I was 16 years old when I first heard this. And it still means a lot after all these years and will more relate as as scared child than will with the Brits ever coming back.
@EdgeCrush10 Just checked my cd and my old album (yes, album!), and no answer. Edge plays guitar and keyboard, so it makes sense that he plays other instruments. I'll have to google it.
I wish a live video concert footage of U2 playing "Tomorrow" could be discovered and posted here on Youtube.. it's such a powerful song, and I totally connect to it, as I, like Bono, lost my mother when I was a young fellow.
@viperdude281 Hey Viper.....i have checked it out....and i do not like it at all, and sadly....i think u2 are on a downward spiral as far as the newer things go (songs like North Star, Every Breaking wAVE, Glastonbury). For the record....I loved the last album tho :)
@gg41r You are right, but that is also one of the many beauties of U2. They are always trying new styles of music. Its what keeps them fresh, but yeah their recent music doesn't even compare with their music from the 80s and 90s.
@viperdude281 Well......I can honestly say....i like everything they hve done, certainly album wise from Boy until NLOTH. BUt....i really cant get into the songs that i mentioned before. HOWEVER, North Star and Every Breaking wave might have potentioal if done as full band songs. I really dont like this whole Bono and Edge acoustic thing at gigs. It was fine on Zoo Tv, it worked....now....every u2 acoustic song to me sounds bland.....and nowhere near as great as full band :)
@viperdude281 Haha....how things change....as suspected, having hear the full band do the songs like North Star and Everybreaking wave, i think they have a lot of potential :) Hell....im even digging Glastonbury

(4-27-83. auburn, ny).
Early, raw, unadorned, inspired, straight on rock! I've loved this band since day one and it's been a helluva ride to see how they've evolved. Those were the days indeed. I'll be seeing them tomorrow night in Chicago. People who bash Bono should get their head of their arse! What have any of you done to make this world a better place?
One of my all times favorites, roar, rare, and emotionally exposed. I agree; love to see/hear it live, though I believe Bono has left that place(tomorrow)
I'm agree. The best U2, in my opinion, are those of "Under a blood red sky", as the perfect synthesis on stage of the young angry from the first three album, and "Achtung baby" for his sense of decadence. After the '91 just few songs are savable.
i wish too this is one off my fav tracks by u2..my daughter started singing this when she was 4 ...not only is this great it is fantastic one off there best..''off there early stuff and speaking off bagpipes....yes it would be because i'm scottish...it would go down go down well.
So brilliantly Irish sounding, and that voice of Bono's...epic. I love that U2 became so huge - they definately desrve all the success, but it's almost a shame this rawness was (inevitably) lost.
Timeless. U2 at their finest, and most honest. Happy days indeed. October running into Tomorrow was about as natural as An Cat Dubh running into Into The Heart or the show ending 11 O'Clock Tick Tock / The Ocean.
What I'd give to see those songs returned to the set these days. Almost threw up sick, at their last Dublin shows, hearing the opening bars of Out Of Control, going ape to it, but hearing fcukwits around wondering was it a cover. The price of global success I suppose! ;-(
Couldn't agree more - track reminds me of the early 80's. Mike Sweeney plugging I Will Follow (as b-side to Gloria) on Piccadilly 261. Saw U2 with the Alarm at Manchester Apollo on Pre-War and War Tours in 82-83, looking back best gigs ever.
Understand why Joshua Tree became landmark album, but Boy & October remain favourites
But, without the change, some of us do not like, kids in 1990s would not know who they are, let along today. For the rest of us we have very early 1980s and four guys who got on stage fresh from high school and with some of the greatest lyrics ever and everlasting melodies...
I saw them play this on the war tour in march'83', edge played the tin whistle. they had stopped playing it live by the time they playe phoenix park august of the same year
Can anyone tell me from which timeperiod this is ?Is this from, let's say end '82 when they play this but also Two hearts beat as on wich, off course, by then was completely as it is of course from the"War"-album?
To be even more specific live versions like this featured tin whistle played by -believe or not- Edge. This guy ij just a genius. Supermultiinstrumentalist.
Tomorrow is a classic, and its sad U2 seemed to perform it live so rarely, Im not sure why. Anyway this is a good performance although a bit slow in tempo.
It's so good to revist this beautiful music. October got overshadowed by the later material, but this is exceptional stuff by anyone's standards. I'm looking forward to the remastered release of this album.
These are a couple of my favourite U2 songs off of my favourite album 'October', which is totally underrated. Most reviews I've read don't give it near enough credit, it's at least as good as 'War' or Boy'. Very beautiful songs, I'll be watching this a lot, thanks!
I fully agree. 'October' shows that you can put religious songs in the form of excellent rock music - all that without making it dull and full of christian bigotry. That's why i like 'october', 'fire' and 'with a shout'so much... unfortunately underestimated masterpieces. And a bit of regret that recent U2 has lost much of its early enthusiasm and that new songs do not convey that powerful religious meaning
True, I'm not a Christian zealot but you don't have to be to like their work. October and Pop are both very deep in their religious themes AND their humanity, which alas may have contributed somewhat to the lack of popularity with those 2 albums. 'Gloria' was wonderful and 'October' was deeply poetic. I didn't rate their last two albums as highly as those, although I half-liked them. Hopefully their next album will be more substantial!
Check out my playlists. I have a version that is a bootleg that sounds better than this version. Plus I have a lot of boots posted on my page. So if you are interested drop by.
Anyone know which show this is from? I know the title references 1982 but I sense it might be from European Leg 1 of the "War" tour 1983. At the end of the audio clip, Bono references "Two Hearts..." which wasn't played prior to 1983.
It had to have been in March of '83 or a couple of their late April shows of that same year, according to the Vertigo Tour website. Later on, New Year's Day always followed October. This is much better, though; I wish they had kept Tomorow in their set during the War Tour. It really would've sounded nice alongside Surrender and Sunday Bloody Sunday.
Yes I read alot about the early days, I mean this was probably war tour or maybe pre-war tour ´cause he talks about two hearts beat as one in the end.
Well heard that often , especially in the USA, U2 played in Clubs were they didn´t know who would come and probably often not in front of Fans, but people who just go to a Rock concert in their town´s pub
Yes, this has been one of my favorite u2 songs for as long as I can remember. I remember reading a book in the mid 80's explaining the song was about not wanting to go see his mother buried. She had also just lost her father a week or 2 before she died. The bag pipes on the studio version always puts my spirit in that eternal place... definitely one of U2's greatest songs.
Thanks so much for posting this...I thought I was the only one who appreciated these songs. They are brilliant...mystical...and I predict that U2 will one day do an album revisiting their Irish roots....jp
To me, it sounds like Edge is playing a pennywhistle, not a flute, to imitate the uillean pipes from the album track. He squeaks it a few times, but still not bad for a guitar player. :) His approach to the whistle part is a bit more choppy than I expected. The UPipes on the album are very legato, like an Irish Aire, as pipes almost always tend to be.
