This isn't really fair. The slayer version is really bad quality. It sounds a lot better on my itunes. I still think that the priest version is better, but I don't think this is an accurate representation of the slayer version.
@arvensus Of course not even as a bigger Slayer fan than a JP I think that the original is better, but Slayer did a good job on the cover and that's why you are dumb =)
Said it once, say it twice. Slayer converted it to some arrhythmic crime of a single tone, one single disgrace of scream. And that's all. No relation whatsoever to the heights of Priest, as we can hear later on this viseo.
You know guys, it is not only volume and power. You got to know to play and to sing!! God damn it, you gotta do more than just screaming like slaughtered chickens!!!
Didn't notice that Slayer had a style, but now that you say... Yes indeed, a very special style. Arhythmic drums, dozens of mistakes of the guitars, inability to catch more than three tones while singing, and all that together in a single package of disgrace. Oh but I forgot, it is artistic freedom! Everybody grabbs an instrument, cratches the strings, and ready is another masterpiece of diletantism. OK, why not?
Funny that Slayer is using a high guitar note in place of the high-sung notes "bawl" and "crawl." Guess it's all they could do since their singer aint no Halford!
im seeing priest in November going to kinda suck at the shaw conference center just i big cement block no acoustics what so ever :( tehy should be playing the event center!!!!!
@MrSkuldugery I will be at that show as well. Trust me, I have seen Priest over a dozen times, and the venue cannot contain them. The shaw will be no different
As far as I am concerned Slayer is so overrated it isn't even funny. I can barely get through a whole Slayer song never mind a complete album. I am not joking...they get way too much credit for being pioneers of metal.
As with all cover versions it depends which you hear first - the original or the cover, whichever one you do hear first is the one you usually prefer. Doesn't make either version any better or worse for me.
@BuggritHall I disagree I have heard covers first or vise versa and it didn't make any difference which one I listened to first I listen to the one that takes more skill and sounds the best. The technical skill Robs vocals completely destroys toms hands down. I respect that they are giving credit to one of their influences but it is obvious which is better. I don't mind the slayer cover but I mean come on it is painstakingly obvious.
@14SlayerFan88 You are right, Araya doesn't have Halford's range. When I heard Priest and Halford singing it, I thought of an army marching in unision, trampling under foot. I don't hear it hear. Slayer is a great band, but nothing beats the original.
I like older Slayer, and love the album, but the Slayer version is monotone and flat. You gotta be tone deaf to think it beats the original, and I WAY prefer Thrash to classic Metal.
Judas Priest owns this song. No band has come close. Heavier and more dynamic than Slayers for sure. hard to cover Judas Priest but I remember back in high school when that Slayer version came out. I loved it, still do, but Judas Priest did it perfectly.
@ShowNoMercy656 You wouldn't see the humor because you have a bug up your ass. It's just an opinion that he is the best singer. I can think of hundreds of other singers with better voices but that too is just an opinion. It's all a matter of taste and opinion so relax. I like Priest but they are far from the best. Eat shit.
@ShowNoMercy656 Obviously the problem is in your mind since I didn't say there was a problem with anything! I was making a joke. I knew there would be at least one idiot to comment seriously about a comment that wasn't serious. Did someone just get a lobotomy?
@ShowNoMercy656 If you had a cock rammed up your ass you'd scream like that too! Halford had a lot of practice. Fuck off all you hard-core Priest fans it's just a joke. I don't hate Priest it's just a joke so go easy.
I honestly think both are great creations. Instead of thinking that I need to draw battle lines between my favorite bands and defend one to the death, I actually appreciate both. Even though Slayer has to be my favorite band, I do agree Halford is BY FAR a much greater vocalist than Araya. I do, however, prefer Lombardo to Priest's drummer. Basically, hearing one after the other is perfect for me, because they're both perfect in their own ways.
