For those wondering, the person introducing the group was Ron Nessen, a former NBC News correspondent who later became Press Secretary for Gerald Ford.
This was the show with the "I'm President Ford and you're not" opening, BY President Ford. early on Easter morning (VBSEG) FWIW Idopted 2 kittens the night of the Ford-Carter debate and one, a tuxedo named Ecstasy, lived 24 years. "Down the highway, down the track, down the road to ecstacy, I followed you beneath the stars, hounded by your memory and ALL your raging glory. Idiot wind..."
It's funny how so many people seem to think that line is some sort of declaration of an atheist or something...
not that i have a problem (or that there is a problem) with atheism or atheists, but that's just not what the line is about, and I'm not gonna lie, kinda gets under my skin... :(
I'm not hot on the opening lyric because to me it's blasphemy (I know, some think it's the highlight) but her cover of "Gloria" is incredible. If you cover a song you ought to aspire to completely reinvent it and she sure does.
She's saying my sins are my own. Jesus did not die for my sins, because I did not ask him to. I take responsibility for my own sins. All poetry has it's blasphemy moments.
@ccipollini1984 ...right, I understand what she's saying, but it completely refutes the major tenement of Christianity so I personally don't like that line at all. But once I get past it, I love the rest of what she does with the Them original. This is a complete reinvention of the song, I just cringe at the opening line and when she restates it at the end.
AWESOME! :) She is so inspiring. I am 16 and a girl and there are no young women in rock this cool, brave, and amazing anymore. thank you Patti. and thank you person who uploaded this, for sharing.
This is one of those amazing moments that not only does the lead singer anticipate the choral change, but the band also anticipates the lead's emphasis Odd and strange for a female.
A pity the second segment of The Patti Smith Group on "NBC's Saturday Night" (it hadn't been retitled to "SNL yet), in which the band performed The Who's "My Generation," isn't uploaded to You Tube.
Does anyone out there know if the unedited episodes of "NBC's Saturday Night " are available on DVD/home video?
this was the first patti video i ever saw, on youtube a few years ago. it was taken down a year or so ago :( i still search for it once in a while, so happy someone put it back up!

@KC0462 maybe, but Patti was/is enamored of Brian Jones. She has a short story about seeing him in concert and touching his foot.

Godz! I was 22 and right there in her heart and head - she was the best thing about RnR in the 70s.

That was a killer band, Lenny Kaye, amazing, and Jay Dee Daugherty never got the credit he deserved as a great rock drummer.

that was not what she meant at all, mate. She is saying take responsibility for your actions, rather then saying Jesus died for your sins.

Wave wasn't bad by any means, but the writing was on the wall.
Easter was the last, great Patti album.
In my humble opinion, of course.

I remember watching this on SNL back in 1976.
I loved the first three Patti Smith albums.
Such passion and energy.
None of my hard rock friends ever really "got" her.
Too bad - their loss.
