@Demrush my turtle was shy when I first got him, when you have them more and more, that shyness will go away, just give them some time. (mine took about two months to loss the shyness.
hey my wood made enclousure is 3 feet and 5 inches long the width is 1 foot 10 inches its this tall 1 foot 2 inches tall is it big for my rt? the rt is 6 inches long 4 inches wide its a male is it big for it? it has half a log play sand and bark wood bedding mix wich is about 3 inches tall a skinny water dish a lid for food dish a siber tooth with sand and wood on it so it could bathe in the uvb light im thinkign of gettign a red foot tortise or another rt or i shoudnt get another one?
That tortoise has an easy fucking life. Gets to sleep all day in a comfy place, become a youtube celebrity and eat delicious foodz (for a tortoise). If there is reincarnation, I think I know what I wanna be if I fail the nirvana test
I bought my Russian Tortoise from Petco about 8 months ago and have been having shyness problems with him since. I don't know if it's because he was wild caught or how the store treated him but I can't walk anywhere past his tub without him pushing all his air out and retracting his head.
I hand feed him sometimes and let him wander around my living room a few times a week.
Is it in their nature to be that cautious or did my little fellow have a bad upbringing?
@Demrush I have problems with myn as well. I got it from PetCo a week ago and I can still return it as it hasn't been 15 days. I purchased another and the new ones is better as it's not shy at all. Maybe the creator of this video can help us out on how he gets his turtle to do this?
Does a russian tortoise acknowledge its keeper as friendly animals when being fed out of its keeper's hands, or it doesn't really care and noms noms at whatever food it wants?
Russian Tortoises (Testudo horsfieldi) are the smallest tortoise species commonly available to keepers. This makes them one of the most sought after...They are found in the green areas along the edges of rocky hillsides and deserts of south eastern Russia, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Um. When my family had two pet tortoise's, we had them in a big fishtank with some water and some rocks thingies to climb on.. ;o is a cage better or wha <.<?
I can't get my Russian Tortoise to eat anything but mixed vegetables! I know they are not the healthiest for him by he doesn't eat anything else that I offer him and I don't want to force him to eat something else by starving him. Please help!
@kellysayegh First of all, a 1 and a half-foot long enclosure is WAY too small. A good way to find the appropriate size of the enclosure is to measure the length of the tortoise. Multiply by 10 to find the length of the enclosure, multiply by 5 to find the width, and multiply by 3 to find the height. For example, if your tortoise is 5in long, the length of the enclosure should be 50in, the width should be 25in, and the height should be 15. It is a very good idea to purchase a book or do research
@kellysayegh they don't do well with glass (some don't realize there's a wall and stresses them out) Should try putting him in a new home with walls that aren't transparent
This maybe is a stupid idea but, If i get a tortoise like yours can i have like my own grown plants inside the aquarium i mean some plants flowers that the turtle can eat by it own or does it hurt him? i have no idea it would be great if some one knew! Sorry for bad english!
What was the flower? A dandelion? I would love to train my turtle to eat from the wild..and then set him free in the woods close to a pond...but I know he is 6 years old..but it is a shame that he could out live me and then when I die..who is going to take care of him..
Haha I love russian tortoises they look like grumpy old men that are squinting at you. Like if they could talk they would be yelling at you to get off their lawn.
can tell me wh my two tortoises keep fighting i mean they're male and female for some reason they stay away from each other it's like they divided the whole tankthe male NEVER crosses over to the right and the female NEVER crosses to the left. PLEASE HELP!!!
@232drago You have to understand that tortoise are not very social animals. Unless they are going to mate, two tortoises don't have much business being around each other. In addition, they can be very territorial, and they know that his/her counterpart might start attacking because of this motive. I think your two tortoises are being cautious.
@hakugan Yeah your right, some reptiles like tortoises and chameleons for example like to do a hit it and quit it deal where they mate and part ways just to keep the species going then never see each other again. I was going to buy another chameleon but I have to buy it from another breeder far away, so I decided to purchase a tortoise when I get paid. Which one is a better pet a sulcata or Russian tortoise? Either getting a tortoise or a snapping turtle or evil killer lizard. hahha.
@232drago i dont have a turtle but this is what i think keep them togethere everytime they go to there sids put the togethere agian and see if it works
how old isyour tortoise i have a russian turtle just got him 2day like 1 hour ago and he'slike 3 or 4 and vets made it so he cn live for over 100 years so it'll be there when im gone!
could i have my Russian Tortoise live outside?.... i am in England....
i was given the tortoise recently and just found out its breed, aare there any things i need to make sure i have available to her? she is quite big about 5 inches or so (not sure how old) and could i use soil instead of hay? ty in advance
@gluesniff3 During the summer, sure they are OK being outside. The natural UV is much better than the UV from a lamp. Make sure they are safe from dogs, cats, crows, etc. The choice of their bedding (or substrate) would depend on the climate. If it is a little moist environment with chances of fungi growing, you would like to use something like coconut husks (they resist fungal growth). Soil would be ideal if it is in a dry environment. Good luck!
I want a tortoise but i dunno which species to get. I'm thinking Sulcata or Russian. Anyone got any advise? Size is not an issue i have 3 acres and a lot of clean grazing areas for a large tortoise. I'm looking for one with a lot of personality and so far the ones i've seen that i like are Sulcata, Russian and MAYBE a red foot but i doubt it. Money is no issue, Give me your opinion!!
