Very important video for my friends in Brazil to understand. They live in the mountains at an altitude of about 3000 feet, and their seasons are the opposite of here. It gets down to 60 F at night now, but it will get down to 30 soon. They bought a 4 meter by 8 meter polyester tarp($400!!!!!) and have made a shelter with it now. Some NGOs(non-government organizations) are now offering some food aid to the church where they also stay, but it is not nearly enough. The church is not heated.
Now will the leaves work better if you crush them up into smaller pieces, say the size of down? I'm thinking it might make smaller pockets of air that would be heated more quickly...But its just an Idea off the top of my head...Great video tho brother!
I don't know the answer to that... It may work.. but it will also compress the leaves.. making them lose some of the insulation under the weight. Try it both ways and let us know Bro! Thanks for the comment!
remember having small children hide in a black plastic bag and leaves would be hard for rescue personnel to spot them in a search so maybe having the kids leave something up above them on a stick or tree to mark them easier so we could find them if need be.
Wet leaves will work as well.. Anyting that will add an insulative layer to your body. You do need to be careful that you don't get your clothing soaked.. as this could abet hypothermia setting in.
As for wet weather videos.. we have some that we have done in the Missouri "rainforest" season... LOL! For example look at Handdrill success.. Thanks for your support!
dry leaves and straws are infested with mite up to various degree (those fellas feed on them), so expect some itching when stuffing them in your clothes.
I remember a newsitem about a 4yr old little girl that got lost in the Ardennes, Belgian woods, few winters ago. She was found after two days. Miraculously she didnt suffer any frostbite, doctors said the fact she had a thick knit cap and taht she huddled up under the roots of a fallen tree probably saved her life. Apparently a child loses up to 20% bodyheat via its head, so a good cap is very important.
Outstanding job girls, Illiana says hello and she can't wait to try his with me. She wants to know what you girls have in your kits? She says to tell you she has a kit too!!
You both are such loving and wonderful parents to teach your kids these survival skills. It seems like every year I hear on the news a story of a little child who has gotten lost in the woods, only to be found dead later. What a different outcome each of those stories would have had if they had only known these simple techniques. Awesome video! I'm going to share this video with my daughter, so she can teach her son.
Good stuff as always. To debug the various media's grass leaves or vines. If you can build a fire and just smoke the grass the little critter will no pun intended "Bug Out" and it will work for up to three days or longer if you stay dry.
Tam great tip on the bag I must remember to add more bags to my kit. Thanks
i really enjoy all of these cold weather themed video's, it's something that we can all learn from and use immediately. looking forward to seeing more winter themed stuff later in the season, great work.
Either 100 degrees out or 30, I ALWAYS pack a beanie, extra pair of socks, long johns and gloves. The extremities always lose the most heat. I tend to wear an A-shirt underneath as well. Glad you showed me the idea of leaves and a bag. Always carry a can liner as well.
I like the grass coat/mat. Wear it in the day and sleep on it at night. Good job girls you are good at sharing your knowledge like Mom and Dad. All good information
Hi milkman, actually once we get frost we don't see ticks until the next summer. We've been working in the woods for a month now not one of us, nor any of our pets have had a tick :)
I really dislike them, they find me before anyone lol
Another awesome video. I have never thought of using regular plastic bags from a store that way, and the girls gave another excellent lesson to teach the youngsters of the world! :)
nice hat tam .. ..funny thing is my nephew will lay down and cover leaves on himself and say "nie nie " good night ..just primitive institinct i guess...
Simple and effective, once again it shows nature provides everything you need, also I have to applaud you on teaching your little ones survival / bushcraft skills.
I used to deliver papers when I was about 15.. Many cold days my hands were kept warm by putting them in the middle of the stack of papers! Great tip Wider
I had a friend stay over one night after having a few drinks, i didnt have any blankets for him. I woke up up the next morning and found him totally covered by the weekend newspaper. It works
Prepared children are the future of this world. These skills are going to be asked of all of us at some point in coming century.
These children are going to be extremely well prepared.
A+ Father (and mother of course!)

Excellent vid! These survival/bushcraft skills should be teached to all kids at school, some kind of 'outdoors' class, afterall this can save lives.
