Lots of people want Mac OS, but not pay more than 600$ for a laptop. OS X on the ION platform with an N330 should be a decent cheap solution. I think something like Apple certified MB's from ASUS would be great. I know several people that would be using Mac OS instead of Windows now, if this was reality.
One flaw with the certified hardware program is that OS X could only run on new hardware and not existing hardware and as you said in a previous video, OS X is getting crushed in the server market because people wont spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to replace their existing hardware. This would mean that OS X could only expand at the rate that people purchase new hardware and not at the rate of software.
as with most systems today going to 64 bit, that is a must. But what you are forgetting is the speed of expansion is at the rate of many OEMs and custom hardware vs just the one OEM that is Apple, thus at the speed of software as it is demanded which is inherently linked to application use. Enterprise is a very different market, you do not need HW verification in those markets just set it free for that demographic.
I need to know, . . do you think osx will go to pc platform this year? please tell me if you think so? I find your videos facinating and your so god damn clever man your my idol. thanks for a reply in advanced. I NEED TO KNOW!
i do not think it will go free this year. i think apple will be forced by law to do so. that is the way it is looking so likely in Europe first and then maybe the U.S., maybe but not likely this year.
Aaaah whats that high pitch chirping noise in the video? I hear this almost always on apple users videos. Is this the isight built into a notebook or computer or is it an external isight? It makes me insane.
Anyway aside from that, this is a very good video mrbit10. Good job
Good video, I wonder if Apple wants to be # 1 or if they are just happy controlling 6-8% of the pc market & making tons of money. If its the first I agree with you they should release osx to the OEM's & the rest of us that build pc's. If the latter Apple should not release osx because it would hurt there hardware sales & they would eventually become a software company, which is not bad, but they are currently geared to make money on hardware.
I think is starts in the beginning of Apple, Apple has always thought they had to make money of hardware sales & their business is based on making pretty computers with their os. Which is not bad if you can make money & your happy with being at the bottom 6-8% in the computer world, but will never be like Microsoft with their current mindset.
It's nice to see an argument or case for this topic mrbit without every other word being mother f***** or F**** this and f*** that. Thanks. I think it will happen maybe, trouble is Apple are doing very well at the moment, but the momentum will stop one day and the business model will change and I suspect many a "Mac Fan" will be chocking when OSX is let free.
Mrbit, you make some great points, but the bottom line is Apple has not done it because they know it will not be a benefit to them. You are very smart, but Apple has billions of dollars at their disposal, and have some of the smartest minds on the planet, and no doubt they have exhausted this scenario hundreds of times in hundreds of different ways, and they have come to the conclusion that its not worth doing. I don't see how you can argue that. Hit me back with some feedback.
C. It wont make them money without completely tarnishing their brand name due to incompatibilities, dodgy Dell support lines, cheap computers that break a lot etc. Which is how Microsoft is going, they have a terrible brand name at the moment, and it takes a lot of years, as Apple know, to turn that around to create a name that people respect.
What's Dell support line gotta do with Microsoft's reputation? And seeing as MS is one of the richest if not the richest company's in the entire world with a global market of what 90% then the money argument is bogus too. You can make more money on software then hardware, Apple has to pay Asus or whoever to build there computers after buying all the components, they pay a company to stamp a DVD and box it, which has higher profit margin.
You can make more money on hardware your quite right, however if Apple suddenly licenced out OS X to other OEMs, no one would buy them as the main reason people stick with windows is because of their comfort zone. That and the fact that they would likely be pushed to the back out of the way, because otherwise Microsoft could say to the other OEMs, okay instead of selling windows at $100 to you, we will sell it at $10. Suddenly Dells are $90 more expensive for no reason, and Dell die overnight.
Just as what as happened with Ubuntu on Dells. Dell have to keep it very sweet with Microsoft, otherwise one snap of Microsofts fingers, and Dell are dead.
