Het einde van de film is ietwat goedkoop, misschien prozaïsch-voorspelbaar en abrupt. Een ander einde zou echter langdradig-saai geworden zijn. Omdat de 'almachtige' V.S. van N.A. geen verbond sluiten met Germania loopt alles spaak. Dit is natuurlijk een belachelijke suggestie en constatering na 30 jaar Germania. Zoveel gewonnen en nog meer bestreden dan wel doorstaan, voor geen kleintje vervaard ( Denk aan de 6.000.000! ), en dan zou men buigen voor dat samenraapseltje smeltpot-amerikanen?
I thought about a seqel : I called it Fatherland 2 Rise of the Reds and it's set after this film . The failure of the strategic alliance between the Reich and the USA has allowed the Soviet Union to expand unchecked and its new leader , Alexander Romanov has chosen this moment to attack . The sequel opens with the rebuilt Soviet war machine threatening to wipe the Greater Reich off the map .
2) Parts of the film suggests Germany won Stalingrad (the autopsy guy clearly fought there). The USSR would never give up Stalingrad unless USSR can offer no resistance against Germany. Furthermore, the fact Kennedy is agreeing ally with Hitler means the USA's lend lease policy was no longer in effect with USSR. With the war dragging on so long, it seems crazy on how USSR has the resources to overcome Hitler.
This film should be set in a parallel universe than protraying an alternative ending.
Despite allowing poetic licence, I still dislike how it provides an alternative history extremely detached from the important elements in real history which could be kept in an alternative history where Germany won.
1) Hitler most likely wouldn't have killed so many Jews (6-7 mil) during the war if he had won the war. The rise of killing of Jews coupled with Hitler's desperation to deal with Jews under the pressure of both Soviet and Allied both closing up to Berlin.
This was an interesting idea. The whole "because the alliance didn't go through the empire collapsed" was a bit of a stretch. Mabye if they had made it so that it was pretty obvious Russia was winning or something. I've heard this is based of a book so mabye they talk about it more in the book. Anyone know?
Lovely. Both main characters die in the end, the Soviets take over and control everything from China to the UK. Better than the Nazis? Perhaps. But I don't think the US can survive the resulting nuclear war.
Finished watching this movie for the fourth time. The first time I'd seen it was in the late 90's. Powerful film; a good speculation about the events. Evil will always get what it deserves. To the millions of innocent Jews who died at the hands of that lunatic: Kiddush Hashem. Baruch Hashem.

The movie is good,except the ending explanation,because Germania was a superpower and it wasn't going to collapse even if both America and Japan get out of alliance,so the only thing what could've happened is a WW3 with Germania vs America and again Russia.Then Germania would crush America and Russia will return its territories and the World would have had Germania and Russia instead of today's America and Russia.And I pefer Germania than America today!
I find this movie rather amusing, it was quite realistic at first (except for the majority of the architecture that would never look like that in Germania), but what happend in the end with Joe Kennedy Sr. is just so unrealistic it becomes silly.
I quite enjoyed this movie, thanks for uploading. I enjoy a good mystery/thriller with some alt.hist thrown in is just icing on the cake. Great visual style, great acting and good screenplay. I also found all the holocaust deniers' comments to be very funny. Nothing like YouTube brings sheds light on the worst among us.

You would be surprised. Empires such as the Soviet Union which had decades behind it, to the Romans which had lasted entire centuries collapsed relatively quickly. In the last year 3 more autocracies, like Nazi-Germany, fell in the Arab Spring. History proves that Empires rarely undergo some kind of gradual decline. Since this film is set in the 60's and the war ended in the 40's, a 20-ish year old Empire could collapse from such a small incident. Especially if it is an Autocracy.
@ProcrastiKing The Roan Empire took centuries to decline to irrelevancy, and even then it took the breaking up of the empire. The Soviet Union was really no longer a threat in the early 1980's. Collapsed in 1991. The Arab countries aren't collapsing, their governments are just changing.
The thing about Nazi Germany is that once Hitler would die it would likely go the way of Yugoslavia where the different factions within the country fight for power to the point of all out war. A dictatorship can only run as long as a new and strong dictator replaces the old one. It's unlikely that it would have outlasted the Soviet Union from our time.

