I have since been a part of the Palace Theater in many ways, & CATS was by far, the best production I have seen live, apart from WICKED, but those in and of themselves are two different entities one cannot compare what Andrew Lloyd Webber, learn to spell it right, would have done when he first created this masterpiece and now. Cathie Sheridan is one of the most talented and professional people I know, that's all I have to say on that!
I think I would like to return the commentary to the commercial, not the show. How do ya'll like the commercial *itself*? The person created it using the video footage he shot, and recorded music from the soundtrack.
and Cathie, the lady who played our Grizabella, and she had one of the most beautiful voices I have heard. She did not belt the entire song, but she sang it wonderfully. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, as I am to mine that Cathie was a fine Grizabella.
To Yars007- Paraphrasing Dorothy Parker - "too many kudos for too little talent". Get real. Shows featuring local school kids will always be a sellout. Classmates, relatives, friends, teachers, all attend. Compare it to attendance at a football game involving the local school. When I saw the show, most of the attendees were not necessarily theatre afficionados, but relatives, friends, etc. I was one of them.
as far as the audience being mostly "friends, relatives, etc", i have been in many other shows at this theatre that didn't sell out at all-with casts over twice this large. ...and yes, i'm in this production as well. though all critiques are appreciated, it's best to keep in mind that this is a community theatre with a cast of volunteers. we work hard and have a blast and i think the sold out crowds and standing ovations speak for themselves.
I loved the show. Thought the cast was great and Grizabella was mesmerizing. Yes, dance in a community show can be hit or miss as it was in this case, but they worked hard, looked and sounded great and it is selling out every show. In all ways, a success for the Palace.
To each his own. Some people have higher standards. Your money could be better spent. Buy the dvd of Elaine Page to see how this amateur production smells in comparison. It does not come even close.
I have to disagree whole-heartedly with the two negative reviews below. I was absolutely blown away by this show, and floored that a community theater group could actually pull it off. Plus, being right up at the stage and having the cats interact with the audience directly was engrossing. Definitely a must see...before it's gone!
I saw this version at the Palace last week. It was a letdown for the most part. Two characters stood out-Rumpleteaser & Mungojerry. The rest ranged from ok to bad. But I give them an A for effort. The real bummer was Grizabella. Memory is supposed to be the showstopper in Cats. This song was performed without emotion, passion or feeling. At the end of the song, the audience should feel sympathy & pain for the old cat. I felt nothing. Neither did my friends.
"The real bummer was Grizabella." "I felt nothing." I've seen the show a few times and I've watched the people around me cry when she exits at the end of act 1, cry when she sings the final, very powerful, Memory. "This song was performed without emotion, passion or feeling." Those are words of a very bitter person. Too bad...Perhaps you auditioned for this role?
Such foolishness. Try insulting me for my opinion and I might add that of others. As far as "auditioning for this role" - I do not think a guy would make an acceptable Grizabella, but maybe better than this one...are you the gal who played the part??? You are no belter.

No, I'm not the gal, rather a theatre afficionado...having performed for over 30 years. As I wrote earlier, I've seen the show a few times, as I have students in the show, and I must say it's refreshing to see the song sung beautifully, not screamed, and with such raw emotion. Perhaps you missed the part in this 'gal's' bio where she sings to a friend who died. I've seen her tears every time I've seen the show and I'm offended by your comments on her behalf.
Resent on...that is your prerogative, as is mine to criticize what I consider a bad performance. Incidentally, this part was originated by Betty Buckley, one of the foremost belters in the country. I do not consider one who belts as one who screams. Your experience as a theater goer does not impress me. you should know better.

This role was originated in London in 81 by Elaine Page (being called in after Dame Judi Dench tore her achilles tendon)...Betty Buckley recreated it when it opened on Broadway in 82...Laurie Beechman has the honor of the longest run as Grizabella on Broadway. Impresed yet?
I never said belting was screaming; I teach belting...HEALTHY belting...it can be done without hurting your voice. I'd like to hear Betty sing now....
Buckley originated the song in the US. All those women you mentioned are true diva belters, a name which you have conferred on yourself. Furthermore, knowing the history of a play does not qualify you as an expert on what constitutes a great performance. No I am not impressed by anything you have written.

I'm not sure how you originate a song in a country, but...yes, I wear my username proudly...and being an actor makes me an expert. Perhaps you should try climbing up on a stage instead of attempting to tear this one down.
I think the quality of a performance is better judged by the audience. I am part of the audience who viewed this abortion of a fine play. And think again, if you really believe you are an "expert". I do believe that performers work hard at their art, but performances should not be judged by the hard work of the performers, but by the effect of such work. Your credentials are tarnished.
Whoa ---this commercial is well done, but after seeing the actual play, I can only say Webber would never get this show to broadway with this cast. Stage crowded. Some dancers good, others mediocre, and some bad. Grizabella a disappointment. Sorry, if this critique hurts, but that is how I saw it. This was not one of the Palace's better shows. They were much too ambitious in attempting this, as the dancing in Cats must be superb to be successful. This was strictly an amateur production.
Congrats on being the first person to comment! Thanks for the kind words. This production is still going strong and may extend after selling out every single show on our second weekend.
I liked the creepy gothic approaches of the CATS ads better.
