The real tale has never been made into a really good movie. The real tale says that she cuts out her tongue not gives away her voice. And the Disney version ends with the mermaid actually getting her prince. She never gets her prince. She dies. And the prince was not her only reason for wanting to become human. It was to have a soul that would never die. read it! it's really good.
Why must you plague every page about The Little Mermaid??!! Disney's The Little Mermaid is just an ADAPTATION...it's not fake. And in my opinion, Disney's production is much more touching and it sends out a better message than Hans Christian Anderson's work. He wrote that book based on his problem with his homosexuality. I watched clips of the anime version and I honestly think that it wasn't special at all. In fact I though that it was poorly done and lackluster in it's story telling.
the problem with people is that "happy happy good beautiful yay" appeals more to their aestheic-selfish-driven personalities. it takes maturity and depth of character to like something unhappy
Just b/c it's Disney doesn't mean that it's "happy loving joy joy". Ariel is a dynamic character who truly has a passion and pursues it. Anderson's Mermaid came off a little too passive. And like I mentioned b4, Anderson didn't really write it specifically for children. He used the idea of "the unattainable prince" b/c his love was unrequited by another man. Disney actually made something important out the Ariel, making her an inspiration for young girls who have a dream just like her.
i think the message to go after your dream is great! =)
but again, if you love something set it free, if it doesn't come back, it wasn't meant to be. that was Anderson's message. passiveness is not a crime, either.
I understand where you are coming from, but still after doing my research, Anderson wasn't aiming for that. It was really his way of telling his love interest how he felt. I never said that passiveness was a crime, but we live in an age of more female empowerment which I think is very important. The Disney version came out in '89 and it motivated young girls (like I was) to be strong and assertive.
Interesting, I didn't know their was such a film...haha. The little mermaid is very cute, indeed! I would like to see this movie in mystery science theater...hahaha. XD

You'd find it in any Folk and Fairy Tale book.
I read it for my fairy tale course.
She doesn't actually die, she becomes immortal. Its still a good read though.
I don't mind the disney either ...both are good ^^

The REAL version is Hands Christian Anderson's The Little Mermaid. Search for it with "The Little Mermaid anime".
Forget the Disney happy-ending, it was changed to keep it a franchise and Ariel and Disney princess!

Okay, I am so confused.
I thought The Little Mermaid was a French tale.
And I don't remember the mermaid princess' voice being left alone.
I do remember the legs aching but I also don't remember the ending being the same as this one...
This whole version throws me into a huge world of confusion.

Search for "The Little Mermaid anime" in the search bar.
that is the REAL story written by Hans Christian Anderson, who was from Denmark, not the fake Disney variation!