I do not think this was a secret amongst leadership. While Japan committed war crimes in Nankin and greater China, they did not send nearly 30,000 Jews to Germany from Shanghai as requested per the Tripartite Pact. The Japanese knew what fate lied ahead of the Jews and so did other International leaders. Sooner or later, oil reserves from the Middle East would be needed to feed the trans-European regime. The US and her allies control the entire Pacific and with support from the British Commonwealth and South America, a virtual Oceania could form. What utter Smithsonian Institute, there were only 1 million Native American people north of the Rio Grande in 1492 theory tripe. I'd look at the burial mounds in or around the former land of the Iroquis nation of the upper mid-west. They could have supported a population at contact of 1 million plus in that area alone. Spanish explorers compared Mexico City in 1519 to Constantinople in terms of size, the largest city of its time.

If the Normandy landing would have failed the Russians would have ended their unstopable advance at the shores of the North Sea and the Atlantic, at the latest in the spring of 1946. Not the mention the very likely possibillity of the US deploying the A bomb.

@LocoGroove So did Henry Ford until he found out about the Holocaust. Remember until it actually happened there was no precedent for it (i.e. most people never knew about the Armenians killed in Turkey around the turn of the 19th/20th century), so it was really horrifying even to people who never cared much for Jews.
I believe Hitler would have not had an Alliance with the United States. He would have used England as a station to launch an attack on the United States. With the U.S. soldiers defeated at Normandy their resources would have buckled putting so much into it and Hitler would have defeated the United States with Russia soon to follow. While entertaining I feel Hitler would have taken another path and he probably would not have been alive in the 60's because he was really sick in 1945.
I agree that the book is much better but thanks for the upload. Personally I don't see the ending words of the film to very likely. Germany would in the 1960's already developed their own atomic bomb and they would probably had been able to launch a strike against the US. By then the US would have very little impact on the future of Europe.
There are much more complex layers in politics than simply dropping a bomb on one's enemies. Once those pictures became world knowledge, not everyone would be further supporting Nazi Germany. Germany certainly wouldn't have responded with a nuclear strike any more than the Soviet Union did in our history. The scenario is not so cut-and-dried. They may have entered into a Cold War against the US and other nations, but the collapse of the Reich would have happened eventually.

