  • @ILackCreativity1 Why do you think it was about Phil? I love him as well, but I feel like this was just a general stab at all folk/protest artists.

  • Thank you so much!

  • Lehrer hits the nail on the head with enough force to shoot the damn thing straight through the drywall and out the other side. Can't take protest folk songs seriously.

  • brillant cheers The Makem Folk Singer

  • Somehow I should be offended (because I LOVE protest songs), but I'm not. He completely nailed it, and his sarcasm is endearing.

  • niceone, c heers Dave

  • Oh my god this sounds like Roy Zimmerman. Well, he sounds like this.

  • Great send-up of the silly pretentiousness of "protest songs". Why vote when you can whine?

  • I'm sure I recognize this tune...Anyone know what it is?

  • i like tom lehre but this song is wierd in a funny way i like this song he is clever he should write about the tea party opps maybe there is a coffee party instead

  • @novascotia2010 This is old school. Tom Lehrer quit political humor when Nixon was elected. Said it was getting too easy.

  • rhyme...Im sorry rhymn

  • I love it!

  • Long live Tom Lehrer, the greatest American satirist of the 20th century (and a damn fine musician, too!)

  • 5 people have malfunctioning mice

srsly what is not to like?!

  • Thanks for posting

  • For, by Mr Lehrer's standards, one of the less polemic numbers, and specifically directed against the "hard core", this side salad of stills was a most fitting accoutrement.

  • I'm in love with "Other pictures: various sources". Yes, thank you, we got that^^

Also, "he won all the battles, but we had all the best songs"^^

  • "The war against Franco" was closer in time to the first performance of this song than we are now. Wow.

  • But the introduction itself was part of the original recording, I'm just keeping it real :)

  • @willspear1564 Good call - the introduction is an important part of the fun of the song.

  • The introduction is so funny and so smart.

  • @ Sam

Typo. Meant to say 51. Muh bad.

  • OMG! That's awesome!!

  • xkcd pic! awesome! LOVE Lehrer

  • I do believe this is aimed at the Flobots.

Even if it was written like 15 years ago. XD

  • 15? 50...

  • KriegerVII, ever heard of the Beat Generation?

  • More like 40 years ago.

  • Ready, aim, sing! Love it!

  • This is so what I used to be - and still am.

Sometimes, when I tune into one of these Tom Lehrer songs, I'm amazed to discover that we're still fighting the same battle, more than 40 years later.

"When will we ever learn... When will we ever learn?"'

  • Who is keeping you from learning?

  • I thought his introduction was better than the song.

  • this is brilliant!

  • The tune don't have to be cleverrrrrrr and it don't matter if you put a couple of few extra syllables into a lineeeeeeeeeee! Best lyrics EVER!

  • @EddieTrooper22 It sounds more ethnic if it ain't good English and it don't even gotta rhyme...excuse me, rhyne...

  • The bit about Franco is hilarious. Don't think I'm ever gonna be able to listen to Christy Moore's Viva La Quinte Brigada without snickering now...

  • lol xD

  • I love the old protest songs and this got me to laugh out loud a few times, thanks for posting

  • Ace As Good As The Rest Of His Songs.

  • So funny and to the point! Thank you :-)

  • Oh, I'm not an expert. Posted some Lehrer songs with live footage that I liked, but I sincerely wish that he'd played "The Folk song army" on the show I've planted on Youtube. Thank you again. This IS truly a gem :-)

  • Oh, thank you very much!

  • Thank you for commenting 6funswede, it's awesome having a Lehrer video liked by the Youtube Lehrer Expert

  • @6funswede I'd love to see an official version. I hope that is in the works.

  • Heard about this song this morning on a repeat of Car Talk on NPR!

  • Good marketing techniques, eh?

  • Tom lehrer rocks great song

  • Thank you very much!