I was stating hat more money is made on the software, there are very small profit margins in hardware as by nature it's expensive. But Software is different, once it's developed the manufacturing costs are peanuts. MS changes it's pricing all the time, every time Dell buy Windows in bulk it's more then likely at a different price, your talking the extreme. It's not up to MS what goes on a computer, it's up to the market, if OS appeared on a Dell it would be all over the news and an instant hit.
If Apple released a non EFI version of its OS, it would be the most pirated not the most bought OS in history. This is what I think. Having it EFI-locked saves me from calling up Mr. Raji Patel in India to unlock it. No offense, but I have a terrible time understanding them, and their attitude is always shitty.
Mostly I agree and yeah The mid 90's were apples worst days Not because Apple released it's OS free (like emeek said) But because their OS was trash. And If Apple's current OS is good, why would they release it? I mean apple is selling more and more macs every year and freeing their OS would lead them to a wider market share. And no this is not the same case as in the 90's because Apples current OS is Very good.
i learned alot last night on your ustream you have a talent for teaching... i just hope people dont go on your ustream to bash... everyone who doesnt agree with mrbit should visit his ustream.. trust me his you tube vids dont cover this subject like he does on ustream..this guy is a straight shooter and doesnt bash so more time is spent on learning together.. I agree with you. Even Steve Jobs said that Software is more important than the hardware. He said the reason that Ipod succeeded over other portable music players is because of the software that drives the devices. He said that other companies had nicer hardware but those devices were beaten by Ipod because Ipod had the better interface and software.
We can dance around this subject all day, but what comes down to it, people are scared of change. They compare previous experiences to justify that change as not a good idea. Mrbit, you have a tough road ahead in order to change people's views, good luck... and I'll see you on Ustream sometime.
"but what comes down to it, people are scared of change. "
Hardly. I don't want a repeat of ideas that have proven time and again to not work for the financial security of companies that make hardware and software.
"They compare previous experiences to justify that change as not a good idea."
I think that you guys are confusing what you want with what is good for Apple's financial future.
Hey, I want new PPC Macs, but I know I won't get PPC Macs.
hold up, no gadgets allowed in that. the context is only computers. Many analysts insist that Apple spends to much attention on its gadgets rather than the Mac. There were also times that Apple was floated by the gadgets.
that said, Mac went up 54% for this year compared to last year meaning if confirmed then the Mac revenue will account for about 45% of all Apple total rev. That means the gadgets still carry Apple. Sun is more of an open company BUT what I meant is their products are everywhere EVEN IN OS X as A MAJOR API and will have ZFS in Snowleapord.
YES as APPLE for a bottom line, the context is Computers. They are a great gadget company, I own two. But they were talking about the future of Macs vs Gadgets.
I do think opening OSX will be Apple's next move as it comes more popular. However, as Steve Jobs has said in D5 he has no aspiration for the Mac to be in 80% of the market share, but just happy that they made a profit.
I don't want Windows to just go away either, but inspire MS to make better software. They did a great job on Office, so it is possible.
Fact: We know what Apple's business model is. Fact: Apple's business model is a walled-garden. Fact: This walled-garden approach has helped Apple not only to survive but to the thrive. "Apple-certified computers manufactured by third parties is tautological, since NO ONE could do as a good a job as Apple."
Let's see some facts to back this up. How well do you know Apple's internal workings? Do you personally look at Apple's computer building process daily? Do you work for Apple?
Apple today is yesterdays IBM and that is a good thing because they have complete control over their products.
Operating systems? Sure, let's talk about OS X, which is what we are running today.
Some people spell it OSX without a space, but the space is needed (try it both ways using the text to speech in OS X) and hear for yourself how to spell).
Now, let's talk about stability - if the original IBM "PC" were not cloned, then the "PC" would have been stable.
Lots of people want Mac OS, but not pay more than 600$ for a laptop. OS X on the ION platform with an N330 should be a decent cheap solution. Apple's revenue is about twice that of SUN Microsystems.

True, Apple is a little smaller if you are just counting the number of employees, But Apple makes much more money than SUN does.