I honestly don't believe the US would have had any type of influence in Europe. In fact I belive Hitlers own version of the monroe-doctrine would have tied other parts of the world firmly to Germany. The greater German Reich would eventually have serious problems after Hitlers death though.
A good example would be to read Harry Turtledove's novel In The Presence of Mine Enemies. It details the Third Reich with far greater influence over the world than depicted here in Fatherland. In it, not only did the Nazis win World War II, but World War III happened, which allowed Germany to gain a tighter hold over other countries. It's worth taking a look.
@MrMugg actually both the us and nazi germany were nuclear powers..the reason wny the nazis were driving for peace in their cold war ws cos their economy and social structure was on the brink of collapse in the novel...they couldnt use nukes due to fearing the americans would retaliate..plus their are other world powers in the novel and reasons why if the holocaust got out then nazis woudl fall....the film diverges alot of things
@SiCGaming123 They did not stop - just delayed cos Norwegian heroes stopped heavy water getting through to Germany by destroyed a factory developing heavy water and blown up a ferry in which a train-load of heavy water aboard in middle of a Norwegian lake.
The bombs does not work without heavy water so had to build somewhere in Germany to make heavy water which could take long time to complete. By the time it was almost finished the factory was overran by US forces, thus the bomb was useless.
@SiCGaming123 They didn't stop research, but made it a low priority. The Nazis never came close to having the A-bomb and would have needed many more years (and a MUCH greater investment) to produce one. There was just no way that after '41 Germany could have managed it before the end of the war. As brave as it was the sabotage of the Norwegian heavy water production didn't have any real effect on the Nazi A-bomb project as it was moribund anyway.
@borgduck You must have watched a bad documentary. By 45 the Germans had barely managed a working atomic pile. From that point the US required many billions of dollars, tens of thousands working at factories free of enemy attack, and nearly 4 years to get an A-bomb. Thus, the Germans were many years away from their own bomb assuming they could have EVER managed it (since they faced enemy attack and a lack of proper funding).
@borgduck This isn't a debate -- I am just repeating known facts. Unless you are arguing that "close" to having the A-bomb means YEARS away then the Germans weren't close. Basically, they needed to make its development a top priority in 1940, but instead they went with other projects (such as von Braun's rockets) and thus lost any chance of having an atomic bomb by the end of the war.
@Ranillon They came close enough. It is believed that the only reason they didn't fully develop the bomb was because their own scientists sabotaged the efforts!
@borgduck Heisenberg, the lead German nuclear scientist, claimed this after the war, but this is generally considered to be an after-the-event convenient "reinterpretation" meant to make him look better to the Allies and history in general. In reality, his "sabotage" was likely more just errors on his part. For example, he grossly over-estimated how much nuclear material was needed to make a bomb, a miscalculation that made A-bomb development look harder than it was (and it was already hard!).
@Ranillon Well, the German (Nazis) scientists certainly helped towards America being the first to land on the Moon! And what about the V2 rockets, or Doodlebubs as the Londoners who were Blitzed by these "robots" called them?
@borgduck The V2 was certainly an advanced design ahead of anything the allies had, but without a powerful enough warhead (that is, without an a-bomb) it was nearly worthless. In fact, it just made for an insanely expensive way to drop less than 1% of effect of the allied bombing campaign on Germany. So, in that sense it was perhaps WORSE than useless (and thus a good thing for the allies). Germany would have been better off spending the time and money on more conventional weapons like tanks.
@Ranillon Even then, remember the fact that the allies, even by 19422 had tanks capable of destroying Germany's. The Sherman M4A1 armed with a 76mm M1 gun would soon slaughter all Nazi tanks, including the Panther. With HVAP (given mostly to the M-18 Hell Cats) these weapons could wipe out Panthers at 1,600 meters. As for the V2? Create a nuclear warhead and launch it on England.

2010:with The Third Reich now in the distant past, it is true that the ripple effect of ita presence is still being felt in world events. This film, while an interesting piece of fiction, pales in the true significance that was and still is Nazi Germany. In any case, I believe the world fortunate that The Fuhrer and his chiefs died or were captured. If they had not, I shudder to think of the ramifications on world history.

An interesting movie. In response to Iron 1871, no, you nor any other person is not responsible for anything they personally did not do. I am from the South, and while we do not pay taxes, we have been penalized in a large degree for simply declaring our independence. The pro-Southern view is not looked at in a positive light, as the victors write history. I am by no means a Nazi or anything like that. Every country has had genocide in its past- the USSR, Japan in China, Turkey with the Armenian
people, the US with its aboriginal people, and we could continue on in this vein for ever and ever. @PatrickvonPatey Only the German army signed the capitulation 1945 but not the Reich as whole. Only the German goverment (President Dönitz) were able to sign a state capitulation. He didnt sign. Keitel was the leader of the Wehrmacht who signed only for the German army. Thats why the war ended.
This movie just goes to show how pathetic and sick the Hitler regime was. I by no means blame Germany, but I do blame Hitler, and I can imagine what things people would have done to him if he was captured. Hitler had problems, and I can't see how anyone can ever forgive him. I lost family members in the war and the holocaust, all because of a sick person that magically came to power...
Remember out there the germans today are not to blame for what generations did before them. The United States Air Force had a nuclear bombing plan for Berlin If the bomb was ready on time. But the Russians had advanced too far into Germany for its use. If the Germans had held the Soviets at the Order River longer, say into August, than the Americans could had wiped Berlin from the map.
The bomb was not a racist weapon, any many have said. The U.S. was perfectly willing to use it on Germans and Italians as on the Japanese.
I still don't understand how Hitler's Reich collapsed in the movie's end. Germania had a perfectly stable situation. The Holocaust images would just lower the Us's willingness to make an Alliance. With Russia losing the war, the Reich would dominate probably 2/3 of the world, with so much valuable uranium. If there would be a war, Germania would win. Because they didn´t need to nuke germany... during this phase of the war, germanys cities were mostly ruins, where the use of a nuke would have been pure decoration. What they needed was a way to shock Japan, a country that wasn´t totally destroyed by war and gave good possibilities to set an example.

