thank you for this tutorial, i've been looking for the translation of the word "help!" because i often heard this in taiwan dramas, but it seems there's a missing syllable? i usually hear them say "jiu ming (ya?) or (yao?)" can someone clarify this for me. thanks.

is 110 and 119 only in Shanghai?
would the same numbers be used, for example, in Hong Kong or Taiwan?

Hong Kong and Taiwan are different! But you can use 110 and 119 anywhere in China!

My tutor told me its because in phone numbers the use yao because yi gets mistaken for something else. Can't remember what.

jiu ming means "save my life" literally, it is used when someone is in danger!
Normally "help" in Chinese is: bang/ bang zhu, for example:
ni ke yi bang/ bang zhu wo ma? = Can you help me?
