I don't quite understand the sentiment that offering to buy gold for less than its value is a scam. I honestly haven't bought/sold any gold before, but it would appear to me that when dealing with any sort of valuable, you've (usually) only got yourself to blame if you get a bad deal - no one's forcing your hand.
That being said, the companies which claim the 14k gold is actually lower seem...questionable to say the least.
What it's worth to him? That right there indicates you should never deal with him. Any company like this should use the market to determine it's prices, like the pawnshop (or whatever it was) presumably does.
I just got $360 for half a troy ounce, or 10 pennyweights worth of 14 carrot gold....so if 24 carrot gold is at around 1600 right now, 14/24 is 58% so .58 time 1600 is 928 per ounce of 14k gold divided in half means the actual market value of my gold was $464, and I got $360 which is reasonable. He took less than 25% as profit, which is pretty damn good.

I don't know what the problem with this company is. They make no claims to reimburse you for any particular amount of its value. The fact that you must make affirmative steps to have your items returned is problematic, but not too much, considering I'm sure you agree to it upfront in their terms.
