His flute came sooo...close to the music stand at times... Almost hitting it. Do professionals get concerned if their instrument hit something lightly and get a scratch? Or am I just over-protecting mine?
@mrbean12312 It's the same principle no matter what instrument you play. To play so virtuosically on whatever you put your hands to is going to take yearsssssssss.
While this may not be the most amazing interpretation of the Carmen Fantasie, to say that Galway's technique, tone, and musicality fall anything short of superb is true, unabashed ignorance. To make these ridiculous contrasts with these other phenomenal flutists is completely absurd! Yes you are entitled to your opinions, but that does not give you the right to tear him down. He's already proven himself to the world, which is why he's revered internationally despite your ignorant comments.
We should remember that JG is probably passed his technical best (still no slouch!)...listen to the rest when they are 70! I do think he may have overpopularised a bit. I prefer to remember him live from the 70s....when he definitely brought the instrument to a stage whereon the younger can flourish. I might have a preference for Rampal on Baroque Classical repertoire or maybe Wm Bennett.
I am galway fan all the way ... I absolutely love his playing !!! Robinson said she her piano playing was a dismal failure .. and I do think her flute playing is nice but not my cup of tea. Rampal has a nice tone but I think that his techinique lacks percision. I guess I am just a galway type of flutist.
There is no shame in having an opinion, J. Galway just is not an outstanding flutist. There is no finesse, not even a great sound., there is power and vibrato. Some like that, and that's ok. But try listening to Rampal, Bouriakov, Robison, Pahud. And notice the difference. They have technique and superior beauty and immense joy in their play.
@Nessjes Shame on you. James Galway has far superior sound quality, tonecolor, and technique. He is on a higher level of musicality than, Bouriakov, Robison, Pahud and Rampal. Especially Pahud. His playing lacks power.
@RuneBeast324 I really don't want to argue, and I won't, I just want to share my thoughts. James Galway is undoubtedly an excellent flute player, but I am not really fond of his tone. He has an excellent technique for sure, though. And when you say Pahud's playing lacks power, what do you mean? That he doesn't have an annoying vibrato like Galways?
That was three months ago when I was listening to a frayed recording of Pahud's preformance. I found another video of him, and he sounds very nice. I actually now respect and enjoy his playing.
@RuneBeast324 Yes he's one of my favourites! I don't know why people keep arguing about this so much and can't accept the different tastes of people. Anyways, in my opinion Galway managed to make flute much more popular, so did Jean-Pierre Rampal. But the way I see it, Pahud has a better tone and feeling.. ;)
Nessjes and ohflautistpleaze, because you cannot accept that someone is possible to play with amazing perfection in any way, you are saying a stupidities and nonsence about One and Only THE BEST FLAUTIST EVER SIR JAMES GALWAY!!!
10 yrs ago, I felt the same that Robinson's interpretation was more elegant, like singing and emotional. However, 10 years later, when I played this piece again, I felt that Sir Galway played Carmen with the interpretation of the " flute tone", which is also impressive. I would say they are totally different, but I really love both. :-)
He plays loud because he blows directly into the mouth hole, which technically is not what is taught. Somehow he is able to maintain excellent control. The downside to his playing loud is the excessive amount to air used, which impacts his breathing in certain pieces (i.e.: Mozart Flute Harp Concerto 299). Also playing loud can be too harsh on the ear and gives too much away too soon (deminishing the climax of the piece).
No he doesn't. He plays across the mouthhole, like any normal flute player. I think he very slightly voices each note (a low growling sound in the throat much like a jazz flute player - which amplifies the volume) with conscious lower-tummy pressure. Also, with a very finely adjusted flute (perfectly adjusted pads and such) you can push the thing a lot more. Plus, mentally visualizing yourself as an opera singer (rather than a flute player) helps.
Oh this is wonderful its a love song. A Gypsy boy falls in love with Carmen. Just out side the walls of Seville in Spain. Her father tries to stop this romance from happening. He didn,t have any luck. Wonderful and James Galway and the piano player where wonderful. Sorry to be a bit cheeky but he is the best Flautist in the World.
sir james you are the best im your no.1 fan in the philippines,i also play this piece.i hope i will meet you someday and learn technics from you coz you are the no.1 flutist in the universe......jojo of the philippines
James Galway is AMAZING, no doubt about that, but this piece can really get annoying at certain parts (as a flutist myself), i cut some parts when i performed it. It really becomes a..."yeah, i get it, u can play!" kind of piece, while some parts are just amazing! weird piece this carmen is...but galway plays it amazing. (that's my two cents on this piece)
So amazing. Sir James Galway can produce a louder sound compared to other flutist. Not only that, whenever he is playing loud, he still maintains the brightness and precision of every note. One of the traits of a great flutist. No doubt he is the best in the world
the piano is distracting to me.. just a bit too loud

So sorry, but I don't like Mr Galway's flute playing.
Please listen to Ms Robison's version of Borne's fantasy: it is so much more elegant, so much more communicative and moving.
Mr Galway just hits you with excessive power and vibrato, I find there is no real joy. So sorry for all the Galway fans.
