Not only are whitecoats not a part of the hunt for 20 years, but the population of seals has gone from about 1.5 million to almost 6 million in 20 years- even while the hunt has continued! There's no conservation problem. Over 90% of seals today are killed with rifles.
So could SOMEONE tell me why this hunt is any different from a typical managed deer cull or a beaver cull? (besides the hundreds of millions that animal rights extremists raise from showing you pictures of the animal dying?)

But sometimes natures carrying capacity is exceeded- as is the case with harp seals (most research points to 4 million being carrying capacity, the current population is up at 5.5 million).
Nature's way of balancing out the population involves starvation, disease and predation (by sharks). A hunter's rifle or club kills a seal in just seconds. Isn't it better that the animal dies quickly while local people are able to benefit from the animal resources (pelt, Omega-3 oil and meat)?

In the case of animals I also think it is more respectful to put their parts (Meat, Omega-3 oil, and pelts) to good use. Particularly if local people who have few economic options and who live off the land can use those parts to eat or to sell.

I know, It would be murder. I wouldn't condine "murder" but helping someone who is suffering so badly with no end in sight is humane. Perhaps just finding a way to let them sleep through the pain is the best solution...
But back to seals. We can't have hunters running around injecting them with sedatives. So how about killing them as fast as possible? That's what the rifle (used 95% of the time) and club (5%) are for. Both are considered humane by independent Veterinarians.