Het einde van de film is ietwat goedkoop, misschien prozaïsch-voorspelbaar en abrupt. Een ander einde zou echter langdradig-saai geworden zijn. Omdat de 'almachtige' V.S. van N.A. geen verbond sluiten met Germania loopt alles spaak. Dit is natuurlijk een belachelijke suggestie en constatering na 30 jaar Germania. Zoveel gewonnen en nog meer bestreden dan wel doorstaan, voor geen kleintje vervaard ( Denk aan de 6.000.000! ), en dan zou men buigen voor dat samenraapseltje smeltpot-amerikanen?

I thought about a seqel : I called it Fatherland 2 Rise of the Reds and it's set after this film . The failure of the strategic alliance between the Reich and the USA has allowed the Soviet Union to expand unchecked and its new leader , Alexander Romanov has chosen this moment to attack . The sequel opens with the rebuilt Soviet war machine threatening to wipe the Greater Reich off the map .

2) Parts of the film suggests Germany won Stalingrad (the autopsy guy clearly fought there). The USSR would never give up Stalingrad unless USSR can offer no resistance against Germany. Furthermore, the fact Kennedy is agreeing ally with Hitler means the USA's lend lease policy was no longer in effect with USSR. With the war dragging on so long, it seems crazy on how USSR has the resources to overcome Hitler.
This film should be set in a parallel universe than protraying an alternative ending.

Despite allowing poetic licence, I still dislike how it provides an alternative history extremely detached from the important elements in real history which could be kept in an alternative history where Germany won.
1) Hitler most likely wouldn't have killed so many Jews (6-7 mil) during the war if he had won the war. The rise of killing of Jews coupled with Hitler's desperation to deal with Jews under the pressure of both Soviet and Allied both closing up to Berlin.

I quite enjoyed this movie, thanks for uploading. I enjoy a good mystery/thriller with some alt.hist thrown in is just icing on the cake. Great visual style, great acting and good screenplay. I also found all the holocaust deniers' comments to be very funny. Nothing like YouTube brings sheds light on the worst among us.

You would be surprised. Empires such as the Soviet Union which had decades behind it, to the Romans which had lasted entire centuries collapsed relatively quickly. In the last year 3 more autocracies, like Nazi-Germany, fell in the Arab Spring. History proves that Empires rarely undergo some kind of gradual decline. Since this film is set in the 60's and the war ended in the 40's, a 20-ish year old Empire could collapse from such a small incident. Especially if it is an Autocracy.

The thing about Nazi Germany is that once Hitler would die it would likely go the way of Yugoslavia where the different factions within the country fight for power to the point of all out war. A dictatorship can only run as long as a new and strong dictator replaces the old one. It's unlikely that it would have outlasted the Soviet Union from our time.

I do not think this was a secret amongst leadership. While Japan committed war crimes in Nankin and greater China, they did not send nearly 30,000 Jews to Germany from Shanghai as requested per the Tripartite Pact. The Japanese knew what fate lied ahead of the Jews and so did other International leaders. Sooner or later, oil reserves from the Middle East would be needed to feed the trans-European regime. Moreover, so many languages and cultures would not maintain their hetrogeneity.

What utter Smithsonian Institute, there were only 1 million Native American people north of the Rio Grande in 1492 theory tripe. I'd look at the burial mounds in or around the former land of the Iroquis nation of the upper mid-west. They could have supported a population at contact of 1 million plus in that area alone. Spanish explorers compared Mexico City in 1519 to Constantinople in terms of size, the largest city of its time.