Hey nay-sayers, Halfords' a proper geezer now but the mighty-metal-poofter can still hold his own with any of these youngsters...His fucking voice codified Metal...Osbourne, later cats to follow, B. Dickenson(followed his better Paul Di'Anno), Dio muddled through after Ozzy, all they can do is try too hard to achieve a gift only Lucifer himself can grant...a set of pipes from hell and a chorus of a few thousand demons to supercharge it!! Robs' the uber-metal grand-daddy of them all, hands down!
@CHOGGIE23 paul di anno blows-bruce made maiden---ask anyone who the singer of maiden is and they will say bruce gauranteed.and your right--dio "muddled thru,in a way;after ozzy B.S.changed musically-R.J.D. fit that sound------But Halford, after all of these years can still RIP THE SHIT OUT OF VOCALS!most singers from that era(and later) sing lower cause their voices are fucked(example-tom araya, love slayer but he cant hit the highs any longer.point is ROB HALFORD had and has a phenom.voice.METAL
@marmjr77 -Yer right, but Halford tends to peter out during a tour-Voice begins to falter after about 15 dates, then even he can' hit the notes he could a few weeks back-Seen Priest several times, better to catch Halford at the beginning of the tour, his pipes are not as fresh as they were 30 years ago...as far as the Dickenson vs. DiAnno thing, personal taste mate...I think Bruce blows compared to Paul-hated maiden after he joined and I was front row for # of the Beast tour, Blew, blew, blew.
@UjnaStara I already said i was joking.Obviously there can't be a comparison between these two.I know Tom's voice live isn't the ideal for the last few years. But Halford's isn't either to be fair.Of course you can't blame him, he's so old it's natural.
Slayer... well, they slaughtered it to pieces, din´t they? I could´t even count their mistakes. Completely incapable to hold even a simple rhythm, they devastated it. They really fucked it up, I mean completely and not only the "vocals" - if one can name that "vocals". Simply horrible what they did.
And so it turns even greater to hear it by Priest after that catastrophe by those amateuric wannabes of Slayer. Here we have some guys who know what they play, and they play it exacty!
@kickniko Ward you`re being a little hard on the Beaver. But of course no band could match JP`s original classic. Have you heard Judas priest (Halfords) Scorpions cover of Blackout its ok
Yeah, I guess I spoke too... absolutely. Still, to my ears it sounds like minced meat from Slayer. I know that I go far too far demanding exactness and not only power from bands. Well, call it my personal screw or something. (Everybody has some.)
Never heard of that cover of Halford, thanks a lot man! Just checked it out in youtube. Well... though I don't like the songs of Scorpions very much, I must say that it is very well played. Not just a foggy mixture of sounds.
No one can scream better than Rob Halford, the only singer who comes close is Bruce Dickenson, and that's only in his song Number of the Beast, and that wasn't even intentional, so he can't repeat it as well.
I like Slayer for having done the cover, or I would never have heard the original song. However its unfair to compare Tom and Rob. Rob has a voice that comes to its right in this song, and its been described as being so unique with its span over 4 somethings, such that only 4 people in the world can sing like him...and the 3 others are doing Opera!
The original is fantastic and I agree somehow more heavy than Slayer!..then again they tried to cool down the madness on the South record.
You have to listen to the previous song(Here Come The Tears) and then go into this classic to get the whole effect on Priest's Sin After Sin. KK Downing's solo is unmatchable!
@BellumSacrumBellum28 What the fuck? They're both great bands and Slayer respect Judas Priest as one of their best influences. Slayer has been around for many years and deserve as much credibility for Heavy Metal maddness as the other greats. They're Priest fans like you are, it'd be like them saying that to you if you covered a Priest song.
Judas Priest and Slayer should never play this song together on stage because that would be so Metal that the entire audience would be bronzed like baby shoes.

Judas Priest and Slayer should never play this song together on stage because that would be so Metal that the entire audience would be bronzed like baby shoes.

Priest's version is better, not because Slayer sucks or something, but simply because Judas Priest is the Heavy Metal band ever existed.

i love slayer, and the cover is wicked. but seriously....this is like the most metal song ever. Priest are the gods, lets not get it twisted.

wow tipton owns ok king kings solo was garbage just a bunch of noise
metalthrasher89 1 year ago
@metalthrasher89 ALL King's solos are garbage. It's a well known fact he sucks and Hanneman is the really genius behind the Slayer guitars.
