Hi Y'all! I was lucky, as a "damn Yankee!" in Austin to have played bass for Rusty in the mid-80s before I re-joined the USAF as an officer. Will Indian et. al. are to blame!!. Rusty taught me how to lead a band. I used that knowledge in Cheyenne with Pat, Chris, Mark J., Monty, and Tex to make "Mister Coffee and the Grounds for Divorce." I'll not soon forget playing with Rusty and meeting ALL of his dear friends. There will NEVER be another like him.
I will always cherish my memories of Rusty and thank goodness his music will live on ! Great entertainer, great singer and song writer, great person all around. I had the pleasure of seeing him perform several times in Dallas, Austin and even went to Port Aransas to see him :-) ~~~ Love my Rusty
A concert I "kinda" remember in the mid-70"s......... Along with David Allen Cole.Jimmy buffet, and many more. ,,,3 day concert in..., LOL, Atoka,OK, Was a fine mix of artist's!
@inatizzy2 we were there too!..It was a while back..Hot ..dusty...time..but the music was good..once you were there....there was no way out..people left there cars in the road...we made the best of it...I remember several naked people...sun burned terribly..sure glad that was not me..Enjoyed Willy Nelson..and No..I was not one of the women up front flashing him boob shots..I was up front and he looked at me and smiled..I shook my head and grinned..we both shared a moment rolling our eyes..fun.
@TheBec56 I remember it rained one of the nights. We had a little tent but U know how tents go.... still got wet but still had a great time. Glad someone else remembers that. Yeah, once there, U were there to stay. No getting out. There were naked people I know. No, wasnt me....... LOL
Wow - great to find this! Thanks> I lived in Texas 1974 - 1976 and Rusty was one of the great ones along with Michael Martin Murphy, Willis Allan Ramsey, etc.
Had the opportunity to meet Rusty in Waxahachie Texas at the Texas Theatre. A friend of mine had opened for him and I was amazed at this man's wonderful music... RIP Rusty... we're gonna miss you.
Gino's is gone but Rusty is still here. Gino's has been replaced by a new joint called South by South First. Rusty could never be replaced. Best wishes to both of y'all. I read he knocked 'em dead last night at the Saxon.
I miss seeing Rusty on Wednesday nights at Gino's at Stassney & South First in Austin! Had the pleasure of getting his autograph on my 1975 'Don't it Make You Wanna Dance' album in 2001. He said he did that in his 'B.G.' days (before gray). Nice guy!
Last I heard Gino's was still there. Moved from Austin in 2005. Live in LA now. But miss being able to go to a local place and see GREAT talent and have a good time. Made me wanna dance!
god bless rusty. many good times at saxon pub in austin and elsewhere. agua dulce still my favorite. woke up in roadside park myself wondering where i was. stay hard rusty!