Very unlikely story.
If the Normandy landing would have failed the Russians would have ended their unstopable advance at the shores of the North Sea and the Atlantic, at the latest in the spring of 1946. Not the mention the very likely possibillity of the US deploying the A bomb.

I believe Hitler would have not had an Alliance with the United States. He would have used England as a station to launch an attack on the United States. With the U.S. soldiers defeated at Normandy their resources would have buckled putting so much into it and Hitler would have defeated the United States with Russia soon to follow. While entertaining I feel Hitler would have taken another path and he probably would not have been alive in the 60's because he was really sick in 1945.

I agree that the book is much better but thanks for the upload. Personally I don't see the ending words of the film to very likely. Germany would in the 1960's already developed their own atomic bomb and they would probably had been able to launch a strike against the US. By then the US would have very little impact on the future of Europe.

There are much more complex layers in politics than simply dropping a bomb on one's enemies. Once those pictures became world knowledge, not everyone would be further supporting Nazi Germany. Germany certainly wouldn't have responded with a nuclear strike any more than the Soviet Union did in our history. The scenario is not so cut-and-dried. They may have entered into a Cold War against the US and other nations, but the collapse of the Reich would have happened eventually.

@Elfrunner Of course it's not that simple however Germany would not have shared the faith of Soviet Union. Germany would have had a much more solid ground to dominate Europe in a way Soviet Union never did.
I honestly don't believe the US would have had any type of influence in Europe. In fact I belive Hitlers own version of the monroe-doctrine would have tied other parts of the world firmly to Germany. The greater German Reich would eventually have serious problems after Hitlers death though.

A good example would be to read Harry Turtledove's novel In The Presence of Mine Enemies. It details the Third Reich with far greater influence over the world than depicted here in Fatherland. In it, not only did the Nazis win World War II, but World War III happened, which allowed Germany to gain a tighter hold over other countries. It's worth taking a look.

@SiCGaming123 They did not stop - just delayed cos Norwegian heroes stopped heavy water getting through to Germany by destroyed a factory developing heavy water and blown up a ferry in which a train-load of heavy water aboard in middle of a Norwegian lake.
The bombs does not work without heavy water so had to build somewhere in Germany to make heavy water which could take long time to complete. By the time it was almost finished the factory was overran by US forces, thus the bomb was useless.

The Nazis never came close to having the A-bomb and would have needed many more years (and a MUCH greater investment) to produce one. There was just no way that after '41 Germany could have managed it before the end of the war. As brave as it was the sabotage of the Norwegian heavy water production didn't have any real effect on the Nazi A-bomb project as it was moribund anyway.

From that point the US required many billions of dollars, tens of thousands working at factories free of enemy attack, and nearly 4 years to get an A-bomb. Thus, the Germans were many years away from their own bomb assuming they could have EVER managed it (since they faced enemy attack and a lack of proper funding).

@borgduck This isn't a debate -- I am just repeating known facts. Unless you are arguing that "close" to having the A-bomb means YEARS away then the Germans weren't close. Basically, they needed to make its development a top priority in 1940, but instead they went with other projects (such as von Braun's rockets) and thus lost any chance of having an atomic bomb by the end of the war.

@borgduck Heisenberg, the lead German nuclear scientist, claimed this after the war, but this is generally considered to be an after-the-event convenient "reinterpretation" meant to make him look better to the Allies and history in general. In reality, his "sabotage" was likely more just errors on his part. For example, he grossly over-estimated how much nuclear material was needed to make a bomb, a miscalculation that made A-bomb development look harder than it was (and it was already hard!).

@borgduck The V2 was certainly an advanced design ahead of anything the allies had, but without a powerful enough warhead (that is, without an a-bomb) it was nearly worthless. In fact, it just made for an insanely expensive way to drop less than 1% of effect of the allied bombing campaign on Germany. So, in that sense it was perhaps WORSE than useless (and thus a good thing for the allies). Germany would have been better off spending the time and money on more conventional weapons like tanks.

