Ah the Golden Hare is magic...so beautiful and so wonderfully Irish, I would love to be to paint a picture that is about the golden hare. I amazed at how beautiful they all are on the island,
I can only repeat what has already been said. Your presentation is excellent so lets hope BBC's Springwatch will employ you as you are a big improvement on that lot. I am a member of the hare presentation trust and so this is what drew me to your video. Your irish voice is beautiful. You are welcome to take a look at some of my carrion crow videos on utube.
Rathlin is the only place you can see Hare living, unmolested these days. Ask an Islander and they will tell you their are no hare on the Island. By their denial they have kept the potchers and guns off them. This has not helped their cause.
If you like photography, wildlife or both you should visit Rathlin Island and meet Tom, my Uncle T. He is inspirational, charming and likeable, as glimsed in the video. What you see of him is just the tip of the iceberg.
Thanks for you comments Andrew. It was lovely to meet your uncle T on Rathlin. We were very fortunate to meet just by chance and spend some time together. We are making a fine art print on the Golden Hare, and a curlew that we saw on the island shortly. Your uncle T has given us some photos for colour reference. Watch this space:)
This is fascinating. He's got such an engaging personality, you are so very sweet. I love the beginning where you're both on that pretty road, the gentle breeze blowing, the cloudless sky above, it seems I'm there too...
Thanks very much FK. Can you believe that weather in Ireland? It was such a beautiful evening, on a lovely island. It's great to have the video to remind us of that.
When talking to Tom about where his interest in photography came from, I wasn't expecting the answer he gave us. He did good.
That's a sad story about his brother. When my grandmother's house caught on fire she was dragged out before she could get the family photos. The story is she bit a fireman in the arm that wouldn't let her go back in for them.
Chopin 65, thanks for your comments. The story about your grandmother shows how much photographs are valued. Will that change with the new digital methods of documenting our life histories?
The new digital is a new format. That is the big change. How long can it last on line? Will someone house it on a flash drive somewhere and then it will show up a hundred years later as some rare document? Libraries here in America are becoming digital depositories in the same way they once housed books. Very interesting questions. This man is doing important work though. Thanks.
Fantastic!! I really enjoyed this. I know exactly the feeling he was describing about that moment with the hare. Brilliant interview you've done here. 5/5 :D Jess
Thanks DW. You are right, Tom is a brilliant photographer. It was a pleasure talking to him about his work and what motivated him to begin his career in photography.
Hi Clare--Wonderful interview of Tom McDonnell. So glad he moved out to the island so he can take such BEAUTIFUL pictures :) I cannot wait to see the Irish countryside :D
It's footage like this that makes me glad Al Gore invented the internet. Not only was the videography great, but the interview seemed seamless and had a good amount of depth.
Okay now I have to find a map because the only location mentioned that I knew was Belfast.
I was glad he spoke Canon-ese and did you get a look at that lens!?!?!?! I think I have Pentax envy! (can you say that on the net?)
The beautiful Golden Hare...I ask the Angels to protect them and all the hares on the Island!

Wow! This is the very first blue eyed Golden Hare I've seen! It is indeed an unusual bunny! Thanks to the sheer brilliance of Tom McDonnell!
The seal floating and sunning himself was too adorable! Next time I'm over..I'm planning on a day trip to Rathlin Island.
Thank you SO much for posting!
