most likely it is Tony Levin. He's been on every tour. I only wish I was old enough to see this myself. The Bottom Line is such a great little venue in NYC.
This is surreal - I saw Genesis at the Forum in LA perform this exactly one week later. It was my first concert and I'll never forget it. Trying to imagine how cool it would have been to hear this the week prior. :-)
I'm still kicking myself for missing this show back in the day, it's considered a legendary performance, esp. when joined onstage by R Fripp. Tony Levin has such a huge tone! PG definitely found his solo voice on the second record. And for what it's worth, someone posted earlier that Phil Collins was just an average drummer. His chops are excellent, but more to the point he came up with incredibly inventive parts when he was with Genesis during the PG years.
Genesis Six Hours Live 1972-1980 2DVD set, Genesis, The Lamb Live at the Shrine 3-disc 2CD/DVD set, Genesis Live in Montreal 1974 2CD set, Genesis Live in Zurich 1977 2CD set available at Tommygun Video - link to order and more details available on our channel (this one)
I had this (still do) this King Bisquit recording from 78. I saw this tour in Royal Oak, MI., my old stomping grounds. King Bisquit recordings were always the best. Genesis's recording in 77 sounded stronger than Seconds Out, I think.
If you want to hear the best of early Peter Gabriel then listen to the Battle of Epping Forest and the Musical Box....two songs that were way ahead of their time and better than just about anything out there now....Peter Gabriel/Genesis at their best !!!!
@Cuttingtorch - You're right! Peter's 1st album did come out in 1977, but he actually left the band in 1975. It takes about 60 seconds of Internet sleuthing to determine that this was in fact Peter Gabriel's show; introducing material from his 2nd album.
@moirana I love it as well. You should also check out the "Solsbury Hill" from this same show. It's the best version out there. Enjoy and have a great day, wonderful Norwegian person.
A pale and unemotional render of Peter Gabriel's voice and performance. Phil Collins may be an talented drummer, he doesn't measure up to PG's singing. What I am listening to here is NOT Peter Gabriel , but Phil Collins...the absence of video proves it too !...Peter's voice is so unique that it is plain to hear he isn't singing here, but Phil is!...
@KarmaSong Sorry.... I have to disagree. This is DEFINATLY Peter Gabriel. Phill whines and he can't do all of these sounds like when PG sings laaaaaaaamb. Peter all the way.
Does whiterobin's comment (below) intimate that Bill Bruford is on drums? This really would have been a preview to 1980s KC with PG on vocals! And you gotta love Levin on the stick!
Don't know a thing about growing up in New York, don't care about line ups and wasn´t even existing outside mum's stomach when this happened... but nevertheless I love this. Was just listening to Camel and for some reason wanted to hear this. And I'm happy I did. It's rocking now in the background for the seventh time. Nice live version! :)
Thanks for this one! The greatest show of all was "The Lamb" it changed of the lives of us who seen it. You felt you weren't alone anymore, that it all could be real.. all you were feeling. Growning up in NYC in the 1970s wasn't easy.. And Peter nailed it down. He's one of the greatest artist in music and art history ever. He always creates magic and awakens feeling you never knew before. Its hard it explain but there's many that know just what I'm talking about. Thanks Peter.
I saw this Tour, GVSC Dome(now gone)Allendale MI, Pete jumping off a amp or piano bench at the beginning of Back in NYC hit his head on those weird old factory lights suspended by a cable. I wish I saw the Lamb tour, my older brother did and raved about it forever...
The piano intro is insanely fast - and the way Pete is deliberately "punking" it up seems to almost take the piss out of his own song. Perhaps he was trying to create some distance between himself and his past in Genesis?
This is my absolute favourite version of this song. I just watched a video where Collins sang this song, and that just didn't do it for me. Didn't move me at all. But this one here is so much more raw and wild and has so much more energy. Plus I just Love Peter's voice but I don't like Phil's.
I think Phil shined on some songs he sang originally, such as Abacab and Turn It On Again. But yah Peter Gabriel is the only man to sing Peter Gabriel song imho.
@whalestail1955 So you are saying that Mr. Phil Collins is a musical genius? LOL' He is a average drummer at best. Mr. Whale you need to take a step back from the "80's and give yourself an honest listen to the talents of P. Gabriel vs. P. Collins (I am laughing as I type this) Be honest with yourself, and don't let MTV cloud your thinking. You might be surprised at the outcome.
@burlpark333 Peter Gabriel is worlds ahead of Phil Collins in his song writing and singing abilities....but don't get me wrong...Phil Collins is also very good...
I've posted White Shadow from this same concert. Also a rare unreleased song called Why Don't We from the 1977 tour. Click on my name to see my videos.
I bought this bootleg disc about 12 years ago in NYC - This version you have here is so much better than the CD I have. I'm sure Peter doesn't need to catch himself by not singing, "down-down-down" before "on Broadway"(Phil's version he does on Seconds Out), but for me that little bit has become obligatory
This is the true RAEL!This is much more what Gabriel had in mind about the energy and sound of the story! Also check out vBack in NYC from that tour- rocking as hell!
This was his tour in 1978. He rocked it out a bit. I saw this tour in Royal Oak, Michigan. His synth player was Larry "Synergy" Fast who was ahead of most or all people at that time as far as sounds.
Is this a remix it's played much faster then the original. Peter Gabriel left the band genesis in 1975. I don't understand it. It sounds realy difference than I know from Gabriel.

@lekoos I saw Levin play with King Crimson in the eighties. I'd go see him again in a hot minute. Very good bassist.

I wonder if Collins became such a douche because he was constantly compared to Gabriel.
BowedOak1 9 months ago
@BowedOak1 - a douche?? Can you give an example or do you just not like him as a singer?

@Chris51 No, his voice is fine, for an example of his douchiness, look up the way he told his wife he wanted a divorce. (Hint, via fax).

The Lamb how should be outside Genesis cage!!!
Finally P.G. can fly unconstrained and play his masterpiece as he would liked!!!
Outstanding!!!

Why can't Peter and Steve Hackett go on tour together? It will be a hell of a show! Genesis songs, solo stuff, it will be awesome! The lineup:
Peter Gabriel - vocals
Steve Hackett - guitar, effects, vocals
Tony Levin - bass, stick
Terry Bozzio - drums
Brian Eno - Keyborads and synthesizers
Just imagine a tour with this lineup! The other three guys of Genesis will be kicking themselves!
