Most of those Packard Merlin engines did not go to the U.K....They actually went to Canada ( for the most part ), for many reasons, not the least of which is that they were building planes here for the RAF long before the U.S. entered the war.
Canada entered the war on Sept.10,1939, and places like Halifax, Dorval, Goose Bay, etc., were crucial.

By the way the losses were 1087 aircrafts for the RAF, mostly fighters, and 1562 for the Luftwaffe, fighters and mostly bombers. Also total air losses for lufwaffe of ww2 is 27875...UK 22010 and USA about 45000...

When Hitler switched to bombing cities is when the RAF was able to give its pilots/planes a rest and repair its airfields. Anyone else notice that the bombers actually dropping the bombs are an early variant of the He-111 that wasn't actually used during the Battle of Britain, but was used extensively during the Spanish Civil War, especially on Guernica?
Also the commentator mentions dropping bombs on London. If so, it's an extremely Mediterranean London. It's my belief that this film used old film from the Spanish Civil War as all it's own propaganda footage of the real battle was shot out of the sky.

Don't forget the Americans also were part RAF Volunteer Group. The British originally came to ask if North American could build more P-40 Warhawks, but Dutch Kindleberger took the British wants and needs, and built them a fighter in 120 days. It was an American design with a great British engine and canopy.
RAF managed to get to Berlin and back quite regularly.During and after D-Day the allied airforces had complete air superiority,almost supremacy. The relative losses above Dunkirk were reasonably even-strange when you consider that British bombers were carrying out attacks on German troop formations without fighter cover.

The Corsair wasn't around in June 1940.Better comparison is with the Spitfire XIV-speed,climb rate,ceiling,turn.RAF 91 squadron shot down 184 V1 flying bombs. The problem with negative G performance in earlier models, was solved by Miss Tilly's Orifice and later by pressure carburettors.

True-everyone has their favourites.You'll never stop the Brits loving the Spitfire. It's still the most beautiful aircraft,and it's what it symbolised to us(and many others around the world)that led to it's place in our hearts.Having said that,it was a prewar design that kept it's edge throughout the entire war,not being surpassed until jet technology.The Me 109 in it's various models was a similar workhorse.

@wulff190 Piston and propeller driven aircraft yes, but I have to go with the ME-262 it had better armaments, better top speed with its two jumo Jet engines, and was capable of using the new air to air missle. there was also a section reserved for a radar system.
The only factor that prolonged the Battle of Britain was the absence of canons being installed on Hurricanes and Spitfires. With 50 or 20 cals., the battle would have been over much sooner.
A few others:radar ,interlinked air defence system,wise marshalling of resources by the RAF,willingness of young men to fly in combat with a few hours training,defending one's homeland against foreign aggression.
There's no doubt that axis were better than allied pilots in the early war. They had the flight time etc- but british and american pilots got very good near the end of the war. BTW germans out numbered the brits in alot of battles but you have to remember the war effort was extreamly weakend near the end of the war because hitler was a horrible tactician. If they would've had a different leader, they might have won because they were so far ahead technologically its not even funny.

Think about Luftwaffe pilots...there was the Channel between them and their bases...that influences the performance.
English pilots fighting in France before Dunkerque were owned. English pilots fighting there after the D-Day sustained considerable casualties.
It's not a matter of abilities when psychology gets into the general scheme of things...

RAF managed to get to Berlin and back quite regularly.During and after D-Day the allied airforces had complete air superiority,almost supremacy. The relative losses above Dunkirk were reasonably even-strange when you consider that British bombers were carrying out attacks on German troop formations without fighter cover.

The RAF Bomber Command prefferred night-time attacks with logical consequences: less losses and less damage. The German war machine was significantly reduced only thanks to the USAAF and its bomber squadrons of B-17s, B-24s, B-26s and many other aircraft.
Later in the war British attempts to execute bombing with the light of the Sun resulted in severe casualties. They stopped, leaving the job to the Americans. -.-

First of all the "Luftwaffe" was the airforce, not a plane.
IMO include the American P-51D and the Italian MC-205V Serie III and Reggiane Re-2005 to that list.

Ah, but the Spitfire was never pitted against American planes; specifically the F4U Corsair. Plus, remember the problems so many Spits had with the engine dying out in deep dives... I appreciate your respect for a very fine plane, but as far as propelled engine planes go, the Corsair humbled the Mitsubishi, and it would have done the same with the much respected Spit. I am just VERY glad the two never became enemies, and may the forces behind such old planes never be foes!! :-)

The Corsair wasn't around in June 1940.Better comparison is with the Spitfire XIV-speed,climb rate,ceiling,turn.RAF 91 squadron shot down 184 V1 flying bombs. The problem with negative G performance in earlier models, was solved by Miss Tilly's Orifice and later by pressure carburettors.

True-everyone has their favourites.You'll never stop the Brits loving the Spitfire. It's still the most beautiful aircraft,and it's what it symbolised to us(and many others around the world)that led to it's place in our hearts.Having said that,it was a prewar design that kept it's edge throughout the entire war,not being surpassed until jet technology.The Me 109 in it's various models was a similar workhorse.

@wulff190 Piston and propeller driven aircraft yes, but I have to go with the ME-262 it had better armaments, better top speed with its two jumo Jet engines, and was capable of using the new air to air missle. there was also a section reserved for a radar system.

The only factor that prolonged the Battle of Britain was the absence of canons being installed on Hurricanes and Spitfires. With 50 or 20 cals., the battle would have been over much sooner.

Kind of meh.
Many factors prolonged the BoB:
1) Lack of powerful turrets on German bombers;
2) Small fuel tanks on fighters;
3) Useless deployment of Bf-110s instead of other units;
4) Bad equipped and poor Italian force supporting the Germans;
5) Bad tactics that allowed the RAF to recover itself after a while;
And many a few others I don't remember atm.

There's no doubt that axis were better than allied pilots in the early war. They had the flight time etc- but british and american pilots got very good near the end of the war. BTW germans out numbered the brits in alot of battles but you have to remember the war effort was extreamly weakend near the end of the war because hitler was a horrible tactician. If they would've had a different leader, they might have won because they were so far ahead technologically its not even funny.
