  • Well, I lived in PVD for a while and frequent the area regularly - there is access underneath the highway. As a matter of fact, the entrances to the garage is exactly where you are claiming Rt. 95 blocks off. For what it's worth.

  • what the fuck?this video was probably manufactured by people who do not even live in prov, there arent any entrances towards the highway becaus there is a FUCKING HIGHWAY THERE!

  • uh this chick is on crack.

everyone goes into the mall the same way~! they take the entrance in the parking complex!! who the hell walks to the mall???????

  • This demonstrates that anyone can misinterpret information to prove their point. The important aspect missing from this misguided video is that Interstate 95, an eight lane highway, runs the entire length of the west side of the mall. The video presumes that less affluent people lack knowledge about how to locate a building entrance unless it faces the direction of their home. This is a preposterous thesis!

  • It's called GOOD MARKETING. Of course they want people from the East Side and people staying at the Westin to have easy access because they'll actually spend money there!! What a concept!

I don't understand the point of this video.

  • This is pure bullshit. Anyone who wants access to the Providence Place Mall has it. Somehow the "poor people" in Providence have no problem getting inside the mall - it's filled with wanna be ganstas and thugs spending their welfare money every single day so what is this bitch talkin bout?

  • your missing the point.

  • i need the cams

  • thats not discrimination. american society is is always in this constant need to be babied.

so its difficult to walk in. some people need to get coping skills.

  • i think they build it like that.because of the freeway,it has nothing to do with the poor neiborhood,

  • this mall discriminates there is no entrences on the pore side of providence

  • People who are poor spell poor incorrectly and also say things like "there is no entrences"

  • and people that spell things rite on the internet are fagets

  • Umm, they fail to mention that you can walk directly under the mall to reach the other side. You don't have to go all the way around. You CAN enter through the car entrances, it's just not as inviting. And the highway is the biggest reason for this design. Perhaps when Carpionato opens up his development on the site of the old Fruit and Produce Warehouse, they'll spruce up the underpass to make it a bit more inviting.

  • They have the parking garage facing the highway, not poor neighbourhoods. The ground level shops and entrances are on francis street because most people who are walking are comming from the city, not the highway. And if you so feel like entering from the back walk in through either garage entrance.

  • wtf thats not why the providence place mall was built that way i live be hind the mall and i can still get in there no doing that to "not show us the beauty of the mall"

they do that so they can have a parking garrage you dumbass and by the way were not poor we are middle class like seriously that aint right!

  • Design defines the experience. The mall's glittering entrances and exits make for a rich one.Anyone is welcome to enjoy this glitz and glass;we don't need to be reminded that we're poor.Facing attractive sides of the city, the views grant inclusion to the rich playground on the waterfront. The Apex DMV is hideous--does anyone feel cozy there because it lacks marble/cheery lighting? No.Historially, the common man has enjoyed the escape of elevated atmospheres set by movies, stores, and restaurants.

  • the west side has a shitload of parking garage entrances.. wich is how most of the people who go there get there lol... i was there tonight actualy

  • The women in the video is right but to say the peopl in the west are sketchy...? Eveyone in that dam city is sketchy. Providence has been taken over by Hispanics and a Gay hispanic Mayor . South West East and North parts of the city is filled with the same ignorant people. The City of East Providence is no different.

  • What is wrong with you? its ironic how ignorant you are!!!. For you to say this is terrible. Have you ever gotten to know a hispanic person? You should try...they are the most loyal friends you would have ever had. I was raised in a location that is mainly hispanic, and I have nothing but good to say about them. I am praying that God will remove the blinders from your eyes and see that God made us all. God's heart breaks over this type of foolishness. You need to repent

  • lol ya I have had a couple, and they tend not to be so good. well in one case the kid was a constant liar. There are a few who are good people that I have come across but for the most part they are out for themselves and I have even been told by a woman who has a spanish husband. besides that point ya the city is no different from any other part or more special.