@Ranillon Even then, remember the fact that the allies, even by 19422 had tanks capable of destroying Germany's. The Sherman M4A1 armed with a 76mm M1 gun would soon slaughter all Nazi tanks, including the Panther. With HVAP (given mostly to the M-18 Hell Cats) these weapons could wipe out Panthers at 1,600 meters. As for the V2? Create a nuclear warhead and launch it on England.

@Ranillon Also note the fact that the only tank capable of saving the Reich was the highly mobile, excellent mobility/reliability and easily produced Panther 3s as Stugs and Panzer IVs. They were good tanks - not shitty developed failures like the Tiger or Konigstiger....

2010:with The Third Reich now in the distant past, it is true that the ripple effect of ita presence is still being felt in world events. This film, while an interesting piece of fiction, pales in the true significance that was and still is Nazi Germany. In any case, I believe the world fortunate that The Fuhrer and his chiefs died or were captured. If they had not, I shudder to think of the ramifications on world history.
All in all though, an entertaining film. Thanks, Hellwrath!

i will always respect Germany for coming close to taking over the world, as i would of any other nation, i can't wait for the day the middle eastern countries like iraq and afghistan take over the world, and muslims are already taking over europe by out breading europeans, i hope iraq gains nuclear power, that will make you wish all you whites that Adolf Hitler had won, but i guess we will have to wait and find out, enjoy the crap world that's being created because hitler lost

An interesting movie. In response to Iron 1871, no, you nor any other person is not responsible for anything they personally did not do. I am from the South, and while we do not pay taxes, we have been penalized in a large degree for simply declaring our independence. The pro-Southern view is not looked at in a positive light, as the victors write history. I am by no means a Nazi or anything like that. Every country has had genocide in its past- the USSR, Japan in China, Turkey with the Armenian

It is human nature to kill, whether or not it is right or wrong, and the reason Germany is singled out is simply because they went after a group of people that have much political and economic power. @PatrickvonPatey Only the German army signed the capitulation 1945 but not the Reich as whole. Only the German goverment (President Dönitz) were able to sign a state capitulation. He didnt sign. Keitel was the leader of the Wehrmacht who signed only for the German army. Thats why the war ended.

This movie just goes to show how pathetic and sick the Hitler regime was. I by no means blame Germany, but I do blame Hitler, and I can imagine what things people would have done to him if he was captured. Hitler had problems, and I can't see how anyone can ever forgive him. I lost family members in the war and the holocaust, all because of a sick person that magically came to power...

Remember out there the germans today are not to blame for what generations did before them. Many germans didnt want the nazy regime, but had to follow orders and pretend they liked it, or else they would be put in jail as a traitor. To blame the germans today for what they did at that time during the world war ll is totally insane. We must all fight against tendency that has the face of nazism or similar system that wants to suppress people. Scientology is a system with similar tendency.

The United States Air Force had a nuclear bombing plan for Berlin If the bomb was ready on time. But the Russians had advanced too far into Germany for its use. If the Germans had held the Soviets at the Order River longer, say into August, than the Americans could had wiped Berlin from the map.
The bomb was not a racist weapon, any many have said. The U.S. was perfectly willing to use it on Germans and Italians as on the Japanese.
Anything to save U.S lives and end the war.

I still don't understand how Hitler's Reich collapsed in the movie's end. Germania had a perfectly stable situation. The Holocaust images would just lower the Us's willingness to make an Alliance. With Russia losing the war, the Reich would dominate probably 2/3 of the world, with so much valuable uranium. If there would be a war, Germania would win. Yes, I know I'm gong into huge depth of the movie.

Yes, I agree with you. Germany could always come up with some clever reason for why March- a bitter traitor to his country with a dead-ended career, in my book- was a bloody liar. And even if the US believed everything he and Maguire told them, that wouldn't change the fact that a 75-year old Hitler reigned supreme over Germany and Europe.

Because they didn´t need to nuke germany... during this phase of the war, germanys cities were mostly ruins, where the use of a nuke would have been pure decoration. What they needed was a way to shock Japan, a country that wasn´t totally destroyed by war and gave good possibilities to set an example.
