can't wait to see them again this year, but this time it will be the original version in German, not english..... yeheeyyyyy!!!!

  • The artists I'm sure are fine singers, but you'd never know it in this mess. Seriously, this is just a F'n mess. Been on a cruise ship? Seen better at sea.

  • baby chicks ! babyyy chicks ! baaaaaaaby chiiiiicks ! lol

  • trash. translated version. lousy performance. no respect for the composer and the original language. "Baby chicks"??? rediculous! awkward!

  • Thank you!! I've been saying this all along but people will always have this "purist" attitude, without realizing that Mozart would have written and/or translated his operas into whatever language would have sold the most tickets.

  • Horrible version

  • hahahahahaha.

  • In german is better, but in this version I understand that they're saying, and this is so great xD

Puedo hacer un slide-show.

  • mozart was a musical genius ... i have never heard music equal to this...how 1 man can come up with such sounds in his head is amazing!

  • english does not do this opera any justice

  • This is absolutely awful in English. They also sing in a very Broadway fashion, which is dead wrong. She is particularly painful to hear. I hope never to see Mozart massacred like this ever again.

  • Her voice sounds strange even for a Broadway style just like something's... not... right. I can't put my finger on it. It sounds like air escaping. Can't put it into words. I hate the English too. Now I can't speak German, but that's what subtitles are for. They already have English ones and all Met Opera productions have subtitles (even IN the theater, there's screens in front of the chairs w/ subtitles for every performance), why not just keep it in German?

  • This was a special shortened, English-version production to draw in families with children. They do the full German version also. In fact they'll be doing it next year!

I've seen both these singers in other things and they're both wonderful. Perhaps the file compression is affecting how her voice sounds here?

  • OH MY GOD. this is TERRIBLE in english :P

  • These are the people i saw! I loved them!

  • i don't like so much in english :S

  • Porque no?

  • lol we watched this opera for school and had to compose a sequel haa what a great opera
