I never knew soca could have such a fierce, sharp signature sound until I heard a clip from this song when I was in a taxi one night.........................the very next week I had a Maestro CD in my hands!!! Soca will go places, but we need to do the damn thing right!! Take a page from the founding fathers like this brother here. Concentrate on quality and longevity and forget the Soca Monarch.
It was a sad sad day in T & T when he died, suddenly. He indeed left a void that hasn't been filled nor has there been anyone of his caliber vision & talent. Thanks for posting this,as I was thinking of this song just yesterday.
WE need more of this, less of that tone deaf tuneless chutney that's being pushed by the Indians in Trinidad..just hope they dont bring this crap to Notting Hill carnival
actually I blame Ras Shorty for the crap way soca has evolved in Trinidad now..the heavy Indian influence has ruined the music and now the Trinidad sound is as confused and schizophrenic as the society. Out in the islands, the heatrbeat of music lives on. BTW how is it that hateful, tuneless chutney soca is only popular with Trinis..wel some Trinis, the Indian and White?
@nubianhorizons sometimes you lose focus when You talk crap..listen to indrani or ohm shanti ohm .by Shorty...that is like blaming Nat King Cole or Marvin Gave for the large amount or crap that passes of as RandB these days..YOU cannot blame Shorty..he gave us alternatives..we Choose to write and listen to craap..by the way are the inventors of automobile to be blamed for people who drive drunk or speed, and cause accidents and death??
@nubianhorizons You cannot blame Ras Shorty I for the foolishness of others. He repeatedly spoke and sang against the more vulgar soca artists. Also, you cannot say that hateful, tuneless chutney soca is only popular with Whites and Indian Trinis. Go to ANY fete and you can see how Black Trinis get on when those same songs are played. All are guilty.
True...i was just into secondary school in Grenada when Maestro released the album..every song carried a original sounding twist and like this one I just couldnt get it out of my head...even now when i talk to peoplw from all over the Caribbean they remember Maestro..even though he died more than 25 years ago.
Lots contend that Shorty invented soca, but this guy had he lived would have really intyernationalised the sound. His music was technically and in terms of modern ideas wdecades ahead of anything produced. Three tunes showed the future: Savage; Play Me and Bullpistle..but no one had the world vision ot talent to take up the baton when he died. A pity.
@nubianhorizons This guy is undoubtably the Godfather of "Pace pure Pace Calypso" even today in 2010 there's not anyone who can touch this genius. He still lives as long as his music is around for us to listen to and enjoy. What a pure, raw talent. What a a loss we incurred when he left us I was just a boy in primary school when he passed.
@nubianhorizons you know shorty dedicated a song to him. But you have to hear Shorty's greatest hits. Shorty was still the master. But, they wouldn't argue about it. Trininidad is great just for having artists who would evolve Soca from Calypso.
@nubianhorizons while i somewhat agree..the arrangment and music..including the soca style and speed was not and i repeat was not his idea..it was ED WATSON,,
Maestro is the principal architect of speed in the music....from "Brimstone", to "Tempo", to "Fiery", "Rampage", and "Savage", is pace like fire!! Too bad the modern speed merchants couldn't be bothered to mimic his flawless meter and sensible lyrics...
What we today refer to as "groovy soca" was also pioneered by Maestro - 34 years after he passed, his posthumous album "Anatomy of Soca" remains the ONLY soca album devoted ENTIRELY to "groovy soca"...
@MrTrinivoice Ed Watson and the Brass Circle as well as Charlies Roots with Pelham Goddard at the helm created a unique and superb instrumental style for soca - a style that our bards abandoned when the synthesizers and computers became en vogue....and then we wonder why no one on the international market will take us seriously....We NEED to go back to that Ed Watson / Charlies Roots sound!!
@3kneeboi well, i can certainly understand that, if that was the problem...he was always trying something new, and he was different to the "normal" calypso rhythyms....
@foreignmovies , yeah dats for sure. I havent heard this music for decades until I found it here on you tube, and I can tell you, since listening to it I cant get the melody out of my head.
WOW, I havent heard this since I was in secondary school back in the 70s. Maestro was the greatest. My brothers had a band back then and they used to play all his music. Listening to it today it still sounds as fresh as when it now came out. I stopped listening to local music when the jump up and wine brigade take over. This music should be taught in schools, this is what true Soca music should sound like. I can see my folks in my mind grooving to this sound at our house parties, wow.
just great lyrics flows with this man!if we stop support the crap most artiste sing today and only play the great songs of old maybe then maybe the new breed will start producing good material
@rmburgy I totally agree calypso is not what it used to be these artiste today cant rhyme they cant put words into the proper context I agree what they call soca today is pure crap all they do is make a bunch of noise with nothing artisitic about them , people like machel and bunji garlin pure garbage, they cant even extempo
this is one of my favourite maestro hits, love him bad, they should play a maestro song on radio every day, a retro carnival fete with this kind of music will be boss!!!!!1
yeh boy i remember dat. i remember sayin as a young kid. see?? dat is why yuh shudn help nobody! screwed me up. my fav calypsonian at the time alongside Lord Explainer and Shorty.
