cicero murphy never gave a shit about the world championship. As long as he could hustle, he was fine. I played him in Johnston City one year, in one pocket, and was lucky enough to beat him. A very good hustler, and a nice guy.
Cisero Murphy is a HoF. I met him a couple times when he used to work at Spar Billiards off 8th ave. I actually beat him in a game of 8Ball, course he preceded to trounce me. He was an old man by then but the nicest guy ya' ever meet. The owner told me that back in the late 50s he was one of the best. He won all the major tournaments except the World Title which he was kept from playing cuz he was Black.
All the best players boycotted a World Championship in the early 60s cuz they disagreed with the BCA not allowing Black players to qualify. In an interview, Cisero said that he had no animosities and no regrets about his career. A cat that owned a room bought Cisero's "Bushka." When he got it, it had black electric tape instead of linen.
OMG! One's gotta love YouTube and especially its contributors - I'd not believed I'd ever get to see this one. Thanks sooo much!
(Too one doesn't get to see Luther's first break shot - looks as if he didn't quite get there with the cue ball, no? And: the overhead mirror was such great spectator's asset, wasn't it?)
I saw Luther Lassiter play in person in Aberdeen, MD in April 1970. When playing the MD state champion, Wimpy ran over 100 balls. I got to talk with Wimpy for awhile and have a photo of him shooting with me in the background. He was a fantastic shotmaker. Unless you saw him in his prime, you will never know how great he was!
I hate just being in a suit, I cant imagine playing pool in one

I read somewhere that Murphy was the only player that Mosconi was wary of playing. Whether it was racist or professional respect I'm not sure.

Thanks. It's too bad about race. We were denied the great Satchel Paige in baseball because of that, and I'm sure many others in other fields.

That's good to know. Also how he played with such a slick grip Ill never know. I wonder if it aided his slip-stroke in some way.

Who's the commentators?
2:44 - "Oh, I wish I had billions of dollars, I'd buy everyone a color set, it's a great game in color."
"I'd buy them a billiard table too, Johnny."

One of the commentators was Chris Schenkel who did the Professional Bowlers Tour for a number of years. He passed away recently.
