It took around 17hrs to do, and yes you need to use good reference to create photo realistic paintings.

@Nukharo i go to an art school everyday where im surrounded by people who do this sort of thing without the aid of graphing. if he repeated the picture again without having to rely on such a cheap form of transferring lines, then i would be impressed. but like i said before, i love how he does crosshatching work then blends the whites to create the overall value. most artists just use the air brush tool but i like how he does it differently.

@loplop91 Just as a reference for you. When Michelangelo worked on The Sistine Chapel he enlarged his drawings by putting a grid over the top of his drawings and transferring them a square at a time. He then traced them onto the walls of the chapel by dusting charcoal through holes made in the outlines (tracing).

Artists have used a grid system for century’s to maintain and obtain perfect proportions.

I don’t claim to be the best digital painter, just trying to do the best I can. :)

@loplop91 my last reply to this lol, Im sure he did draw his subjects, he also got his apprentices to draw for him. He may have also use a hand held grid when drawing his subjects too. who knows? (Yes hand held grids were used also) In short there are many ways to achieve the goal.
