H.ey, thanks! I've always wanted to play the intro...nobody else on Utube had it, although everybody was doing it-don't pay attention to this negative people-we that appreciate it are ever so grateful!
Thanks for putting this out there, Marc. You played it slow in a very capable and teaching manner, which proves you know the solo. Ignore the idiots who, for bogus reasons, rip on you. It was close enough to Randall's for me to now know even more of it, thanks to you.
Hey Pete...somebody light a firecracker in your ass? No father around to let you know what a dumbass you've become? I bet all your pets commit suicide.
@PeteTzah what the fuck is your problem dude? have nothing better to do than flame people on youtube? you must live a pretty sad and lonely existence if that's how you pass the time.
Nice playing bud. To all you morons who are talking shit...any decent guitar player takes a song and makes it his own. What that means is he doesn't play it exactly like he sees "on the video" and he plays it to suit his own style. This version is very good...not excellent and most definitely not bad. Marc has made it his own and from a musician's stand point that's all that matters.
actually your a stupid fuck and its really too bad that you havent posted yourself attempting to play this because i was looking forward to seeing what people said about YOUR playing
Yes my guitar is a Fender Bullet Deluxe, 1983-4 I believe. It was originally designed to be a Strat/Tele hybrid. I didn't like the original pickups so I took them out, bored out the bridge pickup to accomodate a double and put in some pickups I really likes off a pink Ibanez. And voila! My Custom Bullet.
i dont know why everyones giving you shit, i thought the playing was fine. but you are in a different key than the song is, i dont know if thats intentional or not, but not bad guitar playing
I am playing it in the correct position, my guitar is just tuned a 1/2 step (or one fret) lower than normal. I use a medium-heavy gauge of string because I like the tone better.
Ever heard the expression, "You can add, but you cannot take away"?
Marc played the solo rather well and never took anything away from it - He only added to it, which is good and creative! It's called improvising, so get a clue, will ya?
Java..those that can't do, talk. Go back to doing what you do best (sponging off your parents) and leave the rest of the world out of your inane opinion.
I'm basing my opinion on having listened to this song a thousand times. Mate you're on drugs if you think your version is 95% accurate. Why would I want to put my version on youtube and embarass myself like you? If I were you I'd find another instrument.
Hey man, these drugs are good! You wouldn't want to put your version on YouTube so as not to embarrass yourself? But you have no problem criticizing others? I see... LMAO
YouTube is way more fun than I ever imagined with guys like you around. I was expecting serious and genuine comments, not random bashing.
Can I ask what you are basing your opinion on? I don't see your version on your YouTube page. Have you closed your eyes and listened? It sounds just like the original despite the fact that I "may" be playing some of the notes in a different position from the original.
Come On! My version is way more accurate than that one. I would say that Stratman1920's version is about 70% accurate and my version is about 95% accurate.
You also have to remember the context in which I learned that song. It was 15 years ago and I learned it stricly by ear, I had no YouTube or any kind of video to refer to. I've been playing the same way since. I know it's not 100% accurate but it's damned close.
Probably one of the worst versions of this lead break I've heard. Does it really matter that you're not playing it exactly like Steely Dan? It does to me.
The album version of the song is in A major, not G major. Listen closely to the rhythm in the song, because some parts of the riff are played straight instead of swung. The opening chromaticism is played as a pull-off and not a slide. Around 0:25, you may want to check your notes--your fingers will be doing 3-4-3-1 instead of 3-2-1.
In other words, not 98% there yet, but well on your way.
Your comments are probably accurate, granted the verse is in A major but I believe the chorus is in G major so, arguably the song could be considered G major.
Your point is well taken however around 0:25 as I have noticed in other videos exactly what you are describing and I agree with you. Thanks for the "constructive" criticism, it's appreciated (I put constructive in quotes because some of the other comments have not been).
Though the chorus starts with a Gmaj chord, it functions as a bVII in the key of A major. The fact that the chorus doesn't start on a tonic or dominant is part of the song's appeal, since it creates a 'pull' back to the tonic (Amaj), which of course leads back into the verse, a much more clearly-defined A major.
Actually, there's a similar key fake-out for the start of "Any Major Dude." The song starts on a D major chord, but when the verse begins, that Dmaj is revealed as a pre-dominant (IV), and A/G (I/bVII) as a leading chord in the key of A major. That's what makes Steely Dan awesome.
Oh, and its originally played in a different octave than most of what you're doing. watch one of the bands live clips. Did you learn it off the internet or something?
Actually I learn everything I play by ear. I've known this song for more than 10 years, long before YouTube.
BTW, you're wrong about the key that I'm playing it in, it's exactly right, and if you knew how to play this you'd know that it cannot be played an octave higher or lower than where I'm playing it, sorry.
I'm not saying that this 100% accurate, but it's about 98%.
Have you ever seen steely dan play this song live? Obviously not, because the guitarist(s) are playing it differently than you. But I guess you know better than them, right?
No I have never seen them play it live. Close your eyes and listen, does it really matter that I'm not playing it EXACTLY like Steely Dan. I get complimented all the time by professionals on my sound and accuracy when I play this song live with my band. I guess it really only bothers you that I play it differently than Steely Dan. Sorry.
It doesn't bother me. But what makes me laugh is your pink floyd baseball hat, your tucked in shirt, glasses, voice, face, and your chinos. Who are you trying to be? You come off as a creep and a wannabe, though I'm not sure why
Well that's cool. There aren't many Provencher's around. I'm originally from Aylmer, QC (Ottawa). I notice there was a Pete Provencher that played with you. Brothers?
I've been looking for a "lesson" on this all night--thanks, great job! As a beginner, it would be VERY helpful if you did it one more time, even slower, and broke it up riff by riff, maybe even talking through each one. I know that's really tedious, but incredibly helpful for those of us still struggling to catch which strings you're picking. It's hard to watch both hands!
