  • Totally brilliant, JM was the man, but I can't help but think that Whisperin' Bob looked a lot like a Sloth as he waited for JM to tune up!

  • Just gently gorgeous.

    Thank-you.

  • The mics are AKG C451 condensers with a CK5 capsule screwed onto the end of a VR1 extender tube. The BBC had acquired a large number of these kits from AKG in the early 1970s, and you often see them used on BBC2 music programs of this period.

  • i wish the song never start i love it when he talks

  • "all you Geezers up in Bolton?" It cudda been me! I saw John sooooo many times and he never sang this

  • "all you Geezers up in Bolton?" It cudda been me!

  • who are the two knobheads who don't like this. Can't believe it.

  • jipj

  • anybody know what tuning he put it in? Open A or something?

  • @Youreabellsniff It's AGAEGC maybe a bit flat from that.

  • What a performance. I'm new to John Martyn. The man's a legend.

  • Lovely to see this after sooooooo many years! I can't understand why the BBC didn't put this session on the DVD they released of John Martyn?!

  • Thank you so much for sharing this!!

  • Stunning. Devotees know the fx from 4.10 onwards as coming from Call Me Crazy, also on the Sunday's Child album. "That's lovely... the very fine music of John Martyn" says Whispering Bob, and he knows what he's talking about. That's music for my funeral...

  • Slick shit huh!!!

  • WHAT A MAN!!! Funny, talented and most importantly soulful. One of the best.

  • Back again, listening to 1.00 to 4.00 and repeat for about half an hour. Genius. Why hasn't somebody covered this tune?

  • Great Great Great John! RIP.

  • Simply gorgeous live performance of this.

    Thanks.

  • Very nice. Thanks for the share.

  • YouTube should have six stars for John

  • Just awesome..

  • Absolute bliss.

  • my favourite martyn performance

  • This was on bbc4 guitar heroes recently and this was the track that had most resonance for me. Just love the FX section from 4.10, and the helping hand to get there - does a performance get much better than this!

  • @gaspanda I saw this when it was first broadcast in Spring 75 :-)

John had just played 'One Day Without You', and is tuning up from the standard tuning pattern four semitones below normal he used for that number. The magic button that 'Bomber Harris' gets to press is the power ON switch of a Maestro PS-1 Phase Shifter wired ahead of the Echoplex EP-3 in the FX loop.

  • i love the little whispering bob chat.

  • Possibly my fave tune ever!!! amazin!!

  • Ahh.. the master at his very best. One of my all time favourites.

  • I'm speechless; never expected to see this! Straight to my favorites! THANK YOU for posting!

    cheers

  • simply wonderful, the big man at his best. All cockney too... God bless you John

  • @schnugglepup1

He was also an Honorary Scotsman.

    Loved by all.

    Music transcends.
