Yeah Briers does have good timing for comedy. I never knew about this one. Only The Good Life and also whats the one where he plays a vicar? Anyone know?
@ScottfromTexas 'Keep your pecker up' is a very old saying, I think it has more to do with chickens and your chin or beak than the American term 'pecker', the Beeb wasn't that bawdy even in the eighties!
I`ve got the entire DVD series and find the cast very talented indeed and think Richard Briers was outstanding in this part. Very entertaining programme. Plus I thought "Paul" was very sexy!
Does anyone notice when Martin runs up the stairs, Ann says "13 stairs we've got". Well, count them as he runs up, and tell me how many YOU count, I make it 12.
I wonder if Briers put something in his mouth to talk like this - seems less natural than in the Good Life. Seems a tiresome charade to keep up with or without a prosthetic.
Thanks for uploading these. Very quaint so far. I got in to a "Good Life" watching marathon here at youtube and some commenters suggested this series so I'm checking it out. Doesn't have the appeal as Good Life because I grew up wathing that on PBS here in the states but looks like a pretty good show so far.
Wow, you don't get shows like this on Brit TV now. I remember seeing this as Boy and probably caught the jokes. But as an adult now I can really appreciate how clever it was, going into the various characterr types in everyday day life. Whatever happened to our TV viewing, aye?
@Newworldman66 I agree to a point. I just think you have to wait for good comedy to appear. With new Labour there has been a moratorium on good cutting satire like Not the Nine O'Clock News, or Saturday Night Live. You can debate whether Ali G or The Inbetweeners is good comedy, but perhaps it's a generational thing.
@toast111 cheers for the that info, sorry for delay in response. Got a copy of Preludes & Fugues Op 87, by mistake. Preludes Op. 34, no. 15 the chap! Op 87 still a bloody good listen!
Interesting thought. I love Michael Palin but I don't think he could have injected the right level of sadness into Martin. (Martin is one of the saddest of all sitcom characters.)
LOL! Yep. The Brits have a certain savvy about this diametric - I've seen it portrayed in the OTT character [Lord|Captain] Flashheart as a foil to Blackadder. Fantastic stuff on so many levels.
Ann is hot Martin is a lucky old man to be married to her.

One of my all time favorite comedies. The local PBS station ran it years ago but I had never forgotten it.

@MerseysideAlice Paul reminds me of a British Kevin Spacey...both in looks as well as mannerisms.

Thank you so very much for posting this series! :)
Cheers!

Penelope Wilton must be a chain-smoker. She looks about 100 years old now.

Brythonn.
Quite right, the BBC is now totally devoid of one ounce of originality, imagination and talent.
Every thing is pathetically childish and aimed at the lowest Blair/Brown educated moron.

What about My Family.....Oops my mistake!

@bbcisrubbish You're right. Seems like television is continually dumbing down. Something like EDC would never be commissioned nowadays.

Loved this show! I heard the theme tune was by Shostakovich. Can anyone confirm this?
massivegayshite 2 years ago
Yes - it's his 15th prelude. Check out the 24 preludes by Shostakovich - they are all really short and snappy and some are quite amazing.

I would like to say I was a Paul, but I am one of life's Martin's.

nothing wrong with being a martin, you have to love him!!

My brother is called Martin, but he is not like this one! Btw I wondered if Michael Palin could have played Martin?

I thought of Michael Palin because Martin reminds me of Palin's character of Dennis in the film Jabberwocky
numpty1972 2 years ago
Yeah, he is a bit like Dennis. But Dennis is less obsessive and more of an idiot.
lexo30 2 years ago
i read that his behaviour is slight autism

I would like to see Martin versus "Monk"(the detective) =)
numpty1972 2 years ago
I think he's supposed to be just a bit obsessive.
