Forgot to mention that after this song where Marks Tremolo fell off he really never cared to use them. I guess once it fell off he figured "Hey I like it better without it"
@liftedcj7on44s yeah he's not often using tremolo. once I saw in a video he teaches how to use extending the strings w/o a tremolo. he's a genius sometime I'm seeing him playing and I don't belive it. funny 'cos a few people can play the DS songs' lead gitar part perfectly but it's not the same.
@themindblowband If you watch the Eastbound train video at 3:43 i believe you can see his tremolo arm fall off. As we can see he was unsuccessful at putting it back on at the beginning of this video. Did I ever mention that I think the last solo he did in this version is the best last solo he's ever done? True to the original with a little something added in and it sounds so good!
I always thought it was because David messed up the first version at some point. In the same concert you can hear Mark get a little short with him at the beginning of Wild West End where Mark seems to get annoyed and say "That'll do Dave, yeah that'll do."
Mark wasn't going to let a sub par live performance of Sultans be seen by an entire country in 1979. When Dire Straits or Mark Knopflers name is mentioned a hundred years from now, it's inevitable that Sultans of Swing will be mentioned as well. It's his legacy and even as early as 1979 he knew it. So he and the band came back for this 2nd version and simply nailed it with a spot on perfect performance of the iconic song.
If you see the first version, when the first solo starts, mark starts it like if it were the 2nd one. I think that was the mistake why they played again.
Mark at his fluid best! It was my "61" Fender Stratocaster that I sold it to him in 78, (best 350.00 quid he ever spent!)It was originally black (I had it resprayed by Derek the "Burns" guitar polyester finisher from Hackney) the neck is also "61" but had a maple fingerboard fitted so that it looked like an earlier 50s model, Mark lost the volume knob if you look, also he sometimes put a bit of black plastic under the trem/bridge to stop it moving. Happy times! wheres the guitar now Mark!?
@ferraridinoman you dont happen to have anymore for sale do you, or some good fender pickups for my ARIA 003 series, as the Aria sounds crap and I need some fender pickups for it, as I am sure it will sound like a strat with wright pickups in, as the wood is identical.
ya in version1 he was in the wrong place on his solo (I thought the bass player goofed at first)..funny thing is that in version2,his tremolo fell off almost immediately..lol..I like Dave's strumming,.when he says"He knows all the chords"..thats what I listen for anyway..cant' have a front man without a solid bottom.
This is why he is one of the greatest guitarists. Started Played the last solo instead of playing the first, and still managed to improvise and make it sound good.
anyone looking for some dire straits and mark knopfler material which is rare, there is a good DVD site, with some great rare stuff,
w w w . knopfler-dvds . c o m , well worth a look if you like the straits or the knopfler solo stuff. P.S, please DIre Straits to win the Brit Award!
Something I just noticed: Mark has the guitar strap attached not to the upper horn (as per usual) but rather down by the neck. That's kinda weird. I wonder how he ended up doing that.
Well, the straplock seems to be in the back, that is done many times to correct the balance of the guitar. Just a matter of taste and comfort, generally.
He seemed to use the maple necked strat more than the rosewood one in the early days ,i wonder why his signature model is the rosewood one this one seems more fitting.
I remember he said one time he actually always preferred the rosewood fingerboard, even though he usually ended up playing maple. Even his Schecters had maple fingerboards.
this is closer to the original version - without the sentimental sax and sapiness from the more recent versions i've seen... i.e. Alchemy tour, Eric Claption co-tour
I don't know why they played it again. In the Eastbound train video you can here him say like "We messed up Sultans and have to do it again". And here he say "Let's do this Sultans properly". What was wrong with the first version? Or did they just play this again as a nice ending?
I know why cause in the first version in the second solo he starts to play the last solo if you notice he shakes his head and has to make something up until it right point then gets back on track :) thats the reason cause when i was learning these solos i saw this version and was like wtf he screwed it up hahaha
yeahg i meant in the first version he screws up the first solo cause in the first version he starts to play the last solo when he is suppose to be playing the first solo so he had to improvise and fix it hahaha
@beseeingyou6 I think because of Knopflers vocal in the first version which was like careless, but it's only my opinion :) BTW is there any official DVD of this gig??
Great job of the camera man, he sure knows what is important

After listening to almost every single live and the album version of Sultans this is my Favorite.
The last Solo is better than all the others. I like the Alchemy version but it is not the same Sultans as the early stuff.