jwalkinstick > You are very fortunate to have such a nice environment! If I were you, I would go for the Sulcata. Not just because of the personality issue (since it really depends a lot on the individual tortoise and how it is raised) but because of the potential predators they might encounter in the open area. For example, crows can be a lethal predator for a small tortoise like Russian, Greek, or Helmann's.
@jwalkinstick hey i recomend a russian tortoise there full of personality and i really love mine and i have never one regreted getting the russian species plus evan thow money isant an issue russians are one of the least expensive and there just GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i havee a different specie of turtles (with 2 red stripes on theyre neck ) for 1 mounth and it's eating from my hand (it eats only some kind of bugs ) she's name is jeepy :))
i have had my tortoise for about 2 months. i feed him by hand if he doesn't seem to be eating . but most of the time there is a few scraps just after 10 min
@ the pearl person you are very correct in your statement I only hand fed mine cuz they wouldn't eat when I first got them but ever since I jus put it in there dish for them to eat as they want. So don't be so hard on pearl!
@pearlbanger1995 Why the tortoise isn't gonna hurt its your hand gonna hurt and its good because you risk your hand for the tortoise and that means you love him/her
you should NEVER hand feed your tortoise. they arent supposed to be hand fed like that. it just messes them up. they are supposed to be fed like wild animals. you lay the food down & they eat it on their own.
That's ridiculous info. This is a pet, not a wild tortoise. And as long as it eats well, it doesn't matter if it comes from the ground, someone's hand, or the sky!
did i say anything about the fucking sky? fucker tortoises are meant to live like wild animals, which means that they will go & find the food, wherever you put it. so stfu
@pearlbanger1995 I sort of see what your saying... but how does it screw them up if they don't know any different? if they were born and did this from the first day what harm can it do?
And complete thumbs up to 11wormbig, as long as it eats well, exercises, then why does it matter? Pets are different from Wild animals, its just like saying "Its awful that we give cats cat food"
Sorry, your statement still sounds retarded. So, if I owned a cat, I should place cat food around my house -- behind the tv, under the stuff, etc instead of placing it in a bowl for the cat with the purpose that the cat can 'forage' for its food like in the wild? And what does stfu mean.
no. youre an idiot. i meant its not good to hand feed them, because later it will feel unnatural for them to eat it off the floor. do your fucking research, dumbass....
clarify that. im pretty sure you cant cuz youre fucking stupid. last night i ate your moms pussy. i still have that horrible taste in my mouth. tell that bitch to take a shower ever now & then
you live in america, but you mom came to me. i dont know what state, but damn i payed her a lot of money & that bitch couldnt even fucking take a shower
Lovely tort, and I love it shell growth. I cant immediately see any problems with pyramiding or anything, and it seems to be happy and growing quite well. Love it. : )
The only thing Im not sure of is the bars. If it can sometime reach them and push with both front paws into the bars, and catches its claws, it may possibly hurt itself?
Dunno, I personally dont use cages with this species. A drawer case tipped on its side is good enough mostly. : ) Anyway, nice tort!
@ecbfilms001 Some languages don't differ between the two, and that might cause a bit of confusion for people who don't speak English as their native language.
i love my russian tortoise :) her name is smoothie hence the name of the channel, smoothieFTW. i put heaps of videos of her on here. check em out if you want.
most turtles cost very litle if they are 0-3 years cheaps as £90 to £150 i suggest getting them online from a respectable website. im getting mine by christmas, a hoarsfield tort and 36 inch tank vevarium or somthing. :) all for like 300 which encludes every thing i need
@hakugan can you tell me the difference between a tortoise and a turtle? in french, we have only one word to name them: Tortue... so... what's the difference?
@Deathscythetransform In one definition, it is; Tortoise = Land turtle, Terrapin = turtle in swamp-like water, Turtle = all the rest. But this is an arbitrary classification, especially when it comes to box turtle/tortoise. BTW, just like in French, there is only one word for tortoise/turtle/terrapin in Japanese.
@hakugan same in sweden too, we just say sköldpadda (turtle) for everything. We might say vatten (water) sköldpadda for sea turtles, but yea, thats pretty much it. =P
@Deathscythetransform the diffrences is that tortoises usualy have a round sheil turtle have sometimes a spike type on its sheil like a connected mountain in a row
Are they as easy to take care of as leopard geckos? I have Two leopard geckos. If i got a RT i would probably put him in a big 40 gallon tub like from target or walmart.
I have a Russian tortoise! Those buggers are tough, mine got out of the back yard, and a hurricane hit once. We were so worried, but the neighbors found him a week later. He's fine now. But he's tough
Cuteee. :) I have a two Russian torotoises as you can see one of them on my vid.She trys to eat everything like the ground,my shoes, and much more. :) lol..your tortoise is awesome.
yours eats really well mine isn't as enthusiastic about it hes picky and eats mainly romaine and the occacional apple bit or dandelion...How do you get it to eat with so much energy!?!
hmmm usually hermanns/russians/ and tortoises like that LOVE FOOD no matter what it is thats very odd ...Dandelion greens Romaines are good DONT FEED YOUR TORTOISE APPLES EVERY DAY the natural sugars cause parasites and shit so be careful of apples not too much
@Demrush my turtle was shy when I first got him, when you have them more and more, that shyness will go away, just give them some time. (mine took about two months to loss the shyness.

