thanks for the question i started of doing water color and as you know with water color you have to go light to dark so i just carried that process over to pastel.
plus it helps not to put to much dark down first because it can bleed or mix into your lighter areas but there are times when i put light over dark ..like highlights in hair
Wow! You did very good on that portrait Sir! I'm just beginning to learn doing pastel portrait right now. All I do is just charcoal portraits, but now I'm taking it to another level (pastel).
I've been having a bash at the pastels I'm having trouble with detail though. I've noticed a flat on the tip of the paste helps a bit other wise I've found doing it really big is a solution. Have you got tips you'd like to share with a beginner?
Same thing here! I really never took lessons, its just practice, and desire to do it, and also tips and things i picked up along the way, now i do it where i live. It takes time.... The only thing is, that no one will sit for more than 25 min... I get them done about that time give or take 10 min, but usually its about 25 to 30 min. I also have to do caricatures, and some wood sculpting to accomodate... I wish the bucks where better though.
if someone does want to sit awhile thats time and cost more ... but then you have people who don't want to spend more than 25.00 for a detailed portrait lol .
Hi kevin ,i really love art like you .i am very very young and i think your protrait is amazing and i can see you use lot of tone and i am sure you 're a pro.when i grow up i must buy your protrait! =0=you 're just great
it"s soft pastel i use pretty much what ever i can get my hands on colors like black, variations of browns cream, and pinks, and blue and red i buy individual sticks because i use those colors the most i use the same colors on black or white people just different degrees
Hey be cool thanks for your viewing my video hope your day is going well,
I wish the quality was better on this video but hopefully better next time.
I think I know the pastel set you bought it will probably be best to get a set that has at least 12 or more pastel. then what i do is buy individual pastel sticks as I need them in the colors I use the most like browns ,white cream and pink I use the same colors on black or white people just different degrees ( see next post)
pastel needs to be on a surface that will hold the pastel to layer colors i use mostly velour because it has a vibrant look.
in nthe video i'm using pastel board which has a sanded surface which eats a lot of pastel but pastel work very well on it. most people use canton paper which has a slight tooth on one side and smooth on the other.
as far as pencils i use them to do detail with eyes ,mouth and so on because pastel sticks are to thick.
i buy the pencils in colors, again that i use the most different browns ,white, black and so fourth. remember our skin is no one color of brown or pink but many under lying colors.
as far as pricing pencils and sticks are under 4.00 individually i don't know wrer you live i live in nashville tenn. i go to jerry's artaramma.
on line i go to mister art or dakota art i hope i helped
i just bought pastels today. the ones i bought were only 5$ and they were like peices of chalk. not like pencils. i suck with the ones i got. perhaps if i got some pencil pastels. im good wit charcoal and pencil. i can draw lifelike portraits. does the paper you draw on make a diffrence with pastels. i just used regular paper. i really want to be able to do lifelike portraits with pastels. any advice would be helpful. how much did your pencils cost.
on this one i did not i was actually to lazy to because of trying to film it and all.
but mostly when I'm in a dark area and it starts to get over in to a light area i don;t necessarily want it to go I'll use the spray to hold that area
Thanks for sharing this, very interesting to see how you developed it. Are you applying fixative on the successive layers all the way through? You have smudged in so many layers to get the skin tone - I'm intrigued! I will be doing more pastels soon I hope.
the outline was with a pastel pencil brown i think

why did you start with a light base? All other artists seems to start with a mid then go dark, then light. Different style?
Are you using Pastelmat?

What kind of pastel do u use? Oil, chalk or soft? because your pastel seems to blend so easily and im thinking it is chalk.

depending on there skin complexion
as our skin is no one color.
as far as paper it makes a HUGE difference