  • o yeah by the way the mayor is white not Hispanic u should do your research you idiot

  • mayor CICILLINI is italian american you retard

  • what? you got a problem with that?because i am hispanic i live in pawtucket but i like providence, seem to me that you are not only racist but you got prejudice,

  • lol im not racist...im just making a point with true statements. im not saying it is bad either. I know some people don't like gays and the fact that everything in providence now is dubbed with spanish language.

  • I dont know where you live my friend, but maybe you seem a lot of dominicans or mexicans, people think the all latinos are the same, with no education,I am from honduras and know how to speak english very well, and I am gay too,, so nobody decide to be gay so save you coments for somenting positive,

  • good for you!

  • It's just a building but it says so much about the American society and culture.

  • thank you for this valuable work

  • lemme guess, you are a rich college student fighting for the voice of the downtrodden? You do know thw back of the mall faces a highway and not a neighborhood right?

  • Not fighting for rights of downtrodden. Not rich. Not in college. Back of Mall is less than 100 yards from residential living and faces some of the most historic neighborhoods in Providence. The highway is elevated allowing cars and people to pass to the mall... and go around it to the front.

  • And the back of the mall has one of two vehicle entrances that accept, I would estimate, 95% of the incoming shoppers. Zero vehicle entrances on the east side of the mall- who's discriminated against now?

None of this changes the fact that the mall is disputed territory of gangs from all of the "excluded" neighborhoods that you pine for so longingly. And a few from the "rich" side of town too.

  • This is an observation. The mall acknowledges there are no entrances facing these neighborhoods. Knowing there is housing less than 100 yards away, why do you believe the mall has no entrances facing the entire west side of Providence?

  • I believe it is for security reasons. many of those historic neighborhoods are filled with some sketchy people. At least this way they can keep an eye on who's getting in.

  • This is an astute observation. I agree that the architecture of the mall was influenced by a socio-economic decision. The ironic thing is, the neighborhood is now redeveloped with luxury condos and will be as 'unsketchy' as the East Side in a couple of years.

  • Well, that's what they said about the armory district and I still wouldn't want my kids outside after about 7pm around there. Please use big words in your reply. thank you...

  • That's a shame. The armory district is a great and beautiful part of the city. What are your thoughts on the armory itself? What do you think should happen to it?

  • "Beautiful" yes, "great" not so much. The armory itself is awesome. One of the coolest buildings I have ever seen and its in the middle of a city. The big problem is that whatever you decide to do with it would cost millions and millions of dollars. It will be a tough sell to high property taxed providence residents to spend that money on something that wont likely benefit them.

  • umm, you don't have to walk all the way around the mall. you can enter underneath the wintergarden. do some research before saying stuff like this. and the east side of the mall was made to be accessible to downtown. thats where most of the pedestrian traffic comes from. everyone else drives in

  • No entrance on the west is bias? BULLSHIT. The west side is strictly for parking garages. Anyways, stating the west side is poor is not entirety true. Look @ the 903 and the other mills around the mall being converted to condos. Check your research before making a statement

  • Thanks for your comment KB1KOI. I am assuming that you are from Providence and are familiar with the area. As you know the mall was built before the 903 or any of the other condos started making their appearance. In fact when the mall was built, the 903 was an empty lot filled with broken bricks from the old Cold Storage facilities (RIP 1998) According to their research, the area behind the mall represents the lowest income bracket their charts allow - the $40,000 or less.

  • As you know, the Valley area and Olnyville district have an average income which is even less than 40 and all these neighborhoods reside to the west of the mall. On repeated visits to the tax assessment office in City Hall, the assessor himself referred to the Promenade District (directly behind the mall) as a "graveyard" and "economic liability on the city".

  • It is incredible that there has been an upswing of development in the last couple of years, and sure enough this will eventually change the economic profile of those neighborhoods. We enjoy going to the mall, just making an observation that it is pretty remarkable that there is absolutely no accommodation for pedestrian traffic from our side of town.

  • Hopefully Struever Brothers can help us out with a decorated skybridge or something that can get the new members of our West Providence well-to-do safely on foot directly into the mall. Fingers crossed. (sorry they only allow 500 words or less per reply!)

  • i like that mall.
