We were doing an analysis of this song about a week ago in music theory class. I can't listen to it enough times. It's the most beautiful thing I've ever heard, and the simplicity of it is one of the things that makes it so sweet and sentimental sounding. <3
@Celeste707 I agree with u a beautiful piece of music and I'm no music expert but to characterize it as simple is way off the mark. I believe when Pathetique was published there was consternation among his peers and contemporaries. It was seen as breaking too many musical norms/rules and precepts & even considered "too complicated". The piece to begin with was even shunned. The thing about Beethoven we need to remember is that most things he did were ground breaking and never done before.
@thepumpdontwork Oh yes, of course! I didn't mean it like that lol. I meant that the sound of it, the melody itself presents a certain beautiful simplicity. Not the composition itself. Beethoven was a genius in all he composed, and I know there are many works of his that have given me a very tough time to analyze, they're so complex. ^^; With all of the mode mixture, secondary functions, and Neapolitan chords, there's a lot going on besides simple diatonic progressions. =)
@thepumpdontwork lol I don't think I'm any league ahead of anyone when it comes to conversing about music. I'm always glad to talk classical masterpieces with those who want to discuss it. ^^ And thank you! =)
I love this song. I took piano lessons until I was 13. Now I'm 43 and just started playing again (for fun this time.) I stumbled on an excerpt of this song in one of my old books, learned the first part and then hunted down the rest of movement #2 on the internet. I've spent all summer trying to learn and memorize it! I love the deep harmonies and there is just a small hint of sadness I think. I still haven't made it all the way through without wiping out somewhere, but I'll get there!
It was actually written for his friend who was dying, the song goes from sad to happy because its a metaphor of the man dying and then his journey to heaven. This is my favorite piece of music in the world <3
It is not sad to me either. On the contrary it is the human spirit encountering, rising to, and finally overcoming those dark forces that would try to diminish us. Beeethoven was going deaf when he wrote this and he knew it. The end of sound for him. I hear him saying, "No, not even deafness can destroy my music". To me it is poignantly triumphant.
Listening to Beethoven always intensifies the music playing in my head. Normally, I love that, but I'm out of manuscript paper. A lot of people lust after absolute pitch, and there are supposed to be ways to develop it too. For those who want to, be warned that it can make it hard to sleep haha.
@pgriffo1 , I'm a rock guitarist too. So many people seem to underestimate us. I remember being turned away from a theory class. I got in the 2nd time and ended up correcting the teacher lol.
@Thewhitewookiee I don't find it a sad song either. I think it's a song full of hope, it's like a dawn of something, a new beginning. HAHAHA. /mymyimagination ;)
To me it communicates a poignant sadness, mixed with triumph, in a weird way. It's emotionally complex, and it depends upon the performance. I don't think one could say that it's just 'a sad song'.
@hellokittyrulz2011 Well this is called a movement and there are three movements in this piece. Putting them together is the Sonata Pathetique. Anyone correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think I am! I'm learning this piece. It's short but a lot of notes!
@pine2apple i know that when "a movement and there are three movements in this piece. Putting them together is the Sonata Pathetique". but thats not what i ment ..... i ment like is each

BTW, my favorite classical piece, preceding Air in G String. So beautiful :').
@06parkcu Beethoven was always in love....actually he was always out of love heartbroken or couldn't get the girl. A tortured genius. I'd say it helped his music.
it's not about sad it's about the beauty in it