@232drago You have to understand that tortoise are not very social animals. Unless they are going to mate, two tortoises don't have much business being around each other. In addition, they can be very territorial, and they know that his/her counterpart might start attacking because of this motive. I think your two tortoises are being cautious.

: ) Anyway, nice tort!

don't you hate people who think tortoises are turtles?
ecbfilms001 2 years ago 11
@ecbfilms001 All tortoises are turtles, but not all turtles are tortoises. Tortoises are land turtles. Do your homework.
AngryAlbel 1 year ago
ya thats wat the vet told me when i took in mt tort when i first got her
Clutso270 1 year ago
@ecbfilms001 Some languages don't differ between the two, and that might cause a bit of confusion for people who don't speak English as their native language.

I just got a greek tortoise...Kamy was born June 19 09.
I have lots of video of her eating, chilling...really adorable and I can pet her.
I have a red ear which does like me only when I feed her...otherwise, she hisses at me...
I have other animals as well, which love me very much (chinchilla, cat, guinea pig and lizzard) you can go and see them all in my videos! :)

nay535 1 year ago
@hakugan can you tell me the difference between a tortoise and a turtle? in french, we have only one word to name them: Tortue... so... what's the difference?
Deathscythetransform 1 year ago
@Deathscythetransform In one definition, it is; Tortoise = Land turtle, Terrapin = turtle in swamp-like water, Turtle = all the rest. But this is an arbitrary classification, especially when it comes to box turtle/tortoise. BTW, just like in French, there is only one word for tortoise/turtle/terrapin in Japanese.
hakugan 1 year ago
@hakugan same in sweden too, we just say sköldpadda (turtle) for everything. We might say vatten (water) sköldpadda for sea turtles, but yea, thats pretty much it. =P
hajkie 1 year ago
@hakugan =) Same in Chinese xD Lol, your tortoise is sooo cute and adorable xD
playmelikeamelody 1 year ago
@Deathscythetransform the diffrences is that tortoises usualy have a round sheil turtle have sometimes a spike type on its sheil like a connected mountain in a row

Are they as easy to take care of as leopard geckos? I have Two leopard geckos. If i got a RT i would probably put him in a big 40 gallon tub like from target or walmart.
