Well, at the beginning of WWI - Liége - the germans would still atack with tight formations against the forts. I don´t believe that these lesson was well learned at Sedan 1871.
Never the less ,I believe that that was learned when they were facing machine gun fire, and specially at 1917 offensive of "geogette" (don´t know the name in english): atack like the water looking for holes to passs trough, not like the hammer and anvil.
