I heard paul simon sing this the other day on the radio and thought this could be a bob marley song, not just cause of the obvious reggae riffs but the lyrics and delivery. And here I find ziggy singing it.
@treefrog2108 Paul Simon did write and record the original...and he recorded it in Kingston using the musicians and back up singers of Jimmy Cliff, hence the cultural influence.
@lilnip67 with Ziggy singing it it's like the song has gone full circle, as it was orginal a Jamiacan tune that Paul Simon wrote the lyrics of this song to.
I've been following reggae for 41 years, ever since I began teaching in Handsworth Birmingham. I've always beleived that this song was practically the first reggae classic written by a white artist, with the possible exception of Holly Holy - Neil Diamond.
love your call.....couldn't agree more....love the Paul, love the Bob, love the Ziggy....i amglad i stumbled upon this. Jack Johnson does a mean mini-cover of this too, you should check out as well.
@8269998 Judge Dread recorded Big Six and Big Seven in 1972. Those were the first reggae songs written by a white artist. He even reach the top 10 in Jamaica and he out sold Bob Marley in the early 70's. Also he didn't write just one reggae song, he was a reggae artist. He was so good that Jamaicans thought he was from Jamaica.
I really like Ziggys version, but what a great song by Paul Simon.
-The song was one of the earliest by a white musician to feature prominent elements of reggae. The title of the song has its origin in a chicken-and-egg dish called "Mother and Child Reunion" that Paul Simon saw on a Chinese restaurant's menu. But the song was written for a dog of Simon's that was run over and killed.
i love both versions of the song in their own rite. i like this one because its so up beat with its reggae beats. i love the original because its so calm and sweet sounding.
This was on the Simpsons in two episodes when Homer's mom visits him, including the episode when she dies it plays in the backround of the montage for her.
Pretty good video/song, but the main reason I am posting is to protest all the negative vibrations out there! If you have ever seen Ziggy live then you know he is talented, and Dragonfly is one of the best albums of the decade in any genre. Ziggy covers a lot of songs from different artists and has a great range of musical influences...of course he will always be compared to Bob but he should be judged upon his own, very worthwhile, merit.
@robteasley I saw Ziggy in the 1990's in concert opening for the B-52's and let me tell you, he and his band blew everyone away. Talent is not the word your looking for. The voice of god, yes.
He is a music legend. He was formerly with Simon and Garfunkel and together they made classic songs like Mrs. Robinson and the Sound of Silence. As a solo artist, he made songs such as The Obvious Child and the album Graceland, in which he teamed with South African artist.
Paul Simon wrote a lot of hits for others and he was the only composer of the Simon & Garfunkel hits. He also recorded songs for example Randy Newman " He's got the blues this boy "
What I was going on to say is... Ziggy is not the first, nor will he be the last, to exploit the family treasure. Ziggy is a rare talent but relies way too much on the influence of his father.
One point of interest is.. The reason this song is so memorable is the fact that it was originally recorded by Paul simon in Jamaica using Jimmy Cliffs backing band.. Including Neville Hinds on keyboards, Hucks Brown on guitar and Whitney Houstons mother Cissy.
Ziggy Marley has a sound of his own and his recognition is more than that of being the son of Bob Marley. There are ground rules (so to speak) for making reggae music - love, unity and righteousness. Ziggy Marley is a great musician on his own credit. I'm grateful for the sons and daughters Bob Marley left behind, so their music & their message can reach many more people & many more hearts. Exploit - Rastafari does not practice such a thing. Your comments are better left unspoken.
I personally think this cover is very good. I don't think he ruined it at all. Yes, the original is better, but paying homage to someone, particularly Paul Simon, should really be applauded...
Fantastic... just fantastic. I would LOVE to have a clean recording of this rendition on MP3 (or anything else). As good as the original version (maybe just the tiniest bit better?)
I assume this clip is from a Paul Simon tribute -- perhaps the Songwriter's Hall Of Fame? This song is a case in point about why people were stupid in 1986, giving PS a hard time about recording an album of South African-style music. He was on the Reggae bandwagon in the early 70s, along with McCartney, Clapton, and others. Excellent version, as expected!
I agree the original is better. I'm not sure about the slowed down tempo or reduction of harmonised BGVs on the verses. Plus he fluffs the words on the 2nd verse. Haha. Im such a geek. And proud of it when it comes to Mr Simon.
In fact Paul Simon's original version was done reggae style - it's a great record and worth checking out (it's on his self-titled 1972 album and also the awesome 19-track greatest hits)

If there was ever an artist who survived on the good name of his father it is this young man.
Robert Nesta had more talent in his toe than his son Ziggy.
